Fear of being hurt or what the other might ask of me. Yet there is a longing and need we have for communion with Jesus. There is a tension between what we long for, but also fear. Talk #4: The heart of Jesus is a welcoming heart, which listens for the cry of the poor. Jesus is eager to welcome us as we are, as we come. In different ways we discover more deeply the mystery of LArche when it is lived out in different cultures. One thing we discover is that the heart of LArche is this very unique gift of relationship, which is true everywhere in LArche. The people at the core of our communities really create the spirit of welcome and intimacy. The spirit of being in touch with ones poverty and the truth of that.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: We all long for forgiveness. This episode of Jesus and the woman caught in adultery is really a beautiful invitation to meet and to be touched by the loving compassion of pour God in Jesus. We see the importance of the gift and grace of knowing our sinfulness, of knowing our need for God, of knowing our need for forgiveness, There is really only one reason that we would want to know about our sinfulness. It is so that we would indeed know more deeply the tender mercy of God.

#6 - Side A: October 24, 1992, English ; Side B: October 25, 1992, French

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: It is indeed the last will and testament of Jesus to give to us, his disciples, this sign of loving service. He, our Lord and master, goes to each one, kneeling at their feet, washing them and drying them. We know full well that apeter was first shocked and resisted, but changes his mind quickly as he wants to be deeply linked with Jesus. It is fitting that we would now repeat this sacramental ritual that Jesus left us as an example to be followed.

A time when we try interiorly to hear the call of wounded people. Jesus doesnt shout; he only gently invites us and respects our liberty. But often we dont hear his invitation.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: This year is our 20th anniversary of LArche. During this retreat will be sharing with you some of the discoveries and things Jesus has been teaching us as we welcomed people who are fragile. Jean Vanier, #7

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a Covenant Retreat in June 1989.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: I want to go to Bethany today. One of the things I would like you to look at as we enter this text is the insistence of Jesus about belief. We are going to have to face what does it mean to believe? Because we are all slightly confused today about belief and psychology. What does it really mean to trust Jesus? Be attentive to how Jesus calls people to belief.

Jean Vanier, October 10, 1990, #1

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a Covenant Retreat from October 10-16, 1990. The retreat took place in North Bay, ON.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: Covenant retreats are the ones I feel most at home with. In some way we are all living the same reality. So I sense I can share at a deeper level. For me also its a privilege to come to N.A. as I am a lot in France. Just to be with you and share with you. To give you my own preoccupations, which I will share some of them with you tonight. But just to be bonded together in our common call.

Jean Vanier, #12

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a Covenant Retreat from October 10-16, 1990. The retreat took place in North Bay, ON.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: Last night was precious. To see how we are all called into a covenant and living a covenant. And some are being asked to announce it. Its been very good for me to be with you. Its important for me to give covenant retreats. I am touched by how LArche is growing in North America, a world where it is not easy to live LArche with all its struggles and difficulties. At seems evident that God is present. So I just wanted to thank you for this week.

Do you want this? We are invited to live a covenant of love and communion. I want through the days of the retreat to point to the person of Jesus so we could ask ourselves the question, Who are you?

#6 - "Coming back home". October 31, 1991

Item consist of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given by Sr. Sue Mosteller at a Covenant Retreat from October 28 - November 2, 1991, in Belgium.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: Today we will enter into the story of the prodigal son. I live at Daybreak with Henri Nouwen who has written a book on the prodigal son and we have talked about it a lot. So many of my ideas are not my own. Today is the day of reconciliation and once we go there we will run into our great resistance to change. Reconciliation is a change of heart.

#10 - "Let me wash your feet, trust me". November 2, 1991

Item consist of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given by Sr. Sue Mosteller at a Covenant Retreat from October 28 - November 2, 1991, in Belgium.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: Today we want to talk about the washing of the feet, which is a sacred time. Its an act that we have not begun to understand really. But I sense more and more that it has significance for us.

Joan Bicknell, "Loss and Bereavement"

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a l'Arche Renewal retreat in Scotland in 1986.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: I want to talk now about loss and put loss in the perspective of the lives of people with a mental handicap. I will start with the three key words from the work of John Bulbee: attachment, separation and loss.

Xavier le Pichon, "Sexuality and Death"

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a l'Arche Renewal retreat in Scotland in 1986.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: I am giving my own vision based on my experience but we are all entitled to our vision as these topics are so personal. You are free people as you listen to me. Today the theme is sex and death. Now why do I choose this. We looked at the beginning with our birth, then this long pilgrimage towards death. A fact of life. For humans the two dominating realities are sex and death. They will be the basis of most of our trials. And thus there are greatest opportunities to make acts of faith and hope in Jesus.

Claire de Miribel, "Embracing Celibacy"

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a l'Arche Renewal retreat in Scotland in 1986.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: I am happy to have this opportunity to explore with you this gift of celibacy, especially in L'Arche. I would like to start with reality that God is calling us to love and to be loved. God wants to fulfill us and wants us to be fully human, each one of us. So our vocation, each of us, as a child of God is a vocation to love. For some of us this means marriage and of others this path is celibacy.

Jean Vanier, "Protect Us from Pain / Unmasking the Illusion"

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a l'Arche Renewal retreat in Scotland in 1986.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: The cry comes from the pit, coming up from what is deepest in us--the pain of the child, the cry of anger, the cry of all oppressed people. Then the answer: God comes down. To be followers of Jesus, there is only one way--to go down. Going down into our own poverty. So the cry is the cry of every human being and its our cry too. And we have to learn to own it, which is difficult because in our world we are not allowed to cry, especially men. But if we can touch our weakness and cry, then we can begin to see where our salvation comes from.

Jean Vanier, "Conflict"

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a l'Arche Renewal retreat in Scotland in 1986.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: I want to share more today about conflict and go deeper into conflict. Why did the passion of Jesus happen? This man was so good! Why was he totally rejected by everyone? What was the dynamics behind all of this? Why did Pilate do what he did? Peter? Judas? the Crowd? All of this is the conflict of conflicts. But can we discover that all of these dynamics are in me too?

John Kavanaugh, Side A: "Commitment to Justice" ; Side B: "Poverty : Four Meanings"

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a l'Arche Renewal retreat in Scotland in 1986.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: Talk Two (con't) We must be compelled by the dignity of personhood to respond to the needs of others. Christ is in all of us. If we see that, then justice it's a radical proposition concerning human dignity. Would it be possible to treat you as Christ, as Mother Theresa does? How do we make this a reality? We have to labor for justice. Put ourselves on the line. Talk Three: This word poverty is often confusing to people. It would be good to clarify this. One kind is dehumanization, which is evil. Christ came to change this and calls us to change it too. We are never meant to live in destitution. Next. is death is all its forms, for death is not a good thing. Christ only accepted death to change death. So that we could say "death where is thy sting?"

Br. Andrew, "History of the Missionaries of Charity"

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a l'Arche Renewal retreat in Scotland in 1986.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: It is a joy and rich experience to be here with you. We have many things in common. I will start by giving you some of my background. I was born in Australia and joined the Jesuits there. I was sent to India after novitiate in 1954 sand was ordained there in 1963. Mother Theresa had started in Calcutta earlier. She felt there should be a group of men doing the same kind of work. She started the men's congregation in 1963.

Leonard Doohan, "Lukan Spirituality" #3

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a l'Arche Renewal retreat in Spokane, WA, in 1983.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: Whenever you approach a scripture passage, generally we should ask 6 questions: 1) What do the words mean? 2) Is there any important historical background? 3) What is the theological content? 4) Is the passage in a strategic place in the gospel? 5) How does the passage relate to my own personal life? and 6) How does the passage challenge us as church or society? Today we will talk about discipleship.

Therese Vanier, "Death, Dying, and Old Age" #4

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a l'Arche Renewal retreat in Spokane, WA, in 1983.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: It's very important for the carers to share what they are feeling. To say, "this is driving me crazy." And occasionally to laugh too. To be able to share how a particular person has angered us by the demands they have made, until we have learnt more about him and what he has lived. What does it do to people to care for dying children? etc.

Mary Cosby, "Cry of the Poor" #2

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a l'Arche Renewal retreat in Spokane, WA, in 1983.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: Church should be about the liberation of spirits. Liberation speaks of new structures, that is the elimination of structures which dehumanize and the creation of structures which liberate people and set them free. The age of service acts is over (e.g. Christmas baskets, etc.) and the age of servant people is here.

Jean Vanier, "Sexuality" #1

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a l'Arche Renewal retreat in Spokane, WA, in 1983.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: I want to begin with the human heart. It is really important for us at L'Arche to realize that our point of departure is there. I will tell you why. Because when you are hurting, there are either of two situations in front of us. Either we can seek true healing through relationships or we can run away from the hurt into other realities like violence or depression.

Jean Vanier, "Sexuality" #2

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a l'Arche Renewal retreat in Spokane, WA, in 1983.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: It's obvious to have fecundity, it's just not a question of placing the seed in the womb or in the earth. To be fecund is also the relationship between the man and woman and between them and the child. It is a long process. Everything in our lives is based on love. We go through a long process of relationship growing up. The backbone of our psychology is this love.

John Kavanaugh, "Following Christ in a Consumer Society" #4

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a l'Arche Renewal retreat in Spokane, WA, in 1983.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: Tape begins with a song. I am interested in the issue of whole heartedness. The person who explains it best to be is Tagore, the Bengali poet. He writes poem stories. We tend to cut down the gospels into little fragments. Whole heartedness means "all together," but not all at once. Let every area of one's life be touched. It doesn't mean we are changed so much that we no longer have any struggles. Or no longer have any thoughts or fears. You are people of faith in midst of struggle. You are willing to let faith touch every area of your lives. Then every area becomes transformed over time. But usually we only give little tiny pieces away.

Jean Vanier, "Interlude" #1

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a l'Arche Renewal retreat in Spokane, WA, in 1983.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: Tape starts with a song. I have been asked to talk about the Interlude in France. In a way I am going to idealize the situation. I like to bring up key words or themes. Words form our consciousness. It's important to hold onto certain words. Also it's important to be conscious of minorities. It's a question of culture; so it's important to listen to minorities.

Sue Mosteller and Brian Halferty, "Stages of Growth" #3

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a l'Arche Renewal retreat in Spokane, WA, in 1983.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: I feel a bit overwhelmed sitting here with Sue. If I am able to say something today, it's things from my own experience. I will share a few reflections and then Sue will speak too. Telling stories and remembering is really important in families, in L'Arche, etc. It can be hard to share some stories because there can be a lot of emotion at times. Yet it is amazing how much impact we have on one another.

Jean Vanier, "Seeds of Hope"

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a l'Arche Renewal retreat in Spokane, WA, in 1983.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: My theme is hope. If you will permit me I will share some of my recent journeys. Maybe it will help you to realize how privileged you are and what your responsibility is.

Stephen Verney, "St. John's Gospel, Chapter 13"

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a Renewal Retreat in 1979. The title of the retreat was "Unless a Man Be Born Again."

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: Chapter 13 starts with Jesus "knowing" his hour had come, which is a look into the consciousness of Jesus. The whole gospel is about the transformation of consciousness. He is now going to cross over the cosmos and return to the Father. Now the great image is going to be love as he loved people to the very end. We should not be sentimental about this love. It is the offering of our live into the hands of God. Given to God for others.

Stephen Verney, "St. John's Gospel, Chapters 14 and 15"

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a Renewal Retreat in 1979. The title of the retreat was "Unless a Man Be Born Again."

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: The hour with the disciples had come and he washed their feet. He poured his own consciousness over them, the gift of his I Am. Then he commanded them to love one another as I have loved you. In Chapter 14 he goes into "let not your hearts be troubled". He has given them a vision both they can't live it yet. Now he is going to tell them the mystery of how obedience to that command will become possible.

Stephen Verney, "St. John's Gospel, Chapters 20 and 21"

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a Renewal Retreat in 1979. The title of the retreat was "Unless a Man Be Born Again."

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: I think it is important to say this. Christians don't believe in life "after" death because there is no "after" death. It's the wrong word. "After" is a time word. What Christians really believe is life through death.
