Circus Barum: Diary, Notes

File consists of a hard bound red and black notebook with a handwritten label on the cover: "Circus Barum. Diary. Notes." This notebook contains a handwritten draft of the Circus Diary with editing notes by Nouwen. Notebook also contains notes about the Flying Rodleighs, likely taken by Nouwen while visiting the group. These notes include notes on the act, the program of the Circus Barum, and a summer schedule of the Circus Barum.

Back of the notebook contains notes on Steve Jenkinson, a therapy Exp. in Toronto, notes in Dutch with title "De Roep van de Armen" ["The Call of the Poor"], more notes on Steve Jenkinson, and a list of addresses under the heading "Prodigal Son Book" [likely people to whom Nouwen sent copies of The Return of the Prodigal Son]. A notebook page has also been tucked into the book with notes by Nouwen in French under the heading "Memoires de Leotard" [Memoirs of Leotard] - Paris (Chez tous les Libraires, 1860).

Circus decoupage

File consists of individual circus colour prints cut from a larger piece of paper, possibly wrapping paper, and glued to 8.5 x 11 sheets of white paper. File also includes a section of the larger paper the individual prints were taken from.

File consists of a typed draft of "Circus Diary: May 6th to 22nd, 1992." This draft is likely a later draft of Nouwen's Circus book, and features editing annotations (not by Nouwen).

File consists of a typescript of "Circus Diary May 6th to 22nd, 1992." This draft contains no editing annotations, but includes three copies of a postcard featuring The Flying Rodleighs: three men in the middle of an exchange on the trapeze. Printed on the back of the postcards: "Wereld Sterren Circus 1995/1996. The Flying Rodleighs, a new dimension in flying trapeze; spierkracht & elegance realiseren de droom van de 'vliegende mens'." [muscular strength & elegance to realize the dream of the 'flying man'].

Circus manuscript

File consists of typed drafts of chapters one and two of the Circus Diary manuscript. File includes pages of handwritten notes by Nouwen for the chapters and notes about the Flying Rodleighs.

Circus programmes

File consists of six circus programmes dating from about 1993 to 1996. Three of the programmes are in German, two from ‘Circus Barum’ (ca. 1993 and ca. 1996) and one from ‘Der Grosse Asiatiche Circus’ (ca. 1993), three programmes are in Dutch from ‘Kerstcircus Ahoy 1994/1995’, ‘Wereld Sterren Circus 1995/1996’ and 'Circus Carré 1995'.

Clergy Conference - October 21 - 23, 1980

File consists of correspondence, mainly from Stephen Bolle, and other material regarding Nouwen's leadership at the Diocese of New York's Fall 1980 Clergy Conference at the Graymoor Unity Center in Garrison, New York. The theme of the conference was "compassion." Nouwen gave a series of four presentations on compassion and a special presentation on van Gogh. File includes registration form, schedule and travel itinerary. Also includes a newspaper clipping on the event from the "Episcopal New Yorker" that makes reference to tapes that were made by Rev. Fred Cartier and available at the Christ Church Tape Ministry.

Clergy Conference Battle Creek - May 17-18, 1981

File consists of correspondence and other material regarding Nouwen's involvement in the 27th Annual Clergy Conference at the Veterans Administration Medical Center, Battle Creek, Michigan. Nouwen spoke on "Compassion" and "Patience".

Clergy Conference, Diocese of Ontario - February 17 - 19, 1991

File consists of correspondence and other material regarding Nouwen's leadership at the Clergy Conference for the Anglican Diocese of Ontario at Glen House Resort, Gananoque, Ontario. The theme of the conference was "Communion to Community: Communion and an Invitation to Ministry." Includes notes of a meeting planning for the conference, an agenda for the conference, and notes from the discussion with Nouwen on "Where do we go from here?" written by Jeff Boerger sent in a letter from David Robson. Also includes correspondence with Nouwen, regarding arrangements for the conference and thank-you letters. Includes correspondence with Allan Read, Bishop of Ontario. A copy of Nouwen response is included with most letters.

Cleveland Lectures - May 6-8, 1981

File consists of correspondence and other material regarding Nouwen's leadership in A Day of Celebration for the Catholic Diocese of Cleveland co-sponsored by the Office of Continuing Education of Priests and the Mullen Lecture Series. Also includes a program for "A Day of Celebration" and a TSF Bulletin, April 1982, with an article by Robert Durback entitled "Henri Nouwen: Spiritual Guide for a Church in Transition." The bulletin was sent by Robert Durback.

Collected circus articles

File consists of nine newspaper and magazine articles pertaining to the circus and the trapeze from a variety of Dutch, English and German newspapers dating from between 1991 and 1994. The magazine article, published in the New Yorker, April 20, 1992 was originally housed in a plastic folder with a sticker on the front stating 'Our far-flung correspondents' / "One-ring mud show" / From "The New Yorker" April 20, 1992.

Collected circus materials

File consists of a variety of materials related to the circus. Includes book lists in Dutch, sketches, a print price list, a copy of an excerpt from the book ‘A second birthday’ by William Stringfellow referring to the circus and a postcard picturing The Flying Rodleighs in action. The postcard is a promotion of the 1995/96 Wereld Sterren Circus. The file also consists of a long typed letter to The Flying Rodleighs from Nouwen dated May 14, 1991.

Collected class material - volume I

File consists of a bound volume of miscellaneous handouts. The materials were most likely bound between 1974 and 1976. Many of the materials appear to be original typed copies, indicating that they were the originals from which Nouwen created handouts for his students.
The bound volume contains a table of contents that lists sixteen articles. One of the articles is a typescript by Nouwen titled "Case-Recording in Pastoral Education". File also includes a loose copy of this typescript and it includes excerpts from Sir Frederick Treves "The Elephant Man", and "The Teachings of the Compassionate Buddha" edited by E.A. Burtt, and a final page titled "The Compassion of William Kurelek" by Frank Murphy, C.M. The remaining articles are:

Boisen's acute psychose in verband met zijn vraag naar de verhouding tussen geestesziekte en religieuze bekering [The significance of Anton T. Boisen's acute psychosis related to his question about the relationship between mental illness and religious conversion], as well as typed reading notes on Boisen and a document by Dr. J.J.G. Prick and Calon on intelligence and dementia. File includes a note from Prick regarding Jung. This note was possibly from a conversation or a class with Prick. Deals with a thesis proposal [dated 1951 but this cannot be correct Nouwen was in seminary at the time]. File also contains reading notes of "Een schets van intelligentie en dementie" by Prick and Calon, with notes of other books, dated February 8, 1971.

Commencement Sermon, Princeton Theological Seminary - June 2, 1981

File consists of correspondence and other material regarding Nouwen's involvement as speaker for the Princeton Theological Seminary Commencement, Princeton, New Jersey. The original typescript of the Commencement Sermon and a copy are included. There is reference to the speech being taped for the Speech Studio's library and also being published in The Bulletin, Princeton's newsletter. An outline of the sermon gives the title "Take you where you rather would not go." May be same or similar address given at Yale Divinity School's Baccalaureate service on May 23, 1981.

This includes a copy of the Boston Pilot with Nouwen's article: "Generation Without Fathers: Christian Leadership of Tomorrow" (Boston Pilot, Saturday August 22, 1970). File consists of a letter from Bill and Dini Geerts concerning a meeting of Community Christian Reformed Church of Richmond Hill at which Nouwen was to lead a devotion. This letter was sent to those invited and copied to Nouwen.

Companion (Br. Phil Kelly)

File consists of business correspondence concerning an interview between Nouwen and Mr. Phil Kelly which became a feature piece in the January 1990 Companion of Saint Francis and Saint Anthony magazine; business documents including a draft of the interview called: "Living the 'Second Loneliness' Henri J. Nouwen at Daybreak" as well as four Companion magazines from 1988 and 1989.

Compass

File consists of business correspondence concerning an article adapted from a talk about Adam Arnett and Daybreak that Nouwen gave at Redeemer College, Hamilton, in January 1989. The article was published in the September 1989 issue of the magazine Compass, a Jesuit Journal; business documents including several drafts as well as the edited version of the article.
