File consists of handwritten lecture notes by Nouwen from Dr. K.V. de Loo’s course on Diagnostic Testing and Epilepsy tests, Psychology Department, University of Nijmegen.

Sermon on joy and suffering

Item consists of a manuscript of a sermon on joy and suffering. Nouwen begins with: "It is remarkable how many books there are written about sorrow, grief, anxiety - and how few about job." He suggests that it is hard to be joyful, but underscores that Paul calls us to be joyful just as the angels called on the poor shepherds to rejoice even when things were not perfect.

Materials regarding Thomas Merton

Sub-series consists of materials collected by Nouwen related to Thomas Merton. Sub-series includes newspaper articles, mimeographed letters from Merton, several copies of Merton’s manuscripts and several of Merton’s commercially produced audio cassette recordings of his talks to the monks and community of the Abbey of Gethsemani. Sub-series also contains Nouwen’s own records of the materials he collected on Merton. Sub-series also includes materials relating to Merton’s death in 1968 and homilies of funeral services held in his honour.

Notes from lectures on Psychiatry

File consists of handwritten lecture notes by Nouwen from a course on Psychiatry, Psychology Department, University of Nijmegen, including notes on the psychological approach [to psychiatry]. Last two pages of notes do not appear to be in Nouwen’s hand.

Report on voluntary population protection

File consists of a report titled "Rapport Oefening Copex" which is about voluntary service in the population protection group of Nijmegen. This was completed on December 31, 1960 as part of the Psychologisch Laboratorium at the University of Nijmegen. Report includes a copy of an official form documenting Nouwen's voluntary undertaking of a post in the 'Bescherming Bevolking' [Population Protection] of Nijmegen in the function of Aide at the command post. This form is dated October 2, 1960, and is signed by Nouwen. Nouwen likely used his own volunteer experience of participating in an exercise of civilian protecting during war situations or disasters.

Drafts of marriage homily for Sophie and Seamus Fitzgerald

File consists of two draft typescripts of a marriage homily given by Nouwen at the wedding of Sophie (Sophy) and Seamus Fitzgerald. Draft (1) is in Dutch. Draft (2) is a partial typescript of the same homily in English. It is likely Nouwen did the wedding service in both English and Dutch.

Marriage homily for Rick and Margaret [last names unknown]

Item consists of a manuscript of a marriage homily given by Nouwen at the wedding of Rick and Margaret (last names unknown). Nouwen suggests a good marriage consists of giving to each other, giving to others, and giving to God, as well as forgiving each other, others and God.
