Ground Zero chaplains initiative

File consists of material related to the initiative of the Henri Nouwen Society in 2002 to distribute Henri Nouwen's books in gratitude to chaplains at Ground Zero, the World Trade Center site, as "bringing Henri's work to today's 'Wounded Healers'". File includes correspondence, articles, and cards from and related to those involved with the Ground Zero Chaplain at St. Paul's Chapel.

Minister studies his priest-friend

File consists of a photocopy of an article by Kate Blain regarding Rev. Phillip Grigsby's research into the life and work of Nouwen and his aim to develop a curriculum for congregations to study Nouwen's theology. File also includes six pages of Grigsby's guide to accompany Nouwen's writing on solitude, community and ministry. The guide includes discussion questions based on numerous quotations from Nouwen's writing. The article was published in The Evangelist.

Silent serenity contains the answer to our spiritual questions

File consists of an article by Jan Jarboe Russell. Russell writes about pedophilia and the Catholic Church, specifically the Church's practice of linking homosexuality with pedophilia. She uses insights gleaned from her personal experience of Nouwen as a teacher to argue that at the root of problem is not homosexuality but leaders of the church who are not practicing "active listening" and other aspects of contemplative Christianity. Article was published in the San Antonio Express-News.

Farewell to center founder McNeill

File consists of an article announcing McNeill's retirement from his position as executive director for the Center of Social Concerns. It describes his future plans, as well as his accomplishments at the center and his professional life. McNeill cites Nouwen as one of three priests who kept him on track. The two remained friends and collaborators for life. Nouwen told McNeil, "You're much more spiritual than you think".

Sprouting Seeds newsletters

File consists of the official newsletter of the Henri Nouwen Literary Centre, which was published annually. According to the February 2002 edition, the HNLC decided to discontinue publishing the newsletter and to use its web site as the primary means of distributing information about the HNLC and its activities. File includes 3.5" diskette of electronic files for the Autumn 1998 newsletter.

Sharp, Jeff, PhD

File consists of correspondence between Mary Lou Daquano and Jeff Sharpe regarding an essay he wrote about Henri Nouwen titled “Jewels Among the Ashes: Wisdom Gleaned Through Work with a Mentor”. Included is a copy of the essay annotated by [Sue Mosteller?] and notes about her thoughts for use in a response to Sharp.

The only necessary thing: living a prayerful life

File consists of materials regarding "The Only Necessary Thing: Living a Prayerful Life", a book of prayers and talks written by Nouwen that was edited and compiled by Wendy Greer. File includes cards, new publications newsletters, gift guides, correspondence, contracts, agreements, and a copy of the foreword of the book by Sue Mosteller.

Even after his death, a priest stirs many denominations

File consists of a photocopy of a newspaper article by Jim Remsen about Nouwen and the work being carried out by Wendy Greer, Carl MacMillan and others to further his legacy.     This footage has been transferred from the "McLuhan Project." Chapter one (from Tape #1) begins with exterior (EXT) footage of the McLuhan residence at 3 Wychwood Park. Most of this footage was recut into "Marshall McLuhan's ABC" (TVO, 2002).

Letters from Paul Persson

File consists of two letters between Henri Nouwen and Paul Persson. Persson collected this material as a result of his personal interest in Henri Nouwen and his interest in having Nouwen visit his organization in England.

Letters from Patricia Ostrander, OSB

File consists of correspondence from Nouwen to Sister Patricia (Connie) Ostrander from 1984 to 1988, inscribed typescripts by Nouwen, and a reflection paper on Nouwen. Nouwen met Ostrander when he stayed at the St. Bede Monastery in Wisconsin for a month when Ostrander was Prioress of the community. Correspondence is handwritten and typed consisting of 2 letters, 1 card, and 4 postcards. File includes 7 article drafts including two that were published posthumously in "Road to Peace" and a theology student's letter to Henri Nouwen by Donna Vande Kieft from 2001. Material from the Center for Social Concerns

File consists of an issue of a newsletter by the Centre for Social Concerns dedicated in memory of Nouwen's gifts shared with God, the world, family and friends and the Notre Dame Community. The newsletter contains photographs and the following Nouwen related pieces: Special Letter from the Executive Director [Don McNeill, CSC], Henri Nouwen Memorial Endowment Fund, Fr. Henri Nouwen's Homily in Sacred Heart Church, 1983, "What makes you human is your heart", excepts from Nouwen's writing and talks. The newsletter was published in News and Reflections from the Centre XII, no. 1 (Fall Winter 1996): 1-6.

Nouwen Foundation

File consists of correspondence between Mary Lou Daquano, Sue Mosteller, Jeff Imbach and various other individuals regarding a gathering of Henri Nouwen’s friends January 12-14, 2001 to discuss how to more broadly share the Nouwen’s spirituality in Canada and the possible establishment of a Henri Nouwen Society in Canada. Pearce, Simon (glass cup)

File consists of correspondence between Mary Lou Daquano and Peter Konetschny regarding the glass cup Nouwen used while at L’Arche Daybreak that is referenced in his book Can You Drink the Cup? Included is a request to the cup’s designer, Simon Pearce, to forward a catalogue to Konetschny; a copy of a photo in which the glass appears, taken at the opening of the Nouwen Archives; original correspondence regarding the order of two glass cups and host plates; shipping invoices; personal cards from Pearce to Nouwen; and pages torn from an issue of Touring featuring Pearce’s work.

File consists of correspondence regarding the use of Henri Nouwen’s work and the process for granting associated permissions. Included is a form letter drafted by legal counsel Monique Van Remortel for use by Sue Mosteller when contacting publishers to determine if she, as Literary Executrix, can grant permission to use Nouwen’s work; requests from various contacts regarding permission to reprint Nouwen’s work; an overview of the Henri J.M. Nouwen Award created by the Religion Division of the American Association on Mental Retardation; requests made by the Henri Nouwen Literacy Centre for use on their website; and copies of some of the requested material by or about Nouwen.

Sue's travels

File consists of schedules for Sue Mosteller during a trip to Europe in October; a visit to L’Arche U.S. Region Gathering; and her attendance at Project Faith 2001.

Life of silence: Merton and Nouwen as brothers

File consists of a transcript of a paper given by Michael J. Christensen at a Nouwen event in New York. In this paper, Christensen compares the models of Christian spirituality presented by Thomas Merton and Nouwen. He views Merton as the older brother and Nouwen as the younger brother in the parable of two sons struggling to find their spiritual home. The paper was presented by Christensen at talk given on January 27, 2001 that was sponsored by the Center for Spiritual Development of the Archdiocese of New York, Corpus Christi Church, and the Henri Nouwen Society.

Henri Nouwen's passion and spirituality

File consists of a video tape of a panel discussion and video clips on Nouwen to mark the occasion of the 5th anniversary of his death by the Notre Dame Center for Social Concerns. Panelists include: Don McNeill, Sue Mosteller, Andrea Smith Sharpell and Claude Pomerleau. The video discussed the theme of Taken, Blessed, Broken, Given as expressed by Nouwen in Life of the Beloved and in his appearance on the Hour of Power, Chrystal Cathedrals. Each panelist discusses one aspect of the theme.

  • Taken (or chosen) - claiming our own choseness, and thereby seeing the chosenness of others
  • Blessed - the Christian call is to say good things to people about their belovedness, to bless and be blessed.
  • Broken - to befriend our brokenness, to put the brokenness under the blessing; suffering as a pruning
  • Given - to become fruitful as a result of knowing our belovedness.

Second file folder consists of correspondence and reference material regarding the development and publication of Beth Porter’s anthology Befriending Life: Encounters with Henri Nouwen. Included are copies of letters from Porter and Sue Mosteller inviting people to contribute essays for use in Befriending Life; a letter and potential cover art from Linda Punch at Counterpunch; a letter from Health Communications Inc. declining to publish the book; photocopies of photos for use in the book accompanied by notes about their sequencing and the names of people in the photos; correspondence regarding permissions from contributors, for the use of photographs and for the quotation of Nouwen’s work; a copy of the Contributor’s Agreement used for the project; a proposed biographical sketch for Nouwen; and a proof of the final Befriending Life cover.

Included is correspondence about security updates to email accounts; printouts from the website; a poem “Go to the Place of Sorrow” by Steve Moore; copies of material to be added to the website; a Henri Nouwen Society brochure; the January 2000 edition of News from the Henri Nouwen Society; and a copy of the Winter 2000 edition of The Religion Division Quarterly: The Newsletter of the AAMR Religion Division that mentions a Nouwen related lecture.
