Records document Milton Israel’s graduate studies at University of Michigan, and his publishing, teaching and research activities as Professor of South Asian Studies in the Department of History at the University of Toronto. The records relating to his graduate studies consist of research notes and some footnote drafts for his doctoral thesis “The Anglo-Indian in defense of authority, 1905-1910”.

A significant portion of the B2002-0009 accession documents his research and teaching activities relating to South Asian settlement and migration during the 1990s and includes course materials for HIST 394, a course he developed on this topic. In addition there is correspondence and reports relating to the Sikh Studies program in the Department for the Study of Religion developed at the time he was Director for the Centre for South Asian Studies.

The B2011-0004 accession contributes significantly to his research and teaching activities, including course materials and lecture notes for HIS 101, HUM 101, HIS 232, HIS 282, HIS 364 and HIS 394, relating to British colonialism, the history of India and particularly modern India, and South Asian civilization and migration. Also included are several popular lectures and seminars that Professor Israel gave over the course of his career.

Records documenting his publication activities in Series 4 focus on primarily three projects: his book In the future soil: a social history of the Indo-Canadians in Ontario (1994), his work on Encyclopedia of Canada’s Peoples (1999) while he was Chair of the Multicultural History Society of Ontario and “Safe Haven. The refugee experience of five families”, a book and exhibition produced in cooperation with the Royal Ontario Museum. Accession B2011-0004 also includes notes and correspondence regarding several published reviews and articles by Professor Israel, as well as reviews of these key publications.

An earlier accession (B1995-0052) is represented in Series 6, and includes correspondence, research material, notes and card files relating to, with drafts of, Milton Israel's book, "Communications and Power: propaganda and the press in the Indian Nationalist Struggle, 1920-1947" (1994).

Donald Glen Ivey fonds

This accession documents Prof. Ivey’s career as professor of physics and university administrator from the time of his appointment in 1950 to his post retirement activities up to 1994. Prof. Ivey’s career centred around the promotion and teaching of the science of physics both at the university level and the secondary school level. His personal and professional correspondence concerns these two activities. Other records document his work with high schools and the provincial Department of Education in developing curriculum for high school physics courses, as well as his administrative and academic responsibilities at the University of Toronto. An extensive collection of his lecture notes, problems and examinations for undergraduate courses in physics at the University of Toronto will also be found in this accession.

His activities outside the University are documented in the records relating to his television programmes prepared for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and other public television companies. This accession contains many complete scripts of these programs including “The Nature of Things” series in the 1960’s. In addition this accession holds a very complete series of addresses including manuscripts, notes and correspondence.

While Prof. Ivey did publish articles and two textbooks on physics during his academic career, little original documentation in the form of manuscripts has survived. Correspondence on publishing may be found within his professional correspondence.

Manuscripts and publications

This series documents Professor Lang’s writings, unpublished and published, over a forty-year period. He has written two books, Financing universities in Ontario (2000) and Mergers in higher education: lessons in theory and practice (2001), which was translated into Chinese and published in Shanghai in 2008. He has contributed chapters to eleven books, and had numerous papers published in refereed journals, along with review essays, other publications, papers, and reports. The research files (some contain original documents) for and a copy of his doctoral thesis, are also present in this series. The titles, where they exist, to these research files were those used by Professor Lang.

The listing of manuscripts and publications is not complete. For a complete listing of Professor Lang’s publications, see his curriculum vitae in B2011-0003/001(01). Some of his reports not present in this series can be found in other series.

Digital files from B2018-0001 include correspondence and drafts for his book Mergers in higher education: lessons in theory and practice (2001), as well as a report for the Atkinson Foundation, A Primer on Formula Funding: A Study of Student-focused Funding in Ontario (2003).

The files contain a combination of correspondence, drafts, background and research material and notes. The arrangement is chronological by date of document or date of publication.

OISE/UT

This series begins with files that Professor Lang’s broad activities within OISE/UT as recorded in his performance assessments, activity reports and course evaluations. There are followed by files on the Provost’s OISE Committee of the late 1970s through the mid-1980s, which include material on the first pass at the thorny issue of the possible integration of OISE into the University of Toronto. Most of the files relating to the Higher Education Group, with which Professor Lang was primarily associated at OISE, contain material spanning almost 20 years on examination questions.

The bulk of this series, however, relates to the merger of OISE with the U of T to create, in 1995, OISE/UT. Professor Lang’s personal work binders on the merger are present, as are legal and other documents on the merger, followed by implementation files, including those of the Academic Implementation Task Force and on the issues relating to OISE’s property. The series concludes with files on the OISE/UT Joint MPHEd program with the Faculty of Medicine (2003-2004).

Professional activities: Council of Ontario Universities

The Council of Ontario Universities (COU) was formed on December 3, 1962 as the “Committee of Presidents of Provincially Assisted Universities and Colleges of Ontario,” with its current name being adopted in 1971. The mandate of the COU is to “build awareness of the university sector’s contributions to the social, economic and cultural well-being of the province and the country, as well as the issues that impact the sector’s ability to maximize these contributions.” It works with Ontario’s publicly assisted universities and one associate member institution, the Royal Military College of Canada. This series documents the activities of a number of its committees and task forces, which are detailed below, approximately in order of activity.

Professor Lang was a member of the COU’s Committee on Enrolment Statistics and Projections from 1976 to 1990. In 1982-1983 he sat on its Special Committee on BILD Administrative Procedures and from 1987 to 1991 was a member of its Research Advisory Group. In 1991 he was invited to be part of a small task force to present proposals to the government for an income contingent repayment plan for Ontario students. Throughout much of the 1990s, he was involved with the COU’s Committee on University Accountability and the Performance Indicators for the Public Postsecondary System in Ontario project, better known as the Performance Indicators Project, the purpose of which was to assess the overall Ontario postsecondary sector.

He was also a member of four task forces: Audit Guidelines (1998-2000), Secondary School Issues (1998-2005), Student Financial Assistance (2006-), and Quality Assurance (2008-2010).
The Task Force on Secondary School Issues was established to assess the evaluation of students in the new secondary school program of studies and to make recommendations regarding the monitoring of grading practices and standards.

The COU’s Quality and Productivity Task Force work was to outline “all the quality and productivity initiatives” undertaken to “showcase results for the government’s increased investment in universities.” Its report, presented in March 2006, was followed by the COU Task Force on Quality Measurements, chaired by David Naylor of the University of Toronto. It was charged with addressing the “broad issues related to quality measurement, developing the long-term strategies for COU’s work with the government and the Higher Education Quality Council of Ontario (HEQCO).” [1]

Files in B2018-0001 include correspondence with U of T and COU colleagues, as well as further records related to his role on the COU’s Committee on University Accountability. Also included are further records about the COU's Task Force on Quality Assurance (2008-2010), including its subsequent transition and implementation phase.

The files in this series contain correspondence, memoranda, notes, minutes of meetings, drafts of reports, and assorted background reports and other documentation.

Professional activities: Ontario. Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities

Professor Lang’s first major collaboration with the then Ministry of Colleges and Universities began in 1991 when he was a member of the Minister’s Task Force on University Accountability. Later he was involved in several joint projects with the Ministry and its successors [the Ministry of Education and Training (from 1995) and from 2000, the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities] and the Council of Ontario Universities; in particular, their Steering Committee on Ontario Graduate Survey (1997-), their Joint Steering Committee on OSAP (1998-2001), and their Key Performance Indicators project (2000-2005). In 2006 he became a member of the Ministry’s Joint Working Group on Student Access Guarantee. From 2008 to 2011 he was the Ministry’s Working Group and Steering Committee on Transfer. Not all of these activities are documented in this series.

In 2006-2007 the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities undertook two inter-related research projects “aimed generally at learning about the characteristics of ‘first-generation’ students.” The first, “College Choice”, focused on the factors that influenced students in seeking post-secondary education and their choices of institutions to attend. The second, dubbed Project STAR (Student Achievement and Retention), “sought to determine the factors that influence the academic performance and retention of students in the first year of university.” It was sponsored by the Canada Millenium Scholarship Foundation and Statistics
Canada.

Files in B2018-0001 document Professor Lang's role as Special Advisor to the Deputy Minister, in particular his involvement with the negotiations between the Government of Ontario and Ontario universities regarding the second Strategic Mandate Agreement (SMA2), and Ontario colleges regarding the Colleges Applied Research and Development Fund [CARDF].

Also included are files regarding the creation of a francophone university in Ontario; the Joint Working Group on Student Access Guarantee, regarding the modernization of the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP); and the Steering Committee on Transfer Credits.

Professional activities (other)

This series documents professional activities other than those described in the two previous series. Included is material on consulting and special projects, boards of governors of educational institutions that Professor Lang sat on, and his association with a number of other educational agencies and groups in Canada and elsewhere. Of the last, the most documentation is on the Ontario Council on University Affairs, the Premier’s Council for Economic Renewal, and the Sweden/Ontario Bilateral Exchange Seminar for Senior Academic Administrators (1982-1983). The arrangement in this section is by name of organization or event.

The files may contain any combination of correspondence, memoranda, minutes of meetings, notes, and reports.

Files from B2018-0001 include further records documenting Lang’s active involvement with the Board of Trustees of the Toronto School of Theology (2008 - ; Chair, Institutional Evaluations Committee, 2014-2017) and the Board of Governors of Saint Augustine’s Seminary. His work as Chair of the Strategic Asset Study Committee (2011-2014) for the Archdiocese of Toronto is also documented.

This series consists of unpublished and published manuscripts written by Helen Lenskyj over the course of her career. Includes: materials related to Lenskyj’s books, journal articles, reviews, reports, workshop presentations, conference addresses, and newspaper and magazine articles. Also included are manuals written by Lenskyj while she worked for the Ontario Ministry of Culture and Recreation.

The bulk of these manuscripts are subdivided into their respective subject areas, based on the four primary research interests (gender and sport, sexual education, education, and Olympic critiques) of Lenskyj during her career. This is the arrangement in which the manuscripts where donated and this order has been preserved.

The records in this accession document Dr. Alick Little’s research, teaching and publication activities over a forty-year medical career with the University of Toronto and two teaching hospitals, Sunnybrook and St. Michael’s in Toronto. Arranged in six series, the records reflect Dr. Little’s primary professional activity as a medical researcher and administrator of multiple medical studies. Areas of research include the relationship of lipids and heart disease, hereditary fructose intolerance and coronary atherosclerosis. His activities in various professional associations both in Canada and the United States, including his participation on committees, as well as his role in University of Toronto academic and administrative functions are not documented in any detail. Series 1 contains general correspondence with colleagues, students, faculty and administrators at the University of Toronto and other teaching hospitals relating to research, teaching and publication activities. Also included are letters of reference for his staff, research associates and students as well as records documenting other professional relationships with organizations such as the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

The records documenting his activities at Sunnybrook Hospital are primarily concerned with his participation in the Atherosclerosis Project sponsored from 1952 to 1962 by the Department of Veterans Affairs. This study was one of the first in Canada to study the link between lipids and heart disease. These records document fairly completely the administrative history of this study at Sunnybrook, the nature and scope of the research conducted by Dr. Little and his team, the data collected as well as the research results. Series 5 consists of patient case files and summarized data for both control and study groups, data files on other diseases studied in conjunction with the primary study, correspondence, annual reports, and manuscripts of articles.

Although his association with St. Michael’s Hospital dates from the early 1950’s when he established the Diabetic Clinic, the records in Series 2 document primarily his activities following the establishment of the Toronto/McMaster Lipid Research Clinic (LRC) in 1973. In addition to his role as Director of the LRC (see A2002-0009), Dr. Little spearheaded the establishment of other programs at St.Michael’s Hospital. These include the Clinical Investigation Unit and the Lipid Research Laboratory. Records of the Clinical Investigation Unit’s fructosemia case study are included within this series. His participation in the hospital’s Advisory Committee, Department of Medicine and as director of the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism is also documented in this series. Grant application records in Series 4 document requests for funds for other studies on related topics from 1968 to 1992 from the Ontario Heart Foundation (and its successor body, the Heart and Stroke Foundation) as well as Health and Welfare Canada and the U.S. National Institutes of Health. These records also document through curriculum vitae and other records many of the people who were members of the study team collaborating with Dr. Little.

While the bulk of records related to Dr. Little’s work at the Toronto/McMaster Lipid Research Clinic are included in A2002-0009, research material from specific studies conducted through the Toronto McMaster Lipid Research Clinic comprise Series 7 of the J. A. Little fonds. Documentation includes material related to the Apolipoprotein C-II Deficiency Study, the Coronary Primary Prevention Trial (CPPT), as well as components of the multi-year Toronto McMaster Lipid Research Clinics Population (Prevalence) Studies.

Throughout his career, Dr. Little wrote, lectured and published extensively on his own and as part of a research group. Series 3 provides a fairly complete collection of his manuscripts of both published and unpublished writings dating from his time as research associate to professor of medicine at the University of Toronto. Articles on the results of the Department of Veterans Affairs study will be found in Series 5. Manuscripts relating to the official reports produced for the Toronto/McMaster Lipid Research Project are not among these papers and will be found in A2002-0009.

This fonds contains records related to the professional activities and personal life of Dr. Ernest Mastromatteo, occupational physician. The bulk of the material in this fonds documents his roles as a medical practitioner, researcher, and occupational health director. The series documenting the activities of the Nickel Producers’ Environmental Research Association, an association Dr. Mastromatteo was heavily involved in during the 1980s, is the largest, with smaller series documenting his career at Inco, his work with the American Conference of Governmental and Industrial Hygienists, and his many projects, case studies, organizations, associations and societies, as well as legal cases he provided testimony in. There is also a relatively large amount of material documenting his research in the form of addresses, and additional material chronicling his time as a student at both the University of Toronto Faculty of Medicine and the School of Hygiene.

Records include correspondence, notebooks, publications, drafts, prints, reports, meeting minutes and memoranda.

Massey Family fonds

The Massey Family records consist primarily of official and personal documents created by Vincent Massey. They reflect his distinguished diplomatic career, including his terms as Canadian ambassador to the United States during the 1920s and as High Commissioner to London during the 1930s and 1940s, along with his lengthy affiliation with the Liberal Party of Canada. Also represented are his years as Governor-General of Canada and as the leader of the Royal Commission on National Development in the Arts, Sciences and Letters. The moral and financial support given by Vincent and Alice Massey to cultural development in Canada, both individually and through the Massey Foundation, is evident in a wealth of documents relating to the fields of education, music, drama and fine arts (including such institutions and organizations as the National Council of Education, Hart House Quartet, Hart House Theatre, the Dominion Drama Festival, and the National Art Gallery). Their support of the University of Toronto is also well documented. In addition to the records of Vincent Massey, some papers of Alice Massey and correspondence of many members of the Grant, Massey and Parkin families are present.

Massey Family

This fonds consists of one accession documenting three generations of the McCarthy family of Toronto. The majority of records document two graduates of the University of Toronto, Douglas Findlay McCarthy (B.A.Sc, 1929) and his son, Douglas Dale McCarthy (M.D. 1955). Sous fonds 1 consists of personal records of Douglas Findlay McCarthy documenting primarily his years as an engineering student during the mid 1920s at the University of Toronto. Personal diaries cover his education not only for these four years (1924-1929) but also some of his high school years at Malvern Collegiate. Also included are photographs of his team sports in water polo and basketball as well as graduation, and sports artifacts such as two trophies for bowling and rugby. Among the materials in Series 1 are the only documents relating to his father: two engineer’s booklets signed “Geo. A. McCarthy, Moncton, N.B.” and dated 1893.
Sous fonds 2 contains records relating to his son, Dale McCarthy during his time as a medical student in medicine in 1955 and relating to his medical career in the 1960s. However among these materials are some medical prescriptions believed to belong to his maternal grandfather, A.W. Moffatt for the 19th century as well as a Marey Sphygmograph used for measuring blood pressure during the same time period. Unfortunately, there is no documentation regarding his years with the Department of Medicine at the University of Toronto, or his involvement with the Ontario March of Dimes in Northern Ontario.

B1997-0031 (1909-1997, 9 boxes and 2 items): This accession contains correspondence, manuscripts of published and unpublished articles, books and papers, offprints, notes, lectures and works of art organized into nine series. Series I provides some documentation of his early student life as well as a comprehensive curriculum vitae, prepared in 1991. Series II to V are predominantly correspondence, both received and sent, documenting his personal and professional life from his student days at the University of Toronto through his career as University professor in Winnipeg and Toronto. The most comprehensive evidence of his range of writing and social activist activities will be found among Series II General correspondence which spans some thirty-seven years. Articles and correspondence regarding his involvement in the “Harry Crowe Case” will be found in Series III. Series IV and V supplement Series II with correspondence, reports and notes relating to specific activities at the University of Toronto such as the supervision of graduate students and participation in campus groups such as the Faculty Committee on Vietnam and the University League for Social Reform. Some additional teaching materials for courses in history will be found in Series VIII.

Series 6 and 7 relate to scholarly writing and contain predominantly copies of articles and correspondence relating to books published. Unfortunately, few manuscripts for these publications have survived.

The two watercolours in Series 9 provide another dimension that has been overlooked in biographies produced to date – that of amateur artist. The bulk of his original artwork remains with his family as a lasting testament to a multi-faceted and talented scholar.

McNaught, Kenneth W.

United College, Winnipeg

Prof. McNaught was appointed Assistant Professor of history in 1947 at United College (now University of Winnipeg). a college funded by the United Church of Canada. The majority of files in this series document his role in the“Harry Crowe Case” of 1958. Prof. Harry Crowe was a member of the History Department at United College and shared Prof. McNaught’s social democratic views. In April, 1958 the principal of United College, Rev. Wilfrid C. Lockhart, was anonymously sent a letter written by Prof. Crowe to Professor W.A. Packer critical of the College’s administration and the role of the ministers in public administration. Between April and September of that year, the matter escalated culminating in the firing of Prof. Crowe by the Board of Regents in July, 1958. In the fall, three members of the faculty, including Prof. McNaught, threatened to resign over the firing of Prof. Crowe. As a result, the Board accepted their letters of protest as letters of resignation. This resignation from United College led to his eventual appointment at the University of Toronto. Included are correspondence, newspaper and magazine articles, and copies of public statements and one file relating to his research on J. S. Woodsworth for his doctoral dissertation.

Publications

Prof. McNaught began his scholarly publishing with articles and eventually a book based on his Ph.D. dissertation on J. S. Woodsworth entitled A prophet in politics (1959). During his career he published 6 books , numerous chapters in books, articles both for scholarly and popular periodicals (columns in the Toronto Star, Globe and Mail), and about 60 articles for Saturday Night as contributing editor from 1958-1968. He was on the editorial board for the Christian Outlook (1961-1966) and Canadian Forum (1968-1979) from which he resigned because of its denunciation of Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau.
