Covenant Retreats

Series consists of 248 audio cassettes made during Covenant Retreats. L’Arche recognized that the word “Covenant” is close to describing the spirituality of the organization; that God wanted to ‘make a covenant’, a bond and commitment to the people of Israel. For assistants that begin to see l’Arche as a vocation, and want to make a longer term commitment and see themselves being called to be at l’Arche by God, there are retreats that support them in that spirituality. These Covenant Retreats provide a space for those that have announced, or are considering, their Covenant and provide support for those Assistants. The Covenant Retreats happen about once a year in Europe and North America where most of the l’Arche communities are, and happen less frequently in India, Central America, South America, Africa, India, etc.

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at l'Arche Renewal retreat events from June 25 - August 20, 1992, in England.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: Yesterday we were looking at the two meanings of the word ecumenical. We looked at the complicated family tree of Christianity over 2000 years and at its many problems. One thing that has happened in the last 50 years or so is that all the different religions have come to be aware of one another and aware of living together on one small planet.

Donald Allchin, "Ecumenism Within a Christian Perspective" - August 18, 1992

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at l'Arche Renewal retreat events from June 25 - August 20, 1992, in England.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: We have two sessions on ecumenism. Ecumenism is a word that has more than one meaning and therefore there can be misunderstanding. In Europe is usually refers to the movement towards unity among Christian churches. In N.A. the word is taken in the wider sense to refer to the relationships between Christians and people of other religions, I'm going to talk about that second wider meaning.

Donald Allchin, "Glory to Glory - looking at l'Arche and Thomas Merton" - July 30, 1992

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at l'Arche Renewal retreat events from June 25 - August 20, 1992, in England.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: I want to talk about L'Arche which is an unwise thing to do because I don't live it. So you can tell me if I have it all wrong or whatever you like. I want to start with our understanding of human development from the standpoint of our Christian faith. Some elements of our human development relate directly to our faith in God. Human life begins in God and is sustained by God's grace and love. And it will end in God. Now what is the particular gift of L'Arche in all of this?

Donald Allchin, Gospel Meditation: "Ecumenism" - July 22, 1992 ; "Julian of Norwich" - July 23, 1992 ; "St. Paul 2: Corinthians 4: 5-15" - July 28, 1992 ; "2: Corinthians 4: 16 - 5: 5"

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: We will begin with John:17 which is the inspiration of the whole movement towards Christian unity in this century. It is a prayer of self consecration and an intercession together.

Donald Allchin, Gospel Meditation: "Romans 8: 11-17" - July 14, 1992 ; "Abba, Romans 8: 19-23" - July 15, 1992 ; "Romans" - July 16, 1992 ; "Julian of Norwich" - July 21, 1992

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: We are looking today at St. Paul's letter to the Romans, which is about many things but especially about the freedom in the spirit which liberates us and enables us to grow.

Donald Nicholl, "Man / Woman" - July 20, 1992

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at l'Arche Renewal retreat events from June 25 - August 20, 1992, in England.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: Today I want to remind ourselves in talking about man & woman we are not trying to draw up a papal encyclical. What we are trying to do is a very practical thing, i.e. it is to discern the process which we all have to undergo, taking a lifetime, to become a whole person.

Dorothy Watson, "Loss and Bereavement and First Relaxation Exercise" - July 28, 1992

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at l'Arche Renewal retreat events from June 25 - August 20, 1992, in England.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: Let's start with a guided relaxation session ( which takes several minutes on the tape, including introductions too). The context today is loss and bereavement. There are lots of losses in our lives, whether recent or past ones. Good to look at them again because now I am stronger and can face the pain which I had to push into my unconscious. In fact we live more out of our unconscious than our conscious awareness.

Dr. Colin Maloney, "Growing Up in a Modern Family" (part 1) - Tuesday, July 19, 1988, A.M.

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at l'Arche Renewal retreat events from June 22 - August 23, 1988.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: I have the "family" as a general area. I would like to begin with a few questions: 1) What is a family? What is happening to families in the world around us? 2) What happens in a family? 3) What is the negativity we find in some families today e.g. violence and dysfunction? 4) Also to reflect on L'Arche as a family. What does that mean? This is one topic you all have experience over many years. We are all experts. I would like to bring in your wisdom too.

Dr. Mount, "Personal Encounter with Loss and Death" (part 1) - Monday, July 25, 1988, A.M.

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at l'Arche Renewal retreat events from June 22 - August 23, 1988.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: Thank for the opportunity to be with your community and for your hospitality. I did my training many years ago as a surgeon. Then in the 70's did a study which looked at how people died at our hospital in Montreal. We basically found that people died badly! And 80% of us will die in institutions. I was shocked. That kindled my interest in why that happened and what could we do about it. I would like to start with my basic thesis which is that loss and bereavement happen to us all the time.

Dr. Mount, "Personal Encounter with Loss and Death" (part 2) - Monday, July 25, 1988, A.M.

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at l'Arche Renewal retreat events from June 22 - August 23, 1988.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: Many things have moulded our perception of death as a society and underpin how we react to loss. Next we will look at grief and look at my lay perspective on a Christian response to suffering and death. There's a lot you can do during an illness that can prepare the people left behind. It's been said that only people who have avoided love can avoid grief. The point is to learn from grief and remain vulnerable to love. We all experience loss. It's been shown clearly that no matter what kind of loss it is, our reaction is essentially similar.

Dr. Mount, "Personal Encounter with Loss and Death" (part 3) - Monday, July 25, 1988, P.M.

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at l'Arche Renewal retreat events from June 22 - August 23, 1988.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: I would like to make a few observations about suffering. 1) Suffering can certainly be a stumbling block to faith, especially innocent suffering. We bring many factors to our experience of grief and one of them is our faith. 2) Whatever our suffering, it may be the point when we experience our essential aloneness clearly. 3) There is the paradox that suffering can be a doorway and stimulus into a new integration and spiritual growth.

Dr. Sheila Hollins, "The needs of the handicapped persons"

Item consists of 1 audio cassette from the 1987 International Federation of l'Arche meeting in Rome.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: When I was a doctor working in London I realized I needed to know more about human relationships because I had a family practice. So I started training in psychiatry. My second son had special needs but no one seemed to understand all the feelings around our reality which we were experiencing as a family. Now I teach the future doctors about the needs of people with handicaps and their families.

Dr. Suzanne Parenteau, "BioEthics, Channels for Life" (part 1) - Wednesday, June 29, 1988, A.M.

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at l'Arche Renewal retreat events from June 22 - August 23, 1988.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: I finished my medical training 26 years ago. I was not interested in having a regular practice. I was more interested in health than sickness. I specialize in sharing knowledge with people so that they understand their bodies better and therefore able to take their own decisions.

Dr. Suzanne Parenteau, "BioEthics, Channels for Life" (part 2) - Wednesday, June 29, 1988, A.M.

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at l'Arche Renewal retreat events from June 22 - August 23, 1988.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: The basic human question is "when are we a person?" This comes up when we talk about abortion. What is a human being and when do we start? We are very close to be able to genetically manipulate things. Shouldn't we discuss this as a society before it happens. There are many values underneath these questions.

Dr. Tom West, "Caring for the Dying"

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a Renewal Retreat in 1979. The title of the retreat was "Unless a Man Be Born Again."

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: I hope to talk to illustrate my slides. The goal is to get your eyes off of me and onto the dying patients we are talking about , with their families and the staff who surround them. I am happy to share what I know based on our experience at St. Christopher's.
