This accession was acquired by UTARMS in October 1991 from Prof. Edward L. Shorter. Arranged in four series, the accession consists primarily of correspondence bracketing the years 1966-1988. Series 1 is made up of three files devoted to Shorter's curriculum vitae, University of Toronto appointments and research grants and proposals. Series 2, the major portion of the accession, consists of professional and private correspondence. Series 3 is comprised of a single annotated book edited by Shorter. Series 4 is five strips of photo negatives of Edward L. Shorter dating from about the mid-1970's.

Series 1 Correspondence also documents his mentoring role and his role as a referee and evaluator of peer and student work. Fonds consists of material documenting the careers of both Prof. Frederick Winter and Joan Winter, particularly related to their archaeological research. Material in the fonds represents both of their individual work and education, as well as research conducted and presentations given together. The records of Prof. Frederick Winter’s cover his publishing activity, research across Europe, particularly within Greece, teaching, and some aspects of his doctoral work.

Joan Winter’s records make up a larger portion of the fonds’ material with considerable documentation of her undergraduate education at the University of Alberta as well as her time at the University of Toronto. Records also include Joan Winter’s teaching material as well as the tutorials she led for some of Prof. Winter’s courses.

The Winters’ joint research is documented through travel diaries, articles, research, and presentation notes. Some of the presentations are accompanied by photographs and the fonds includes additional graphic material related to their research.
