Records documenting Professor Acland’s research, publication and teaching activities. Includes notebooks, scripts and draft papers, photographs, slides, and negatives. The fonds is dominated by over 4000 prints and negatives documenting his research interest in and publication of his book The Gothic Vault and the book Building by the Sea written with Eric Arthur on the study of maritime architecture on Canada’s east coast. Also included are numerous prints of Toronto where Acland was active in the preservation of historic buildings such as Old City Hall.

This accession documents to a limited degree James Acland’s research, teaching and publications. It is limited because very little of his textual records survived, although there is a good number of notebooks that were mostly likely used for lectures. Records relating to his architectural conservation work especially relating to saving Old City Hall are held at the City of Toronto Archives.

This accession does however give a good representation of Acland’s photographic work that formed the basis of his research and publications. There are extensive photographs and negatives relating to The Gothic Vault as well as Building by the Sea. There is a large collection of photographs taken on a trip to Europe in 1964. These would have most certainly been used for research and teaching. All the images in this collection are well identified in terms of their location and site. However, few give specific dates. It is assumed that most of the images were taken through the 1960s and some in the early 1970s.

Sometime after his death, a collection of 25,000 slides was donated to the University of Toronto and was distributed among 15 departments. A catalogue of these slides was prepared by the Centre for Medieval Studies and published in 1984: Catalogue of the James Acland Slide Collection. Only a few slides were donated with this accession and it is possible they are duplicates of what is found in the larger collection.

Personal records of James Barron, student of Forestry at the University of Toronto in the 1930s. Includes notes and exercise books from his student days, as well as some employment records and evidence of work done for the Ontario Department of Lands and Forests and Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources. Also includes some photographs of forestry work and study, depictions of Killala Lake, Abitibi camps, Owakonze, Lake Temagami, Great Lakes Lumber, Long Lake, Marathon Paper Mills, and Manitou Falls.

Consists of 6 accessions which include correspondence, notes, notebooks, sketchbooks, sketches, designs for stage sets, costume designs, photoprints and photonegatives, scrapbooks documenting the artistic lives of Frederick Coates and his wife, Louise Brown. The photographs include images of Frederick's family, his military service in World War I, dance, and his work in the reconstruction of the faces of maimed soldiers, his studio and their house, and models of buildings. Also includes Guest Book for "Sherwood House", with invitations to dramatic productions held therein; three letters between members of the Hoitt family (1867, 1885). Also included are water colours of costume designs, 5 Art Deco works of art, consisting of Coates' three stage sets for 'Danse Fronds' (ca. 1929), 'Fashions' (ca. 1928), and 'The Storm Centre' (1927); a theatre design featuring a clown; and a still life entitled 'The Blue Plate' (1922). Artifacts include medals, printing blocks, pottery, 20 modelling tools and a sculpture documenting their careers and artistic work.

Records relating to the founding and early operation of the Association of Part-Time Students, created and collected by its founding president Joyce Denyer. Includes briefs, reports, correspondence, memos, minutes, surveys and essays. Also documented, is Denyer's advisory role to the Ontario government on matters concerning part-time students especially regarding issues of student financial support. There are also some records relating to the Department of University Extension.

Correspondence regarding the "Ritual of the Calling" along with six photographs document student R.G.K. Morrisson, a graduate from the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering in 1923. Included are: a group photo of the class of 2T3 in 1920, two composites of the Engineering Society Executive for 1921-23, two group photographs of residence of North House, Devonshire residence and a 1973 photograph of the 50th Anniversary Re-union of the class of 1923 at Hart House.

Copy of "Erindale College Library, the Early Years", a history of the Library submitted by Mrs. June Seel for the Histories of Libraries course at the Faculty of Library Science. Appendices contain original photographs and examples of publications of Erindale College Library.

Documents belonging to Merwin Malcolm who was the project manager for Stone Webster, the company hired to construct Robarts Library. Records relate to the design and building of Robarts Library and include progress photos, design photos and drawings, correspondence, reports and plans.

Files created by Mr. Vaughan during his service as Chairman of the Property Committee and later of the Board of Governors documenting his involvement in the university's major physical expansion programme; and photographs showing exterior and interior views of house at Maplehearn (1895-1898).

Included are files on the opening of the Best Institute, and the following activities linked to the impending construction of the Medical Sciences Building: a review of the BBDMR, renovations to the Banting Institute (including a blueprint), and meetings Faculty of Medicine Advisory Committee on Audio-Visual Resources. Included is a photograph of Clarke and Charles H. Best (1970), and of a frigate and corvette on which Clarke served as a group radar officer during World War II (1944-1945).

Professional records of Dr. William Stewart McCullough, professor of Near Eastern Studies. Records include correspondence concerning publications, faculty appointments, and teaching. Also included are manuscripts for Dr. McCullough's various article publications. There are also University publications such as convocation programmes, invitations, menus, and calendars. Records also include photographs of Dr. McCullough and other individuals.

Consists of records collected by Gray while working on a history of Hart House Theatre and Robert Gill. Included are Hart House Theatre scrapbooks compiled by Gill containing programs, clippings and photographs; financial records of Hart House Theatre as well as some original correspondence; numerous photographs of Hart House Threatre, Hart House and its staff; scrapbook and minutes book of the Players Club. Included as well, is a manuscript on the history of Hart House Theatre (draft) written by Jack Gray as well as taped interviews conducted by Gray with Hart House Theatre staff including Robert Gill.

B1977-0046: This accession consists of various materials donated by the family of Robert Stanton Gill following his death. It largely chronicles his career as theatre director of Hart House Theatre as well as his involvement in other theatre houses in the United States and Canada. Photographs, diplomas and some sparse correspondence document Harold Caples's education in the Faculty of Medicine (M.D. 1924) as well as his career as an obstetrician and gynecologist. He is reported to have been the 3rd Canadian to have attained this specialist recognition by being admitted as a member of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. The photographs relate mainly to the University of Toronto and include the graduating class for Medicine in 1924, the University of Toronto senior basketball team in 1923-24 as well as a composite of the Nu Sigma Nu fraternity for 1923-24. The correspondence relates to his medical training both at the University of Toronto and in the United Kingdom, as well as his early work in radiology and the use of radium. There are also military documents relating to his service both in World War I and World War II.

3 ring-binders containing notes for laboratory experiments conducted by fifth-year medical students (1964-1967) and other laboratory experiments (1965-1971), compiled by C. R. Cowan when he was a research associate in the Banting and Best Department of Medical Research and in the Department of Teaching Laboratories, Faculty of Medicine.

Also includes a photograph of the Toronto School of Medicine, graduating class of 1870-1871; graduates, including George Hoyle Cowan, are identified on the front. Also accompanied by graduation diplomas.

Laboratory notebooks and microscope slides relating to the activity, consumption, respiration, and vaginal smears of lemming, in particular, and other experiments by students or research assistants of Professor Fisher; presidential address and articles by Fisher.

Records documenting the activites of Milton Brown as professor in the Department of Hygiene and Preventive Medicine and head (1956-1967) of the Department of Public Health. There are extensive files on administrative matters and courses; on courses given at the Canadian Civil Defence College; on research relating to tuberculosis, other communicable diseases, and the development of vaccines; and on committees, especially those that Brown chaired, such as the Panel on Infection and Immunity of the Defence Research Board and the Committee on Accident Prevention of the Canadian Public Health Association. Some of Dr. Brown's files incorporate material produced by Donald Fraser, and there are also some of the latter's files.
