Sir Edmund Walker Papers

Collection consists of correspondence, drafts of speeches and writings, journals, scrapbooks, photographs, clippings and family papers.

Sir Edmund Walker Papers

This collection includes 56 boxes and items. The documents consist of personal and business correspondence, articles and addresses, banking and legal documents, estate information, biography information, and other items. The correspondence relates to art and the National Gallery, De Grassi Point, geology, Japanese consul, The Champlain Society, the National Battlefields Commission, the Royal Colonial Institute, the Round Table, University College Alumnae Association Building Committee. There is a significant amount of correspondence from the Canadian Bank of Commerce, the University of Toronto, and the Royal Ontario Museum, and with many prominent individuals in Canada and worldwide as well as letters to Mary before and after they married and messages of condolence received by the family after the death of Sir Edmund Walker. Other documents in the collection relate to the Alexander, Buchan, and Morrow families; the Coronation of King George V and other special events; the Duke of Sutherland's Scheme (Imperial Colonization Corporation of Canada); the West Virginia Debt Settlement; and C. White Mortimer. The items are books, a lace handkerchief, a wooden drawer containing numerous calling cards, card index of pictures and art objects, a framed drawing of the coat of arms, Sir Edmund Walker's certificates and medal upon being admitted as a Knight of the Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem, pieces of the fireplace from Long Garth, a silver vase, a silver bowl, a china plate with Walker crest and logo, and a fishing rod and net.

Also includes documents from the governing of the Estate after Allan MacNab’s death. This includes papers from MacNab’s sister-in-law and executor, Sophia Stuart MacNab, as well papers from her successors, Mary Stuart Daly and Caroline Daly. These records pertain to the maintenance of the estate, information on the mortgages owned by the estate and lawsuits.

“Signal log for the Great Eastern during the cable laying and recovery of Atlantic cables 1866-65” [Signals here are between the Great Eastern and the “Terrible”, “Racoon”, “Medway”, and “Albany” [...] the messages comprise S.S. Great Eastern July 13, 1866 – Sept. 8, 1866 Telegraphs Telegraph Collection a narrative of the laying of the cable. Minor incidents are recorded here such as on July 17 “warning bell touched by accident” and the following day “cables are entangled in tank”. The cables become much more detailed toward the end of July and the second part of this signal journal describes the successful attempt to refind the 1865 cable repair it and complete its connection with Newfoundland.]

Shyam Selvadurai Papers

Collection contains professional and personal papers pertaining to the life and career of Shyam Selvadurai. These papers contain extensive material on the novels of Selvadurai. This includes prolific drafts, most with holograph revisions, proofs and promotional material for all four of his novels. The collection also contains extensive research that was conducted by Selvadurai for Funny Boy and Cinnamon Gardens. Material also relates to two unpublished novels: one tracing the lives of the characters from Swimming in the Monsoon Sea as adults and living in Canada, and the other – The Vanishing Relics, which Selvadurai wrote during the course of his MFA in 2010.

Also included in the collection are drafts and published articles and stories, which appeared in journals, newspapers and magazines, as well as additions to anthologies which were edited by Selvadurai. Records relate to promotion and career of Selvadurai including articles and interviews, author photographs, readings and events. Collection also pertains to the personal life of Selvadurai with correspondence (primarily between 1985 and 2005), photographs and personal items. Other personal material relates to his education in Sri Lanka and Canada and theatre productions directed by Selvadurai as a young adult in Sri Lanka.

Scrapbook of North American Fire Reports

The collection consists of a disassembled scrapbook of insurance underwriters' reports and records, fire reports, original news clippings and photographs, and other miscellaneous material on various North American conflagrations between 1904 and 1918. Of particular local interest are the pages (five in total) devoted to the Toronto fire of 1904. Among the other major North American fires represented in the scrapbook include those in the cities of Baltimore, Rochester, Halifax, Indianapolis, New Orleans, Three Rivers (Que.), Salem (Mass.), Campbelltown (NB), Houston and Atlanta, among others. The scrapbook appears to have been assembled by an underwriter from the firm of Royal Insurance Company of Liverpool.

The collection consists of typed transcripts from printed texts, private papers, notes, interviews and photographs and post cards that give the social history of the Lake of Bays area. During the late 19th and early 20 centuries, the area was largely inhabited by those who worked in the lumber industry. With the arrival of summer cottagers at the beginning of the 20th century, the economy improved. The Martin papers describe this period.

A collection of Russell Brown's literary papers, and his editorial and correspondence files from his tenure as editor at 'Lakehead University Review' (1972-1975), 'Descant' (1979-1983), as joint editor of 'An Anthology of Canadian Literature in English' (1982-1983), and poetry editor at McClelland and Stewart (1983-1988). Brown edited about thirty books of poetry, including works by Roo Borson, Lorna Crozier, Mary di Michele, Ralph Gustafson, Irving Layton, Douglas LePan, Susan Musgrave and Al Purdy. Some manuscripts are included with the correspondence. Manuscripts for which the authors sought Brown's editorial and critical suggestions may contain lengthy comments which, in many cases, resulted in the works being revised and later published.

Collection consists of material collected during the course of Dr. Frankford’s career as a doctor, health care activist and Member of Provincial Parliament. This includes reports, correspondence and clippings on primary health care, health service organizations, community health centres and material related to access to health care for marginalized groups. There are also copies of Dr. Frankford’s writing for newspapers and scientific and medical journals, as well as clippings on his work as an activist and other clippings of interest. Papers also relate to Dr. Frankford’s work regarding sickle cell anemia, and his participation in the Ontario Medical Association. His political papers includes speeches, presentations, reports and material generated during the course of his campaigns. The papers contain a small amount of personal material, especially regarding tributes made after his death.

Ronald Hambleton Papers

This collection consists of various projects – some completed, others unfinished and abandoned – from freelance writer Ronald Hambleton. It includes some older material, including interview transcriptions from his broadcast work for the BBC and CBC from the 1940s and 1950s and some original holograph drafts of his poetry, along with more recent work, including an unpublished novel entitled Private Performances and some children’s stories.

This collection complements and builds upon the previous accession of Ronald Bryden’s papers (see Collection 00461). It consists primarily of correspondence sent to Bryden. The correspondents are varied, and include such theatre luminaries as Keith Baxter, Alec Guinness, Terry Hands, Anthony Hopkins, Ian McKellen, Lawrence Olivier, Trevor Nunn and Michael Redgrave. Among the literary correspondents include Robertson Davies, Graham Greene, William Golding, Brian Moore, W. Somerset Maugham, Harold Pinter, Mordecai Richler, Tom Stoppard, Guy Vanderhaeghe and Derek Walcott.

This collection consists of the papers of Ronald Bryden and cover a wide range of his professional life: from early scripts co-written by Bryden when he was an undergraduate student at Trinity College, University of Toronto, in the 1940s, through to his published work when he was a journalist and critic in London during the 1960s and early 1970s, and up through the period when he was director of the Graduate Centre for Study of Drama at the University of Toronto. The collection also contains some of Bryden’s original research on the history of theatre, as well as journals that detail the productions he viewed in London, Toronto, Stratford, Ont., and Niagara-on-the-Lake (Shaw Festival).

The Kaliuzhnyi Papers focus on the life and activities of participants of one of the Ukrainian nationalist movements, the United Hetman Organization [Soiuz hetmantsiv derzhavnykiv], during the 1940s to 1950s. During this period the hetmanite movement was under the leadership of Danylo Skoropadskyi, who assumed the role in 1948 and served until his death in 1957. Rodion Kaliuzhnyi served as his secretary and after Skoropadskyi's death continued to be active in the movement. The collection also includes material on the activites of the Association of Ukrainian Women in Great Britain, as well as other Ukrainian emigre organizations such as the Association of Ukrainians in Great Britain, the Ukrainian Catholic Women's Organization in Germany, and several publishing houses. Other aspects of Ukrainian emigre life are documented by photographs of the Ukrainian community in the displaced persons camps in Mittenwald and Aschaffenburg, Germany from 1946 to 1949.
