This fonds is largely devoted to the minutes of the semi-annual and annual meetings of the St Hilda’s College Alumnae Association (SHCAA) and the finances of the association as well as minutes of its executive committee meetings. The reports in the minutes include details of the various social activities of the SHCAA and its relationships with other organizations (eg, Canadian Federation of University Women, Local Council of Women and several charitable groups). Finally the fonds has an eclectic mix of material relating to various activities of the SHCAA and to some graduates of the College.

Much of the early material suffered considerable water damage at some point in the past: some had to be discarded and other material was photocopied and then discarded. In consequence there are gaps in the early activities of the association. Later material arrived intermittently and there are no minutes for the years 1986/7-1995/6.

Fonds consists of records created and collected by John Beckwith during his career as a composer, writer, music critic, radio broadcaster, administrator, educator, and performer. Records include sketches, drafts, and manuscripts of his compositions and arrangements, as well as programs, posters, reviews, correspondence, recordings, and other materials from premieres and other performances of his works.

Fonds also includes records relating to Beckwith's work as a radio commentator and script writer for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC); music critic for the Toronto Star; professor and dean of the University of Toronto Faculty of Music; and writer of numerous lectures, articles, and books.

Records documenting the activites of Milton Brown as professor in the Department of Hygiene and Preventive Medicine and head (1956-1967) of the Department of Public Health. There are extensive files on administrative matters and courses; on courses given at the Canadian Civil Defence College; on research relating to tuberculosis, other communicable diseases, and the development of vaccines; and on committees, especially those that Brown chaired, such as the Panel on Infection and Immunity of the Defence Research Board and the Committee on Accident Prevention of the Canadian Public Health Association. Some of Dr. Brown's files incorporate material produced by Donald Fraser, and there are also some of the latter's files.

The Marjorie Lamb/ Alert Service fonds is primarily comprised of the research and publishing files of Marjorie Lamb in her capacity as a public speaker and the author of the Alert Service newsletter. The newsletter, which she published in the 1950s and 1960s sought to expose and counteract Communist activities in Canada. Her files extensively document the labour movement, Cold War political issues at the municipal, provincial and federal levels, and radical social movements in Toronto and across Canada. Implicit throughout the records are the issues of domestic espionage and propaganda.

Fonds consists of material documenting the careers of both Prof. Frederick Winter and Joan Winter, particularly related to their archaeological research. Material in the fonds represents both of their individual work and education, as well as research conducted and presentations given together. The records of Prof. Frederick Winter’s cover his publishing activity, research across Europe, particularly within Greece, teaching, and some aspects of his doctoral work.

Joan Winter’s records make up a larger portion of the fonds’ material with considerable documentation of her undergraduate education at the University of Alberta as well as her time at the University of Toronto. Records also include Joan Winter’s teaching material as well as the tutorials she led for some of Prof. Winter’s courses.

The Winters’ joint research is documented through travel diaries, articles, research, and presentation notes. Some of the presentations are accompanied by photographs and the fonds includes additional graphic material related to their research.
