Forster, Donald Frederick
Records documenting the activites of Milton Brown as professor in the Department of Hygiene and Preventive Medicine and head (1956-1967) of the Department of Public Health. There are extensive files on administrative matters and courses; on courses given at the Canadian Civil Defence College; on research relating to tuberculosis, other communicable diseases, and the development of vaccines; and on committees, especially those that Brown chaired, such as the Panel on Infection and Immunity of the Defence Research Board and the Committee on Accident Prevention of the Canadian Public Health Association. Some of Dr. Brown's files incorporate material produced by Donald Fraser, and there are also some of the latter's files.
Included is correspondence, memoranda and notes, financial records, grant applications, lecture notes, minutes, reports, addresses, manuscripts, publications and photoprints.

This accession contains mainly correspondence, photographs, memorabilia and diplomas from all three members of the family. Of particular note are the diaries of Sir J.C. McLennan for the last two years of his life as well as well as geological field notebooks and expense books.

Research Society for Victorian Periodicals
Fonds consists of material documenting the professional and personal life of Prof. Tuppil Venkatacharya. Records cover his collection and research of Sanskrit literature through correspondence, typescripts, annotated texts, translations and transliterations, and recordings of some of his academic presentations. Also included in the material is documentation of the community Sanskrit classes taught by the scholar (Series 10) as well as his and his wife’s, Vijaya Venkatacharya’s, involvement in Toronto’s South Asian community. Fonds also includes family correspondence and some biographical material regarding Venkatacharya’s education and positions held at the University of Toronto and other institutions. Contains the only known records of Captain Fritz Hauch Eden Crowe. The collection comprises of two leaves from a scrapbook, which has pasted-in watercolours and clippings, as well as three singular watercolours and one pencil drawing. These eleven watercolours and two pencil drawings were made during the course of his travels as a British naval officer and Consul-General to Portuguese East Africa at the following locations: Bahia Blanca (Argentina), Chupat, Patagonia (Argentina), Colonia, Rio Plata (Uruguay), Santa Catarina and Anhatomirim Island (Brazil), Simambaya Island (off the coast of Lamu, Kenya), Cape Verde (off the Senegalese coast), Egypt and Ascension Island (South Atlantic Ocean, 1600 km from the coast of Africa). Collected clippings demonstrate Crowe’s interest in naval history and exploration. Crowe’s papers also contain personal correspondence, notably three letters written to his mother (1863, 1872, 1878), and one to his grandfather as a 14 year old naval cadet. Correspondence and documentation also relates to his career as a naval officer and consul-general including a commission document, a letter of introduction and a letter from Crowe requesting retirement. The collected papers comprises some estate documents, such as an original codicil to Crowe’s will, which makes arrangements for his young daughter, as well as documents outlining the distribution of inheritance from his Uncle and his parents.
Crowe, Fritz Hauch Eden
The Massey Family records consist primarily of official and personal documents created by Vincent Massey. They reflect his distinguished diplomatic career, including his terms as Canadian ambassador to the United States during the 1920s and as High Commissioner to London during the 1930s and 1940s, along with his lengthy affiliation with the Liberal Party of Canada. Also represented are his years as Governor-General of Canada and as the leader of the Royal Commission on National Development in the Arts, Sciences and Letters. The moral and financial support given by Vincent and Alice Massey to cultural development in Canada, both individually and through the Massey Foundation, is evident in a wealth of documents relating to the fields of education, music, drama and fine arts (including such institutions and organizations as the National Council of Education, Hart House Quartet, Hart House Theatre, the Dominion Drama Festival, and the National Art Gallery). Their support of the University of Toronto is also well documented. In addition to the records of Vincent Massey, some papers of Alice Massey and correspondence of many members of the Grant, Massey and Parkin families are present.
The bulk of the records are found in B1987-0082. There are two other related accessions:
Contains the personal archives of Lester Douglas of four artists: Earl Horter, Hans Foy, David Karfunkle and Barbara Shermund. Douglas was acquainted with these artists through his role as the Director of Art and Printing for the Chamber of Commerce of the United States and through his work as a typographer and book designer. These collections include original artworks from all four artists, including drawings, paintings, etchings and engravings, some of them inscribed with dedications to Douglas. Apart from Horter, the artworks are contained in portfolios created by Douglas. Also included is correspondence from Horter and Foy to Douglas, as well as some ephemera, such as newspaper clippings and exhibition pamphlets for Horter, Foy and Karfunkle.

The Marjorie Lamb/ Alert Service fonds is primarily comprised of the research and publishing files of Marjorie Lamb in her capacity as a public speaker and the author of the Alert Service newsletter. The newsletter, which she published in the 1950s and 1960s sought to expose and counteract Communist activities in Canada. Her files extensively document the labour movement, Cold War political issues at the municipal, provincial and federal levels, and radical social movements in Toronto and across Canada. Implicit throughout the records are the issues of domestic espionage and propaganda.

The collection consists of: papers from director André Antoine; letters from Antoine; letters to Antoine from various playwrights, whose plays he staged; photographs of actors and actresses; letters from various members of Antoine's family; 40 autograph letters from Emile Zola; letters from and to journalist Léon Deffoux; letters from and to Maurice LeBlond, Emile Zola's son-in-law; letters from and to playwright Georges Ancey and his wife; several first editions of Zola's novels, some with bound autograph letters. Throughout are photocopied documents, collected by Sanders, as contexual material about the era and referenced events or articles within the correspondence. Also included are original letters sent to Sanders from the friends and relatives of those whose letters appear in the 19th century correspondence.

Personal records of Helen J. Breslauer, consisting primarily of a study of which she was a principal investigator along with Professor Howard Andrews, “Co-operative housing: a case study of decision-making in design and user satisfaction” (1968-1975). This fonds also includes files relating broadly to the development of an urban studies programme at Erindale College, with particular emphasis on course CGR/SOC 340E: “Concepts, methods, and values in urban studies” (1972-1976).
Seven of the eight series in this fonds deal with the Co-operative housing case study and are arranged according to the areas of research mapped out in the interim reports [see Series 7]. In addition there is an administrative series and a reports series which provide an overview of the research methodology, findings and administration of the research project.

Records documenting the career of Dr. H. Leverne Williams as a chemical engineer and distinguished polymer scientist. Includes papers, articles, addresses, reviews, correspondence, manuscripts, association files, lectures, reports, certificates and photographs. Records cover both his research at Polymer Corporation (Sarnia, Ont.) 1946-1967 and his work as a faculty member of the Department of Chemical Engineering 1967-82, as well as Professor Emeritus from 1982 until his death in 1994.

Williams, Harry Leverne
Records documenting Professor Acland’s research, publication and teaching activities. Includes notebooks, scripts and draft papers, photographs, slides, and negatives. The fonds is dominated by over 4000 prints and negatives documenting his research interest in and publication of his book The Gothic Vault and the book Building by the Sea written with Eric Arthur on the study of maritime architecture on Canada’s east coast. Also included are numerous prints of Toronto where Acland was active in the preservation of historic buildings such as Old City Hall.
This accession documents to a limited degree James Acland’s research, teaching and publications. It is limited because very little of his textual records survived, although there is a good number of notebooks that were mostly likely used for lectures. Records relating to his architectural conservation work especially relating to saving Old City Hall are held at the City of Toronto Archives.
This accession does however give a good representation of Acland’s photographic work that formed the basis of his research and publications. There are extensive photographs and negatives relating to The Gothic Vault as well as Building by the Sea. There is a large collection of photographs taken on a trip to Europe in 1964. These would have most certainly been used for research and teaching. All the images in this collection are well identified in terms of their location and site. However, few give specific dates. It is assumed that most of the images were taken through the 1960s and some in the early 1970s.
Sometime after his death, a collection of 25,000 slides was donated to the University of Toronto and was distributed among 15 departments. A catalogue of these slides was prepared by the Centre for Medieval Studies and published in 1984: Catalogue of the James Acland Slide Collection. Only a few slides were donated with this accession and it is possible they are duplicates of what is found in the larger collection.

This fonds consists of one accession documenting Dr. Fred Baker’s association with the University of Toronto mainly during his period as Director of the Sioux Lookout Program (SLP). The accession is arranged into seven series. Series 1 summarizes his career in curriculum vitae, and his appointment to the University and the Sioux Lookout Program. Series 2 to Series 4 contain Dr. Baker’s personal files relating to his role as director of SLP and includes some lectures and workshop files, as well as correspondence relating to native health care. Series 5 documents primarily his committee activities with the Canadian Paediatric Society and the Council of Faculties of Medicine of Ontario. Series 6 contains Dr. Baker’s copies of two reports relating to native health.

Baker, Frederick William
This fonds consists of three accessions containing correspondence, notes, diaries, certificates and diplomas, manuscripts and copies of printed articles, lecture notes, and photographs documenting Prof. E.K. Brown's career as professor of English literature at the University of Toronto, University of Manitoba and University of Chicago. Also includes correspondence to his widow, Margaret Brown (1953-1988), artifacts such as his doctoral cap, Governor-General Literary award of 1944 and Lorne Pierce Medal awarded to him posthumously by the Royal Society of Canada.

Personal records of Anatol Rapoport, multi-lingual musician, mathematician, and psychologist, a pioneer and lead-figure of the systems sciences, studies in conflict and co-operation, and peace research, author of approximately 500 publications, and professor emeritus of psychology and mathematics at the University of Toronto. The files consist of correspondence, manuscripts, reports, minutes of meetings, university teaching and administrative files, and photographs that document his life and career, principally at the University of Chicago, the University of Michigan, the University of Toronto and the Institut für höhere Studien in Vienna.
Fonds consists of eleven series documenting in varying degrees the personal, professional and academic activities of Dr. Andrew James Rhodes, professor of microbiology and former Director, University of Toronto School of Hygiene. While there is some documentation relating to his life prior to and during his appointment as Director, University of Toronto School of Hygiene, the bulk of the records in this accession document his activities and employment after 1970. Series 6 and 9 document his employment with the Ontario provincial government, first as Medical Director, Laboratory Services Branch, Ministry of Health ( 1970-1977) and then as Chairman of the Rabies Advisory Committee, Ministry of Natural Resources (1979-1988). While he was employed outside the University of Toronto for nearly twenty years, he continued his teaching responsibilities and occasionally undertook special projects such as the University Teaching Hospitals survey (Series 8) and the U. of T. Biosafety Committee (Series 7).
While Dr. Rhodes was well known for his scholarly publications on bacteriology and virology, manuscripts of these publications are not contained in this accession . However, Series 11 does contain records for Within Reach of Everyone. A history of the University of Toronto School of Hygiene and the Connaught Laboratories which he co-authored with Dr. Paul Bator. Two volumes of this history were published in 1990 and 1995 respectively. Correspondence, research materials, and page proofs for Volume 1 predominate, within only a few files regarding plans for Volume 2.
 In 1940 Dr. Rhodes, with Dr. C.E. van Rooyen published Virus Diseases of Man. In 1949, they again collaborated on Textbook of virology for students and practicioners of medicine and other health sciences. This book which was produced in 5 editions over the next few years established the University of Toronto School of Hygiene as the centre for medical virology in the world.
Rhodes, Andrew James
This fonds consists of one accession documenting three generations of the McCarthy family of Toronto. The majority of records document two graduates of the University of Toronto, Douglas Findlay McCarthy (B.A.Sc, 1929) and his son, Douglas Dale McCarthy (M.D. 1955). Sous fonds 1 consists of personal records of Douglas Findlay McCarthy documenting primarily his years as an engineering student during the mid 1920s at the University of Toronto. Personal diaries cover his education not only for these four years (1924-1929) but also some of his high school years at Malvern Collegiate. Also included are photographs of his team sports in water polo and basketball as well as graduation, and sports artifacts such as two trophies for bowling and rugby. Among the materials in Series 1 are the only documents relating to his father: two engineer’s booklets signed “Geo. A. McCarthy, Moncton, N.B.” and dated 1893.
Sous fonds 2 contains records relating to his son, Dale McCarthy during his time as a medical student in medicine in 1955 and relating to his medical career in the 1960s. However among these materials are some medical prescriptions believed to belong to his maternal grandfather, A.W. Moffatt for the 19th century as well as a Marey Sphygmograph used for measuring blood pressure during the same time period. Unfortunately, there is no documentation regarding his years with the Department of Medicine at the University of Toronto, or his involvement with the Ontario March of Dimes in Northern Ontario.
