Research and Writings

This series consists of unpublished and published manuscripts written by Helen Lenskyj over the course of her career. Includes: materials related to Lenskyj’s books, journal articles, reviews, reports, workshop presentations, conference addresses, and newspaper and magazine articles. Also included are manuals written by Lenskyj while she worked for the Ontario Ministry of Culture and Recreation.

The bulk of these manuscripts are subdivided into their respective subject areas, based on the four primary research interests (gender and sport, sexual education, education, and Olympic critiques) of Lenskyj during her career. This is the arrangement in which the manuscripts where donated and this order has been preserved.

Professional activities: Ontario. Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities

Professor Lang’s first major collaboration with the then Ministry of Colleges and Universities began in 1991 when he was a member of the Minister’s Task Force on University Accountability. Later he was involved in several joint projects with the Ministry and its successors [the Ministry of Education and Training (from 1995) and from 2000, the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities] and the Council of Ontario Universities; in particular, their Steering Committee on Ontario Graduate Survey (1997-), their Joint Steering Committee on OSAP (1998-2001), and their Key Performance Indicators project (2000-2005). In 2006 he became a member of the Ministry’s Joint Working Group on Student Access Guarantee. From 2008 to 2011 he was the Ministry’s Working Group and Steering Committee on Transfer. Not all of these activities are documented in this series.

In 2006-2007 the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities undertook two inter-related research projects “aimed generally at learning about the characteristics of ‘first-generation’ students.” The first, “College Choice”, focused on the factors that influenced students in seeking post-secondary education and their choices of institutions to attend. The second, dubbed Project STAR (Student Achievement and Retention), “sought to determine the factors that influence the academic performance and retention of students in the first year of university.” It was sponsored by the Canada Millenium Scholarship Foundation and Statistics
Canada.

Files in B2018-0001 document Professor Lang's role as Special Advisor to the Deputy Minister, in particular his involvement with the negotiations between the Government of Ontario and Ontario universities regarding the second Strategic Mandate Agreement (SMA2), and Ontario colleges regarding the Colleges Applied Research and Development Fund [CARDF].

Also included are files regarding the creation of a francophone university in Ontario; the Joint Working Group on Student Access Guarantee, regarding the modernization of the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP); and the Steering Committee on Transfer Credits.

The series consists of biographical and personal records of Professor Bay. The material reflects his personal life, and includes press clippings, articles, and a thesis about him; personal documents such as educational records; documents of identification; personal papers related to life events (baptism, marriage, home ownership, inheritance, death certificates); calendars and a condolence scrapbook.

The arrangement of the material begins with biographical information (press clippings, biographies, curriculum vitae, referees, work about Bay), then personal papers, followed by what he termed “his personal collection”, consisting of items primarily in Norwegian relating to his family and Norway generally. The most intriguing portion of this “collection” is the folders of “illegal papers” [/002(28) – (30)] that Professor Bay buried when he hurriedly left Norway early in World War II and which he dug up sometime after he returned. There are also books about Norwegian resistance, and two books by his uncle.

B2009-0013: This accession consists of correspondence and subject files on individuals who were colleagues of Prof. Hayne during his 40 years in the Department of French at the University of Toronto. It complements other accessions within this fonds (see list below) since many of the letters relate to the discipline of French language and literature in particular and University College and the University of Toronto in general. Correspondents include, among others, F.A.C. Jeanneret, his former teacher as an undergraduate and other colleagues at University College in the Department of French such as, Paul Perron (Chair, Department of French), C.D. McKeown Family fonds

Certificates, annotated publications, and a photograph relating to three generations of members of the McKeown family. University of Toronto students include Patrick Walter Hughes McKeown, BA 1887 (University College), MD CM (Trinity Medical College), 1889, and Walter Woods ('Woody') McKeown, Arts (University College), 1911-12, who served in World War I and then attended Osgoode Hall. Other family members represented include Patrick McKeown, Winnie McKeown and Margaret Woods.

McKeown Family

United College, Winnipeg

Prof. McNaught was appointed Assistant Professor of history in 1947 at United College (now University of Winnipeg). a college funded by the United Church of Canada. The majority of files in this series document his role in the“Harry Crowe Case” of 1958. Prof. Harry Crowe was a member of the History Department at United College and shared Prof. McNaught’s social democratic views. In April, 1958 the principal of United College, Rev. Wilfrid C. Lockhart, was anonymously sent a letter written by Prof. Crowe to Professor W.A. Packer critical of the College’s administration and the role of the ministers in public administration. Between April and September of that year, the matter escalated culminating in the firing of Prof. Crowe by the Board of Regents in July, 1958. In the fall, three members of the faculty, including Prof. McNaught, threatened to resign over the firing of Prof. Crowe. As a result, the Board accepted their letters of protest as letters of resignation. This resignation from United College led to his eventual appointment at the University of Toronto. Included are correspondence, newspaper and magazine articles, and copies of public statements and one file relating to his research on J. S. Woodsworth for his doctoral dissertation.

These are: Textual and Other Material, Photographic Material, Graphic Material, Audio Material, Video Material, and Artifacts.
The first series, Textual and Other Material, includes scripts related to Nelvana (scripts, business, legal records, development files,correspondence, personal diaries, notebooks and other production-related files). This series also includes 31 series bibles and over 500 books and periodicals.
The second series, Photographic Material, includes photographs related to the animation production process, as well as images of Nelvana staff at work and play.
The third series, Graphic Material, includes material from different parts of the production process (animation cells, backgrounds, and cleanups).
They include some of the best known and most valuable of such materials, including Tintin, Rupert, Babar and Dog City. This series also includes posters.
The fourth series, Audio Material, consists largely of commercial recordings used for research. This series also includes rough mixes for Nelvana productions.

This fonds includes six series, divided by format. These are: Textual Material, Photographic Material, Audio Material, Video Material, Cinefilm/Cinex, and Artifacts.

The first series, Textual Material, is chiefly made up of scripts, storyboards, production files, research files, correspondence, meeting notes, equipment files, technical drawings, bylaws, cast/crew lists, contracts and proposals.

The second series, Photographic Material, represents all periods of Spiess’ career, from his early portraiture and fine art images to his industrial/commercial work to production stills documenting his cinematographic work. This series is divided into two subseries: PH.1239 & PH.610977 and PH.240609.

The third series, Audio Material, includes soundtrack production elements and music.

The fourth series, Video Material, includes high quality dubs of the various versions of the finished commercial productions, as well as production elements for those commercials shot on video.

The fifth series, Cinefilms/Cinex, includes finished release prints of the various commercials as well as a number of short films by Spiess.

The sixth series, Artifacts, consists of examples of the tools that Spiess used to teach his students, as well as mementos of his involvement with the CSC.

B2003-0023 (7 boxes, 1892-1921): This accession documents the short life of Gerald Edward Blake from his birth in 1892, his education at Ridley College and the University of Toronto, to his death on the battlefields of France during World War I in 1916. Series 1 and 3 contain his diaries and correspondence to family members in which he describes his experiences at school, his trips to Britain and France in 1913 and most significantly, his 13 months of service during World War I. The majority of his letters are to his mother during his months overseas, but there are also letters to his sisters, Margaret (1893-1963), Constance (1896-1979) and his brother, Verschoyle (1899-1971). Some of these letters are attached to typescript copies, prepared by his brother Verschoyle prior to 1971. Capt. Blake also sent postcards annotated by him which provide a photographic record of British army life in camp, as well as official coloured war service postcards of the British army in action. Other postcards of street scenes in France and Britain helped to illustrate the places he had been including the town of Pozières near which he was killed in 1916 (Series 5). Other war records include his military orders and notes while at the front, and his copy of active service bible. Correspondence and photographs also document his close friendship with his cousins Hume Wrong (1894 – 1954; BA 1915) and Harold Wrong (b.1891; BA 1913), who was also killed in action in July 1916. After Gerald’s death, Hume Wrong assisted Mrs. Blake in making arrangements for her son’s grave site in France and sent home photographs of the cemetery which he visited in 1920-1921 (Series 5). In addition, Mrs. Blake received other remembrances of her son’s service such as a commemorative medal from the British Army, a copy of the history of his battalion’s service in the War and a copy of Volume II of the British Roll of Honour (Series 4).

B2004-0028 (2 files, 1902-1914): Original diploma of Gerald Blake awarded for Bachelor of Arts degree, University of Toronto, 1914; photocopies of letters from Gerald Blake's father, Edward Francis Blake, to administrators at schools (St. Andrews College, and Ridley College) attended by Gerald Blake, 1902-1904. (Photocopies are from original letterbook of E.F. Blake to be given to the Archives of Ontario).

B2006-0025 (1 file, 1915): Four letters written by Gerald Blake to his sister, Constance and his mother in 1915 while serving in W.W. I. Also includes typescript of "Dedicatory Prayer" on death of Gerald Blake.

Love in a fearful land: a Guatemalan story

Item consists of a book which Nouwen wrote about two North American parish priests who served in Guatemala -- Stanley Francis Rother and John Vesey. Three years after Stanley was murdered in Santiago Atitlan on July 28, 1981, John took his place as parish priest. "This is also a story about the mysterious presence of a faithful God in the midst of a country ravaged by violence, torture and assassination. Most of all, it is a story about prayer" (p. 10).

Item consists of a book of reflections, in response to Sister Helen David's illustrations of the Stations of the Cross, written by Nouwen mainly during a three-and-a-half week stay at York Central Hospital in Richmond Hill, Ontario.
