There is a connection between these two aspects.

There are different perspectives on marriage for men and women. One problem is the romantic view of marriage feed to us from various sources which we absorb. Over idealizing marriage doesn't help at all.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: This morning I will offer some reflections on the current state of things, where we are today in terms of the ecumenical movement. We are at a significant moment in history, the end of the church's close identification with culture. That culture becomes more secularized, which means to lead its life without reference to God. The church is called to take a more counter-cultural prophetic stand.

Joe Egan, "Authority" (part 1) - August 22, 1988, A.M.

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at l'Arche Renewal retreat events from June 22 - August 23, 1988.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: I am happy to be here, even though I am the last speaker of the Renewal. The theme for our 2 days is authority. It is a fundamental reality in all of our lives and of our communities. We all had the experience of living under the authority of others, whether, parents, teachers, boss or society in general. Also, how do we best exercise authority in our communities of L'Arche? So how do we live well under authority of others and how do we exercise it well ourselves? What is the Christian vision of authority in the gospels?

Side A: Donald Nicholl, "Opening the Door" - June 25, 1992 ; Side B: Donald Nicholl, "God, the Universe, and Humankind" - June 26, 1992

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at l'Arche Renewal retreat events from June 25 - August 20, 1992, in England.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: Side One: What does "opening the door" mean I wondered when I got the program. I think of Pandora of Greek mythology. She had all the gifts, but was given a box which she must not open. But she does open it and out of it comes all the evils which afflict humanity ever since. Only one thing left in the box, a gift. That gift is hope! A similar story is Adam & Eve in the garden, where they must not eat from one tree. Side Two: I hope to propose a way to see the universe and our place in it which will enable us to launch our journey of renewal and discovery, growing ever deeper in hope while dealing with the risks too.

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at l'Arche Renewal retreat events from June 25 - August 20, 1992, in England.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: I hope that during this renewal each of us will discover how beautiful we are and how much we are loved by God. We have a mission to discover our beauty. Many people don't believe they are loved by God. Children know they are loved but then what happens? We must also discover our brokenness, that the outer world is also our inner world. The challenge is to accept it rather than just be angry with it. So sometimes we can deny our beauty and sometimes our brokenness. The secret for humans is the transformation of brokenness into trust.

Jean Vanier, "The Journey Inward, the Journey Outward. Who is My Enemy?" - July 9, 1992

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at l'Arche Renewal retreat events from June 25 - August 20, 1992, in England.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: The inward and outward journeys are fundamentally the same. We have to do both. To meet poverty outside of one self and to refuse to see our inner poverty is not possible. It's a question of walking into our own pain and into the pain outside. It's important that we do this somehow together. As we begin to see the pain on the outside we begin to see our helplessness, our frustration, our angers and fears--our inner pain. Do we deny our inner pain and then the outer too? Or as we accept the inner pain, do we begin to understand the outer pain?

Arthur Vincent, "Adolescence" - July 16, 1992

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at l'Arche Renewal retreat events from June 25 - August 20, 1992, in England.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: I want to talk to you about adolescence using Erikson's model of human development and growth. It's a good and helpful model, but not a perfect one.

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at l'Arche Renewal retreat events from June 22 - August 23, 1988.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: Just before coming here I visited the psychiatric hospital of Honduras. It's a terrible place as you can imagine. I went there to see Olga who is a friend of our community. She was rejected and abandoned and lived lots of years on the streets.

Rev. John Kavanaugh, S.J. "The Poverty of our Consumer Society" (part 2) - Friday, July 8, 1988, A.M.

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at l'Arche Renewal retreat events from June 22 - August 23, 1988.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: We long for love which is related to the issue of poverty. In a strange way poverty is at the heart of love if you look at its characteristics that St. Paul writes about. It's a tremendous unguardedness, It's a strange thing when you enter into the mystery of persons and of love. It's like a terrible act of disarmament. But our normal inclinations are all about protecting ourselves. Thus love inhabits this whole reality of poverty and wealth, of radial insecurity and security, It's paradoxical because love means being so unguarded yet also feeling so secure. I want to talk this morning about the paradoxes of poverty and how at issue is always the reality of love.

Dr. Colin Maloney, "Growing Up in a Modern Family" (part 1) - Tuesday, July 19, 1988, A.M.

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at l'Arche Renewal retreat events from June 22 - August 23, 1988.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: I have the "family" as a general area. I would like to begin with a few questions: 1) What is a family? What is happening to families in the world around us? 2) What happens in a family? 3) What is the negativity we find in some families today e.g. violence and dysfunction? 4) Also to reflect on L'Arche as a family. What does that mean? This is one topic you all have experience over many years. We are all experts. I would like to bring in your wisdom too.

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at l'Arche Renewal retreat events from June 22 - August 23, 1988.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: The subject I have taken is a difficult one and at the same time an important one. I will be entering into what is the meaning of our vocation as a man and a woman. Only later will I talk about differences. It's important to do this in the right spirit, which is prayer. To be grateful that God loves us and has called us as beloved sons and daughters. If you only believe more at the end that you are loved I would be happy with our time together.

Claire de Miribel, "Celibacy" - Wednesday, July 27, 1988, A.M.

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at l'Arche Renewal retreat events from June 22 - August 23, 1988.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: Each one of us has to discover our vocation and our name. We have two names. The first one is "beloved" and the second one is "giver of life." Our vocation is to love and be loved and to give life. We are blessed by God and called to be fruitful. Our vocation for each of us is a journey of love. For a majority this means marriage. But for some people the call is to celibacy. I would like to reflect with you today on "what is celibacy?" as a gift of God in a Christian perspective.

Sue Mosteller, "Making Choices" (part 2) - Friday, July 29, 1988, A.M.

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at l'Arche Renewal retreat events from June 22 - August 23, 1988.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: I want to talk about some myths and some truths today. Then try to put meaning on something we are talking about a lot which is life choice or vocation. And then the big questions about how to we live all of this??

Conference #9, August 17, 1984, 2:30 p.m.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: I want to talk about another meeting in the gospel of John between Jesus and another woman. The only thing that is important is that we meet Jesus and that we live that experience of a covenant with him.

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a l'Arche Renewal retreat in Spokane, WA, in 1983.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: I propose two parts for this morning: 1) I want to share with you about the people of Honduras and their reality, especially their suffering; 2) then I can share about the people in my community of L'Arche Honduras.

Nadine Tokar, "Cry of the Poor - Hondorus" #3

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a l'Arche Renewal retreat in Spokane, WA, in 1983.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: It's true that Central America is divided between rich and poor. And so is Honduras. It's really something to live with people for whom left/right or rich/poor means nothing. If I look at my own community I find that there are rich and poor there also. In helping Marcia to grow that I am growing too. So maybe a deep question is how to use my richness and power in a way of truth and justice.

Jean Vanier, "2. Stay"

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a l'Arche Renewal retreat in Spokane, WA, in 1983.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: We continue with these three words of Jesus: "Come, Stay, & Go". If he calls us to him and touches us in our secret name, where we are so little and vulnerable, so yearning to be loved and yet afraid we are not loved. So we fill up that empty space with things and hyper activity, But if we let ourselves be touched and Jesus fills up that empty space of our hearts, if we hear the call and respond to the call, it's so we can "stay" and make our abode in him.

Jean Vanier, "A Message of Hope"

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a l'Arche Renewal retreat in Spokane, WA, in 1983.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: Being here has been a gift to us who have come from our various communities for the summer renewal program. My theme tonight is Hope. I will share with you some of my latest journeys. Maybe it will help you to know how privileged you are and what your responsibility is.

Henri Nouwen, "Returning, The Disciplines of the Grateful Life" - Thursday, June 23, 1988, A.M.

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at l'Arche Renewal retreat events from June 22 - August 23, 1988.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: Just a few opening remarks. The two sons are both lost! That's important because there are only two sons. So the story is saying we are lost. And that is ok because God wants to find us and is looking for us. It's ok to say "I'm lost and ready to be found." It's not a question of feeling guilty but that I grow in my desire to be found. So that we can start owning our wounds, our brokenness. Not to beat ourselves over the head but as that which allows God to hold and love us as we are.

Sr. Margot Powers, "Poverty in our Society" - June 27, 1988, A.M.

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at l'Arche Renewal retreat events from June 22 - August 23, 1988.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: It is a privilege to be with you. I always have been searching for God and you have too. Now I find God in conflict, on the streets fighting for the poor. I have no qualifications to be here. I am only an old woman trying to do a bit of good, but because I am old, people paid attention!

Dr. Suzanne Parenteau, "BioEthics, Channels for Life" (part 1) - Wednesday, June 29, 1988, A.M.

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at l'Arche Renewal retreat events from June 22 - August 23, 1988.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: I finished my medical training 26 years ago. I was not interested in having a regular practice. I was more interested in health than sickness. I specialize in sharing knowledge with people so that they understand their bodies better and therefore able to take their own decisions.

Fr. Austin Smith, "Our Mission With the Poor"

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a l'Arche Renewal retreat in Scotland in 1986.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: My idea in my order was to change in some way our whole attitude in how we understand mission. This is of the essence and I hope will relate to your own lives in L'Arche. Before that, I would also like to look at the what is being called the theory of poverty. It's important to understand that when we do speak of poverty, we are speaking about not only what people have in life but also what are expectations that are presented within society.

Fr. Austin Smith, "Historical Jesus"

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a l'Arche Renewal retreat in Scotland in 1986.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: It's important to be grateful for everything we got, especially friends and those we live with and for the grace of being able to serve them, a wounded humanity, with romanticizing it. Be joyful in it and be grateful for our shared hope.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: Yesterday I emphasized the need for waiting, to enter into the experience of waiting in order to move from oppression to wholeness. Whether we are concerned about social justice or concerned about relating to a particular person in our community or concerned about really understanding ourselves, we have to enter that experience of waiting.

Br. Andrew, "Our Response to the Cry"

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a l'Arche Renewal retreat in Scotland in 1986.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: You have been listening to the cry of the poor for some days now. The cry of the poor most certainly comes to us and it's important to hear that cry. But we can't stop there with the cry of the poor because it's also a call. It's an invitation that requires a response. It's important that we find the correct response because all kinds of response are possible to the cry of the poor.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: When we look at the gospels one of the things that seems very clear is that God responds to our thirst. Let he who is thirsty, come to me to drink. Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a l'Arche Renewal retreat in Scotland in 1986.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: In this first part I am trying to give you a general background to my approach. In the second part I will give you stories of the people who came to my center. The general theme is the healing power of Christ. But the specific more precise question I will address is the psyche and soul of the therapist and priesthood. I am addressing the fundamental issue of what is the relationship between those aspects of being and becoming which we expect to be the domain of a therapist and those that are the concern of the priest because they are concerned with the soul.

Then I worked in a hospital in London where there were many handicapped children. Overtime I became committed to community based care for people. Today we take our many services to people at risk where they live to prevent as much as possible the possibility of people with handicaps being institutionalized
