Personal records of Anatol Rapoport, multi-lingual musician, mathematician, and psychologist, a pioneer and lead-figure of the systems sciences, studies in conflict and co-operation, and peace research, author of approximately 500 publications, and professor emeritus of psychology and mathematics at the University of Toronto. The files consist of correspondence, manuscripts, reports, minutes of meetings, university teaching and administrative files, and photographs that document his life and career, principally at the University of Chicago, the University of Michigan, the University of Toronto and the Institut für höhere Studien in Vienna.

The collection consists of materials relating to the anti-Vietnam War activities of Ann Buttrick. Topics include civil liberties, Canadian policy vis-a-vis the United States, and the Annie Mae Aquash case. Papers were created in connection with The International Committee to Free South Vietnamese Political Prisoners from Detention, Torture and Death, which was a committee of the Canadian Council of Churches, and Voice of Women, a non-governmental organization, and the Canadian Religious Society of Friends (Quakers). They include correspondence, Vietnamese government publications, audio recordings of Toronto events, newspaper clippings, and printed matter.

Art and Letters Club

Since the 1960s, Prof. Hume has been an active member of the Arts and Letters Club of Toronto, serving as its President from 1976-1978. This series documents his participation especially in the Annual Spring Review which he often helped to write, direct and produce.

General documents on the Arts and Letters Club include some correspondence, memorabilia and one file on applications for membership. Most records however relate to the Annual Spring Review. Included are notes detailing concepts and organizational matters, scripts, music scores, programs and correspondence.

Many shows are well documented beginnings in 1965 to 1992, with only a few gaps. Also included in this series is an audio recording of Prof. Hume playing the piano and singing various pieces he composed for Spring Reviews.

Oral History Interview by Elizabeth Wilson. Discusses family background and his education in New Zealand through post-retirement work in architectural restoration and conservation. Focusses on Toronto years, 1923-1973, including his architectural education and apprenticeship, and appointment to the School of Architecture. The faculty, curricula, and students are discussed as well as Sidney Earle Smith. Other subjects covered include the effects of the depression on the architectural profession, work on the Planning Board of the City of Toronto and on the architectural design competition for Toronto's City Hall.

Ashley, Charles Allan (oral history)

Interview with Allan Ashley, professor of Political Economy, by Robin Harris. Discusses early family and educational background, World War I service and his first Canadian appointment to Queen's University. Describes the development of the Commerce and Finance Course in the Dept. of Political Economy at the University of Toronto, his relations with members of the Dept., successive presidents of the University, and residential life in Trinity College, 1934-1974, including comments on the Provosts, the role of Gerald Larkin and student acitivities.

Audio and video recordings

Series consists of audio and video recordings of performances by Ron Collier and of compositions and arrangements by Collier. The series includes audio cassettes from the Duke Ellington Society that were issued to its members; audio recordings of Collier's lectures on Ellington at Humber College (1980s); performances by the Ron Collier Quintet and the Ron Collier Tentet; and records from the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) radio transcription service of performances by Collier, his groups, and his compositions and arrangements.

Audio and visual material

Series consists of audio and video material that documents Prof. Venkatacharya’s community activity, teaching, and family life. Video recordings capture Venkatacharya’s presentations, many of these given at community centres and individuals’ homes. The topics of these talks generally focus on spiritual texts and understanding, though also include some academic presentations, including an event at the Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library. Other videos document the community involvement of both Prof. Venkatacharya and his wife, Vijaya. These include an event recognizing the contributions of Venkatacharya to the Hindu Institute of Learning, the organization’s fundraising initiatives, as well as Diwali celebrations at the AWIC Community and Social Services. Home recordings of family gatherings are also included in the material.

Audio recordings

Series consists of audio recordings of works by Talivaldis Kenins, including some recordings of performances conducted by Kenins and some world premieres. Many of the recordings were made for CBC broadcast. Others were performed at the University of Toronto. The series also includes three audio cassettes from a 1996 program on CJRT-FM that featured an interview with Kenins interspersed with recordings of his compositions, and recordings of Kenins' son George Juris Kenins performing the cello.

Series consists of photographs of members and staff of the New Catholic Times, including negatives and contact prints, and a sound recording of a talk given by Monika Hellwig, LL.B., Ph.D., on Catholic Education. Photographs depict members, staff, and guests of the New Catholic Times working or posing at their desk, in meetings, or attending events including conferences or presentations, a picnic, a party, and a peace demonstration.
