This series contains material relating to Professor Spencer’s birth, childhood and later birthdays; childhood stories, plays, and poems; reunions and other post-graduate activities at McGill University and the University of Oxford; honours received; and files relating to the residences that he had owned. Also present are copies of his curriculum vitae, security documents regarding the Department of External Affairs, and material reflecting his long association with the Canadian military in the form of Remembrance Day ceremonies and VE-Day and other celebrations related to World War II.

Mrs.Scroggie (née McLeod) was herself a graduate of the class of 1924 and was involved in organizing various reunions. There is also some memorabilia such as "Admit to Lecture" cards from Scroggie's time as a student.

Front end page is inscribed "Frederick A. Urquhart July 14-33, 3rd Biology, 55 Hammersmith Ave, Toronto" in black ink. Book is in very poor condition - front cover has come unattached, binding fabric on spine torn, several pages loose or unbound, extensive discolouration to end papers. Some attempts have been made to repair the book with tape.

Series contains manuscripts and publications that McKay either wrote or kept in his files. Although the majority of pieces address scientific matters, the series also includes a Junior Prize Essay (“Fathers Versus Sons”) that McKay wrote while still in high school. A number of pieces, including the aforementioned “Fathers Versus Sons,” are to be found in journals or magazines, which have been included in the fonds both so as to preserve context and because many of them are no longer in print. It is worth noting that four of the articles in the series were coauthored, rather than sole-authored, by McKay. These are: “The Decay of Nitrogen Afterglow,”
“”The Decay of the Populations of Metastable Atoms and Ions from the Same D-C. Discharge in Neon,” “Effect of Previous History on Switching Rate in Ferrites,” and “The Hall Effect and Resistivity in Tellurium.” The series also includes McKay’s PhD dissertation, The Measurement of the Dialectric Constant of Electrolytes, and the high school physics textbook he co-authored with D.G. Ivey and which his sister, Marjorie, illustrated.

This series documents only one of Davidson Black’s publications, but more of his addresses, in particular some he delivered in 1925 before his discovery of Peking Man, and the Croonian Lecture in December 1932 that cemented the acceptance of his research.

This series documents Coxeter’s earliest writings and research while a student at Cambridge. It consists of research notes, a draft paper on Schlafli functions and the manuscript to his “old” thesis entitled Petri Polygons: a New Approach to the Study of Regular Polytopes and Skew Polyhedra. There also is a 1930 offprint from the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London and a manuscript of Part II of his post-doctoral thesis. Finally, although it predates his attendance at Cambridge in 1926, a 1924 mathematical notebook has been included in this series.

Records document Milton Israel’s graduate studies at University of Michigan, and his publishing, teaching and research activities as Professor of South Asian Studies in the Department of History at the University of Toronto. The records relating to his graduate studies consist of research notes and some footnote drafts for his doctoral thesis “The Anglo-Indian in defense of authority, 1905-1910”.

A significant portion of the B2002-0009 accession documents his research and teaching activities relating to South Asian settlement and migration during the 1990s and includes course materials for HIST 394, a course he developed on this topic. In addition there is correspondence and reports relating to the Sikh Studies program in the Department for the Study of Religion developed at the time he was Director for the Centre for South Asian Studies.

The B2011-0004 accession contributes significantly to his research and teaching activities, including course materials and lecture notes for HIS 101, HUM 101, HIS 232, HIS 282, HIS 364 and HIS 394, relating to British colonialism, the history of India and particularly modern India, and South Asian civilization and migration. Also included are several popular lectures and seminars that Professor Israel gave over the course of his career.

Records documenting his publication activities in Series 4 focus on primarily three projects: his book In the future soil: a social history of the Indo-Canadians in Ontario (1994), his work on Encyclopedia of Canada’s Peoples (1999) while he was Chair of the Multicultural History Society of Ontario and “Safe Haven. The refugee experience of five families”, a book and exhibition produced in cooperation with the Royal Ontario Museum. Accession B2011-0004 also includes notes and correspondence regarding several published reviews and articles by Professor Israel, as well as reviews of these key publications.

An earlier accession (B1995-0052) is represented in Series 6, and includes correspondence, research material, notes and card files relating to, with drafts of, Milton Israel's book, "Communications and Power: propaganda and the press in the Indian Nationalist Struggle, 1920-1947" (1994).

Personal records of Anatol Rapoport, multi-lingual musician, mathematician, and psychologist, a pioneer and lead-figure of the systems sciences, studies in conflict and co-operation, and peace research, author of approximately 500 publications, and professor emeritus of psychology and mathematics at the University of Toronto. The files consist of correspondence, manuscripts, reports, minutes of meetings, university teaching and administrative files, and photographs that document his life and career, principally at the University of Chicago, the University of Michigan, the University of Toronto and the Institut für höhere Studien in Vienna.

This series includes copies of “The Iron Ring”, a private publication for the Camp Wardens, printed as a kind of historical primer and general information circular. There is also a clipping file of publicity concerning the Ritual, correspondence regarding the various publications, and a printed musical score for a composition by Alice Roger Collins, to the text of the poem “The Sons of Martha” by Rudyard Kipling, dedicated to the “engineering profession”.
Accession B1995-0040 includes additional publicity clippings, more recent editions of “The Iron Ring”, a Manual of Camp Procedures and mark ups for a collection of Kipling poems. Accession B2009-0029 includes a copy of the reprinted Twenty Poems by Rudyard Kipling, issue no.8 of “The Iron Ring”, The Manual of Camp Procedure (1988), various articles and publicity concerning the Canadian postage stamp honouring the 75th anniversary of the creation of the Ritual, issued in April 2000.
