The collection consists primarily of correspondence written to Townshend. The letters are from family, friends, political colleagues and people who worked for him or served under him. Many were written to Townshend between 1784 and 1786 after he was made Baron Sydney and when he was secretary of state in the Pitt government, with many asking for political favours.

Consists of an archival collection about the history of the Soviet peasantry, collectivization and repression in the countryside during the 1930s. Records were acquired by Professor Lynne Viola in the course of co-editing two document collections on Soviet collectivization. Included are photocopies of documents from the major archives in Moscow. Some of the documents on collectivization and dekulakization became accessible to researchers in the 1990s, which enabled the publication of the 5-volume The Tragedy of the Soviet Village: Collectivization and Dekulakization, 1927-1939 [Tragediia sovetskoi derevni: kollektivizatsiia i raskulachivanie: dokumenty i materialy 1927-1939], a work that was the result of collaboration of historians from six countries: Russia, USA, Canada, UK, Australia, and South Korea. Another important publication, which was a result of the collaboration, is the 2-volume set The Politburo and the Peasantry: Deportation and Special Resettlement 1930-1940 [Politbiuro i krestianstvo: vysylka, spetsposelenie 1930-1940]. The greater part of this publication contains material from the Archive of the President of the Russian Federation. The collection contains photocopies of documents that were not included in the above mentioned publications, but have enormous historical significance and archival value. The documents came from five major archives in the Russian Federation: The Russian Center for the Preservation and Study of Records of Modern History [Rossiiskii tsentr khraneniia i izucheniia dokumentov noveishei istorii]; The State Archive of the Russian Federation [Gosudarstvennyi arkhiv Rossiiskoi Federatsii]; The Russian State Archive of the Economy [Rossiiskii gosudarstvennyi arkhiv ekonomiki]; The Russian State Military Archive [Rossiiskii gosudarstvennyi arkhiv ekonomiki]; and The Central Archive of the Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation [Tsentral’nyi arkhiv Federal’noi sluzhby bezopasnosti Rossiiskoi Federatsii] (which is the successor to the Soviet secret police agencies OGPU, NKVD, and the KGB, and which is still closed to all but a handful of researchers.) In addition, the collection includes documents from provincial archives of Russia and Ukraine. The gathering of this material was a part of the Stalin Era Research and Archives Project (SERAP) based at the Centre for Russian and East European Studies (now the Centre for European, Russian, and Eurasian Studies) at the University of Toronto.

The collection consists of letters and documents concerning the van der Smissen family in Germany and Canada. The correspondence includes letters to Jacob Gysbert van der Smissen from Johann Lavator, a Reformed minister in Zurich, from Johann Heinrich Jung-Stilling, an eminent theological writer, and from Carl Heinrich von Bogatzky, an influential and prolific Lutheran writer in Germany. The remaining letters are primarily family correspondence, along with a family history, a travel journal, and the sermons of Wilhelm Leendert. It also includes W.H. van der Smisson's English translation, in the original metres, of Goethe's Faust.

Collection of palm-leaf and paper manuscripts [ca. 1700-1900] of Sanskrit works mainly in Telugu and Bengali, and manuscript transcripts, microfilm and photocopies of Sanskrit works mainly in Devanagari and Telugu.

The collection consists largely of papers concerned with industrial engineering, including the description and 103 photos of the building of the Leaside Bridge in Toronto. It also contains Snaith's personal accounts and diaries covering the years 1914-60.

Included in the family correspondence are letters from William and his wife Elizabeth to their children, as well letters from relatives in Ireland, family friends and from important figures of the day who were acquaintances of Tyrrell. This accession consists of the personal records of Marion Dorothy Walker. The records document Ms. Walker’s activities as a production assistant for Hart House Theatre, as a professor in the University of Toronto Department of Fine Art and as a creative writer. Most of the records in this fonds document Harris' research in the history of Higher Education, a subject on which he published widely and gave numerous addresses. Some limited documentation provides researchers with some information on his contributions to several administrative posts. There are also early lecture files on English literature which document his early teaching career and some files relating to the researching and writing of the university history although most of those records are in the records of the University Historian. Finally there are original university records collected by Harris regarding the University of Toronto Faculty Association and its predecessors.

Collection consists of manuscript drafts (both holograph and typescript) of McKay's published and unpublished poems and other writings. Publications represented in this collection include: Night Field: Poems (1991), Apparatus (1997), Another Gravity (2000), Vis a Vis (2001), Deactivated West 100 (2005) and Strike/Slip (2006). Other materials in the collection are manuscripts from other writers edited by McKay, as well as correspondence with various writers and friends. It also includes extensive research material, most of it holograph, on writers for his teaching activities.

The fonds consists of the personal papers of Gilbert Edward Jackson, a former professor of economics at the University of Toronto. Compiled from inventories of three accessions, the fonds documents Mr. Jackson’s career, participation and achievements as an economist, consultant and professor in Canada and England, during the early 1920s to late 1950s, with the greatest emphasis being on the mid 1930s to early 1950s. Arranged chronologically by function, the fond is divided into ten series. They include: Personal material, related to various activities, accomplishments and events that occurred in Mr. Jackson’s private life; Teaching activities; Manuscripts written by Mr. Jackson; the Canadian Tariff Board; the National War Labour Board; the National Selective Service Advisory Board; Other Federal Government research and reports; the Bank of England; his consulting firm, Gilbert Jackson & Associates; and Photographs.

Within the fonds, a cross over among these series exists as the research Mr. Jackson completed for himself was also utilized for assignments produced for other consulting economists and firms. For instance, the research that was completed to write submissions to the Canadian Tariff Board (Series 4) was also utilized to publish articles located in Series 3 (Manuscripts) and Series 9 (Gilbert Jackson & Associates). Related topics can also be found in Series 5 (National War Labour Board) through Series 7 (Other Federal Government research and reports, as they document the extensiveness of Mr. Jackson’s involvement and research completed for the Federal Government of Canada between the late 1920s to 1950s. Although the material within the series are for different Boards, this cross over among the series documents Mr. Jackson’s involvement and active role within the world of Canadian economics during the mid twentieth century.

Although Mr. Jackson taught at the University of Toronto for roughly 15 years, only a small amount of records exist in the fonds that document his teaching career. The records that do exist in Series 2, (Teaching activities) provide a brief overview of the themes covered and issues addressed during his lectures delivered in the 1950’s. However, additional documents related to Mr. Jackson’s academic career at the University of Toronto can be found in Series 3 (Manuscripts), the correspondence in Series 8 (Bank of England), and Series 9 (Gilbert Jackson & Associates) as the records within the files highlight his relationships, activities, teaching and mentoring of graduate students who attended the University of Toronto.

This fonds will be of great interest to researchers studying the financial condition of Canada and England during the Great Depression and First and Second World Wars. An individual who sharpened the minds of the youth at the time, Gilbert Jackson’s fonds documents the ideologies that shaped the economic world of today, as “it has been said that half the leading economists in Canada today studied under him” [1]

Fonds consists primarily of the academic and professional records of Robert William McKay and
is divided into five series:

Rules for compiling and copy of a logging report (with photographs), "Logging Operation of J.R. Booth Co. Ltd.," by Charles P. Howard and Robert M. Bullock, carried out for the Faculty of Forestry in 1931; "Notes on logging dam construction" by J. A. Gilles, Upper Ottawa Improvement Co., 1931; table of wages for logging and sawmill industry, 1913-1931; sketch maps, a sketch of equipment, and publications relating to the forest products industry in Ontario.

Personal records of Helen J. Breslauer, consisting primarily of a study of which she was a principal investigator along with Professor Howard Andrews, “Co-operative housing: a case study of decision-making in design and user satisfaction” (1968-1975). This fonds also includes files relating broadly to the development of an urban studies programme at Erindale College, with particular emphasis on course CGR/SOC 340E: “Concepts, methods, and values in urban studies” (1972-1976).

Seven of the eight series in this fonds deal with the Co-operative housing case study and are arranged according to the areas of research mapped out in the interim reports [see Series 7]. In addition there is an administrative series and a reports series which provide an overview of the research methodology, findings and administration of the research project.

Papers consist of research notes , manuscript drafts, final manuscripts, galleys, correspondence for her published works: The Space a Name Makes; Blue Panic; By Heart: Elizabeth Smart, A Life; Shadow Maker: Gwendolyn MacEwen; The Red Shoes; Margaret Atwood Starting Out; The Home Ladder; published writings in journals and anthologies; research material relating to her two biographies, Gwen MacEwen and Elizabeth Smart. 7 VHS and 30 cassette tapes; 34 photos.

This collection is largely comprised of material used by Professor H. Gordon Skilling in writing his book, Czechoslovakia's Interrupted Revolution (Princeton University Press, 1976). It contains newsclippings, typescripts, Radio Free Europe reports and analyses, and special issues of newspapers and ephemera printed during the 1968 intervention.

This fonds contains Etienne Gilson's correspondence, articles, lectures and pocket diaries for the period 1927-1978. It also contains biographical material, copies of articles in journals, articles by others about Gillson, some reviews of his published works, memorabilia, and the notebooks of Abbe Andre Gilson, younger brother of Etienne. In addition there are photographs and audio cassettes.

Collection of printed works with extensive manuscript revisions, partly in author's hand, and 48 photos of actresses in costume as characters from Daughters of Dawn; miscellaneous photos of Bliss Carman and others.

B1998-0034: This accession consists of the professional records of James Maurice Stockford Careless and documents his career as a student, teacher, writer, and historian at the University of Toronto. Unfortunately, many of Professor Careless’ early records were destroyed or damaged in a flood at Sidney Smith Hall in 1958. As a result, this accession mainly documents Dr. Career’s later career. Most of this accession pertains to his research and writing, most notably, his work on Brown of the Globe. However, Professor Careless’ student, teaching, administrative, and professional activities are also documented. Types of records include student notes, professional correspondence, research notes, and draft manuscripts. No personal family records are contained herein. (15 boxes, 1852-1997)

Accompanying these textual records are photographs of the Clark's on tour in Europe with the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir; of Dr. Augustus Stephen Vogt; of members of the post-graduate course, Royal College of Dental Surgeons (1918), and of Ralph Mallory Clark (BASc 1926, instructor in Engineering Drawing, 1930-1942).

Fonds consists of material documenting the professional life and work of Prof. Judith Friedland. Records focus on her education and career within academia, in particular as a professor, and former Chair of the Department of Occupational Therapy. Material also covers some aspects of Prof. Friedland’s career working as an occupational therapist. Records include typescripts and presentation notes, administrative records from the Department of Occupational Therapy, teaching and course material, clinical notes, correspondence, awards, and biographical material.

The history of occupational therapy in Canada has significant coverage through records related to the research and publication of Prof. Friedland’s book, Restoring the Spirit, as well as through the collected records of Helene Primrose LeVesconte, Thelma Cardwell, and Isobel Robinson. Represented in Series 8 to 10, these three individuals each served as former heads of the UofT’s Department of Occupational Therapy, in addition to teaching and practicing occupational therapy. The collected historical material includes minutes, typescripts, correspondence, artifacts and teaching material.

Fonds consists of records documenting aspects of the professional life and work of Prof. Gunderson. Material reflects the Professor’s academic interests in areas such as pay equity and mandatory retirement, as well as representing his work consulting for various governmental agencies, particularly Human Resources and Social Development Canada. Records include offprints, data print-outs, correspondence, background material and court exhibits.

Correspondence and research about Frank Plumpton Ramsey (1903-1930), mathematician, philosopher, economist. Ramsey biographer Laura Leavitt-Kahn gathered letters from old school friends of Ramsey, from Winchester School to colleagues and students at Cambridge. Included are her notes and research for the biography, which was never completed. Correspondence from Ramsey’s wife, Lettice, is also present. Copies of some of his work and correspondence to his parents, Wittgenstein and others form part of this material. Originals of these are held by Ramsey’s grandson.

Contains notes and transcribed letters taken by Ann Robson as part of research on Helen Taylor (womens’ rights suffragist, daughter of Harriet Taylor Mill, 1808-1858, and stepdaughter of philosopher and economist John Stuart Mill, 1806-1873). Includes transcriptions of letters exchanged between members of the Mill-Taylor family, as well as general notes on other 19th and 20th century writing on the subject of women’s rights.
The notes appear to have been taken during Robson’s consultation of a number of different archival collections at different institutions, which she noted in the margins. The bulk of the notes appear to refer to the Mill-Taylor collection held at the London School of Economics (LSE).

This first accession of Kildare Dobbs’s papers contains drafts of his published works (Running to Paradise, The Great Fur Opera, Anatolian Suite: Travels and Discursions in Turkey, The Eleventh Hour: Poems for the Third Millennium, Casablanca: The Poem, Running the Rapids: A Writer’s Life, Cassanova in Venice: A Raunchy Rhyme, Away From Home: Canadian Writers in Exotic Places); other writing drafts, including writing for newspapers, magazines, his contributions to CBC radio programs “Ideas” and “Anthology”; his travel files pertaining to all of the places he visited (and wrote about) around the world; a significant amount of correspondence (both physical and digital correspondence); personal files and documents relating to his family’s history; professional files; photographs; cut-outs and print-outs of published articles; notebooks and journals; audiovisual and digital materials; and other files relating to the life and work of Kildare Dobbs.

Included are audio cassettes and typed summaries of interviews conducted by Coleman Romalis with members of Canada’s Jewish community in Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal. Individuals interviewed by Romalis include Ben Shek, Becky Lapedes, Morris Biderman, Jack Cowan, Sam Lipshitz, Manya Lipshitz, Ben Kayfetz, Polly Weinstein, Henry Weinstein, Dave Ship and Itche Goldberg. Interviews address their involvement in various organizations including the United Jewish People’s Order (UJPO), the International Workers’ Order (IWO), the Labour League, the Workmen’s Circle and the Canadian Jewish Congress.

Scope and content:
This collection contains drafts and proofs for a number of Sarah’s published monographs, including Little Eurekas (Biblioasis, 2007), A Day’s Grace (The Porcupine’s Quill, 2003), and The Touchstone: Poems New and Selected (Anansi, 1992), along with correspondence and drafts of Sarah’s contributions to the Porcupine’s Quill Essential Poets series, on Margaret Avison, Don Coles, and George Johnston. Also included are over sixty published examples of Sarah’s poetry, essays, interviews, and fiction, in Canadian and American periodicals such as The Malahat Review, ARC, The Threepenny Review, The Walrus, and The New Quarterly.
In addition, this collection includes correspondence, drafts and published versions of Sarah’s journalistic work, which has appeared in Canadian newspapers such as The Globe and Mail, The Montreal Gazette, and The Ottawa Citizen. Materials relating to Sarah’s editorial work for Cormorant Books and House of Anansi Press are also included, along with material pertaining to Sarah’s involvement in numerous literary events.
