George Whipple Papers

Ham 2008 accession

Correspondence, diary, talk documenting the career of Dr James Ham, past University of Toronto president. Included is a copy of a diary from 1949 kept by Ham while traveling in England and Europe. There are also documents collected by his wife, Mary Ham, relating to her late husband's role in the Canadian Institute of Advanced Research.

The Masters of Museum Studies program is currently housed within the Faculty of Information. The program started in 1969 as a joint effort between the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) and the University of Toronto's School of Graduate Studies (SGS) as the Master of Museology Graduate Program. In 1980, the program is renamed to Museum Studies program. In 2006, the Museum Studies program is transferred to the Faculty of Information Studies (FIS).

This accession contains files from the Dean of the School of Graduate Studies (Michael R. Marrus) and the Director of the Museum Studies Program (Thierry Ruddel and John Flemming). Some files are labeled C&I which may refer to a department or committee called "Curriculum and Instruction".

The majority of records are correspondence concerning (staff appointments and grievances) and reports (such as program reviews, appraisal, and rehousing the program). Files contain very personal and sensitive information such as salary information and grievances.

This accession consists of photographs and videos documenting the faculty, staff and several events held at the Department of Zoology. Sound recordings consist mainly of recorded lectures from BIO 110. There are also four boxes of administrative files documenting mainly external reviews, planning committees and various reports.

Accession 2003.004 is divided into 2 series according to format. These are: Textual Materials and AudioVisual Records.

The first series, Textual Materials, relates to Hirsh’s activities as CEO of Nelvana Ltd. It is divided into 7 subseries: Development, Legal, Business Affairs, Accounting, Production, Publicity & Distribution, and Photographs. This section also includes 117 pieces of original production artwork (storyboards, animation cels, backgrounds, etc.)

The second series, AudioVisual Records, includes 456 videocassettes and 10 audio documents related to the donor and Nelvana Ltd. Productions. The videos are primarily screening copies, though some document the various stages of production (producer’s cuts, alternative edits, demo reels) and others reflect Hirsh’s interest in animation from outside Canada.

Richard Teleky Papers

Collection consists of extensive drafts, notes, editing and research material for various Teleky works, including: Winter in Hollywood; Pack Up the Moon; Hungarian Rhapsodies; The Paris Years of Rosie Kamin; Goodnight, Sweetheart and other stories; The Hermit's Kiss; The Oxford Book of French-Canadian short stories and early writings. It also includes manuscripts from other writers such as Larry Fineberg, Priscila Uppal, David Plante, Rosemary Sullivan, Adele Wiseman, Anne Carson and Betty Jane Wylie.

2015 acquisition

The Paul Till collection documents many aspects of his career as a photographer. His work with NOW, celebrities, and his occasional shoots of architecture are present. The collection is made up primarily of photographs and negatives, though some textual material is included. The textual material is mostly published art photograph books. Due to his connection to the Toronto music scene, this collection offers insight into who was popular and performing during the 80s and 90s in Toronto.

This accession includes 13 series: ‘AudioVisual’, ‘Awards’, ‘Business Affairs’, ‘Development’, General’, ‘Legal’, Marketing and Distribution’, Photography’, Post-Production’, ‘Pre-Production’, ‘Production’, Publicity’, ‘Publicity-Posters’.

The first series, ‘AudioVisual’, includes 16mm film (including original camera negative from Ready or Not), sound elements, and video tapes (primarily Betacam SP broadcast quality tapes of preproduction material from Canadian Idol).

The second series, ‘Awards’, includes awards for a number of Insight productions.

The third series, ‘Business Affairs’, includes textual documents pertaining to several Insight productions.

The fourth series, ‘Development’, includes textual documents pertaining to several Insight productions.

The fifth series, ‘General’ includes correspondence, press clippings, and other textual records, related to general Insight company matters as well as specific Insight productions including Open Mike With Mike Bullard, Pumped, Quintuplets, Ready or Not, Stars on Ice, and Test Pattern. Sir Edmund Walker Papers

This collection includes 56 boxes and items. The documents consist of personal and business correspondence, articles and addresses, banking and legal documents, estate information, biography information, and other items. The correspondence relates to art and the National Gallery, De Grassi Point, geology, Japanese consul, The Champlain Society, the National Battlefields Commission, the Royal Colonial Institute, the Round Table, University College Alumnae Association Building Committee. There is a significant amount of correspondence from the Canadian Bank of Commerce, the University of Toronto, and the Royal Ontario Museum, and with many prominent individuals in Canada and worldwide as well as letters to Mary before and after they married and messages of condolence received by the family after the death of Sir Edmund Walker. Other documents in the collection relate to the Alexander, Buchan, and Morrow families; the Coronation of King George V and other special events; the Duke of Sutherland's Scheme (Imperial Colonization Corporation of Canada); the West Virginia Debt Settlement; and C. White Mortimer. The items are books, a lace handkerchief, a wooden drawer containing numerous calling cards, card index of pictures and art objects, a framed drawing of the coat of arms, Sir Edmund Walker's certificates and medal upon being admitted as a Knight of the Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem, pieces of the fireplace from Long Garth, a silver vase, a silver bowl, a china plate with Walker crest and logo, and a fishing rod and net.

Personal records of Michael Bliss, professor of history, consisting of correspondence, consulting and editorial work, manuscripts and publications, lecture notes and associated teaching files, addresses, references; 1,216 slides illustrating a wide variety of subjects in Canadian history; 93 slides illustrating the Montreal smallpox epidemic of 1885; photographs relating to themes in Canadian business and general history.

Barbarian Press Papers

This accession consists of the manuscripts, illustrations, page proof sheets, correspondence and other editorial material for Barbarian Press books released between 2002 and 2005, including: Endgrain Editions Three: Peter Lazarov (2002), John Keats’ Eve of Saint Agnes (2003), Hoi Barbaroi: A Quarter Century at Barbarian Press (2004), Emily: Opposites Attract (2004), Carlo Toselli’s What is Time? (2004) and John Loney’s Gallipoli (2005). It also contains material for smaller, miscellanous Barbarian Press projects, including catalogues, wedding invitations and broadsheets.

Alberto Manguel Papers

The 2006 accession complements the existing Alberto Manguel collections held at the Fisher Library. It consists primarily of original draft manuscripts, translations, galleys and page proofs for Manguel's recently published work, notably The Library at Night (published 2006), as well as for his commissioned articles, reviews and other projects for a variety of publications. (Many of these published articles are in the collection.) It also includes manuscript drafts for two as-yet unpublished novels in English, At The Mad Hatter's Table and The Book of Praise. Among the other published works represented in this collection are: The Reading Diary (US version, published in 2004); two Manguel-edited anthologies: THe Penguin Book of Christmas Stories (2005) and Memoria Para el Olvido: Los ensayos de Robert Louis Stevenson (2005); A Room Full of Toys (2006); and, The Secret Supper, authored in Spanish by Javier Sierra and translated by Manguel. It also includes material for the book series Manguel edits for the French published Actes Sud.

There is a small number of personal diaries and agendas in this collection, as well as correspondence, primarily related to his work. There are also large files of correspondence and other administrative records from his two primary agencies of the past 15 years, Lucina Vardey and Westwood Creative Artists, both based in Toronto.

Joe Rosenblatt Papers

This collection consists of manuscript drafts and other material related to various writing projects by poet and visual artist Joe Rosenblatt, including Parrot Fever (published by Exile Editions, 2002) as well as two as-yet unpublished works: Dog Poems, a collaboration with Vancouver-based poet Catherine Owen and photographer Karen Moe, and Hogg Variations / The Lunatic Muse, a collaboration with Barry Callaghan. The collection also contains a large volume of correspondence, primarily e-mail.

Trinidad Theatre Workshop Papers

2005 Accession: Includes papers reflecting the various activities of the Trinidad Theatre Workshop, 1990-2005, from performances and travel, to budgetary and financial information, correspondence, teaching, training and theatre education. The Trinidad Theatre Workshop was established in 1959 by Derek Walcott, with artistic direction by Albert Laveau.

2006 Accession: Includes material reflecting the various activities of the Trinidad Theatre Workshop, from scripts and correspondence to budget and financial material.
