April 1985

File consists of correspondence and other material received in and/or regarding events taking place in April 1985. Includes an invitation and arrangements to act as Harvard's delegate at the Academic Convocation in Commemoration of the Centennial Year of St. John's Seminary, Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts. Also includes material related to a talk given on "Mutual Ministry and Aging" for the Elder Life Corporation, Archdiocese of Boston.

Lenten series in Weston - March 12 - April 9, 1984

File consists of letter to Nouwen outlining expectations and dates for his lecture series at the Campion Renewal Center, Weston, Massachusetts. Also includes several handwritten manuscripts of the talks that he gave. Including "Suffering and the New Life", "The House of Fear to the House of Love", "The Holy Spirit". These were Lenten meditations based on the Gospel of Luke.

United States Catholic Mission Association - September to December 1983

File consists of correspondence and other documents related to Nouwen's US Speaking Tour during the fall of 1983, which was titled "Interrupted Journey: Peacemaking in Nicaragua and Peru." Nouwen was speaking about the political situation in Nicaragua. The file includes a financial report of expenses and monies raised, his itinerary, as well as a 9 page, single-spaced draft document written by Nouwen to summarize his activities. This is a very detailed document, including names of those he met, his impressions, his feelings and what he spoke about.

File also includes two copies of a scrapbook documenting the speaking tour, "Interrupted Journey." One copy is the original copy, while the other is a photocopy of the original. These scrapbooks contain publicity documents, copies of newspaper articles, advertisements for Nouwen's talks, memoranda between planning committees for Nouwen's talks, correspondence regarding the talks and Nouwen's tour, itinerary information, and addresses of correspondents and contacts. These scrapbooks were likely created and maintained by the organizing committee of the speaking tour in Washington, D.C. Copies were then given to Nouwen. File includes a summary of the speaking tour, including the schedule with dates and locations of the tour (from September 10, 1983, to November 5, 1983).

File consists of correspondence and other material received in and/or regarding events taking place in March 1985. Includes Nouwen participating as speaker at Sts. Peter and Paul Church in South Boston as well as letters of appreciation for his talks.

May 1985

File consists of correspondence and other material received in and/or regarding events taking place in May 1985. Includes material related to Nouwen speaking on "Refugees" and "Action" at the Franciscan Renewal Center in Scottsdale, Arizona, on "In Hidden-ness and Compassion" at Cenacle in Brighton, Massachusetts, and on "Spirituality of Peacemaking: Personal and Global Perspective" at Bowling Green State University, Ohio.

Puget Sound Conference on Christian Community - June 20, 1981

File consists of correspondence received by Nouwen after speaking at the Puget Sound Conference on Christian Community at Pacific Lutheran University. Also includes pamphlets and a note by Nouwen giving permission to copy and release a cassette of his presentation.

Chicago - Bob Ferrigan - April 27, 1981

File consists of correspondence and other material, from Bob Ferrigan and Rev. James P. Roache, regarding Nouwen's role as featured speaker at the Presbyterial Day of the Presbyterial Senate of the Archdiocese of Chicago. Includes Nouwen's handwritten notes for the talk as well as a copy of the transcript for the talk given by Nouwen "Priest as Person: A Theological Reflection on the Chicago Experience." The transcript was forwarded by Rev. Roache. Also includes copies of "Focus 1980/1981 A series of research conferences conducted by the Presbyterial Senate of the Archdiocese of Chicago: From Recruitment through Retirement."

Baccalaureate/Yale Commencement - May 23, 1981

File consists of correspondence and other material regarding Nouwen's involvement as preacher in the Yale Divinity School's Baccalaureate service. Includes a program from the service. Nouwen's sermon was entitled "Go Where You Would Rather Not Go." May be same or similar address given at Princeton Theological Seminary commencement on June 2, 1981.

Cleveland Lectures - May 6-8, 1981

File consists of correspondence and other material regarding Nouwen's leadership in A Day of Celebration for the Catholic Diocese of Cleveland co-sponsored by the Office of Continuing Education of Priests and the Mullen Lecture Series. Also includes a program for "A Day of Celebration" and a TSF Bulletin, April 1982, with an article by Robert Durback entitled "Henri Nouwen: Spiritual Guide for a Church in Transition." The bulletin was sent by Robert Durback.

File consists of correspondence and other material regarding Nouwen's participation as homilist for the Recommitment Liturgy at St. Patrick's Cathedral during the annual NCEA (National Catholic Educational Association) Religious Education Congress in New York City. Includes correspondence from Twenty-Third Publications regarding using Nouwen's homily as an article in an issue of Todays Parish. Nouwen's talk was entitled "The Spirituality of the Religious Teacher".

Clergy Conference Battle Creek - May 17-18, 1981

File consists of correspondence and other material regarding Nouwen's involvement in the 27th Annual Clergy Conference at the Veterans Administration Medical Center, Battle Creek, Michigan. Nouwen spoke on "Compassion" and "Patience".

Commencement Sermon, Princeton Theological Seminary - June 2, 1981

File consists of correspondence and other material regarding Nouwen's involvement as speaker for the Princeton Theological Seminary Commencement, Princeton, New Jersey. The original typescript of the Commencement Sermon and a copy are included. There is reference to the speech being taped for the Speech Studio's library and also being published in The Bulletin, Princeton's newsletter. An outline of the sermon gives the title "Take you where you rather would not go." May be same or similar address given at Yale Divinity School's Baccalaureate service on May 23, 1981.

Also includes a letter, from Lani Johnson, regarding a story they did together being published in the March 13th issue of Religious News Service.

Catholic Peace Fellowship - April 11, 1981

Includes a letter from Watt Noyalis enquiring about meeting Nouwen for a meeting sometime during the conference.

File consists of a letter, from Rev. Ray Jean, inviting Nouwen for a personal visit and to deliver a sermon during the Advent season at Notre Dame Church, Connecticut. Annotations on the letter indicate that Nouwen accepted the invitation and spoke on December 7th on "Prayer."

Canadian Broadcasting Center - February 26, 1981

File consists of a letter from producer Tim Bentley of the radio program Open Circuit regarding arrangements to conduct an interview with Nouwen about his book The Wounded Healer and other topics. The letter appears to be confirming arrangements, however, there is nothing to indicate that the interview did take place.

Trinity Institute - February 21, 1981

File consists of correspondence and other material regarding Nouwen's participation in the National Conference of the Trinity Institute, New York, New York. He gave a lecture entitled "From Absurdity to Obedience: An Experience of Living" that was recorded by the Episcopal Radio T.V. Foundation Inc. for distribution on Catacomb cassettes. It was later to be published in the Trinity Institute Journal. However, it was not published in the Journal due to a conflict with Nouwen's publisher Morehouse-Barlow and the lectures similarity to sections of Nouwen's book "Making All Things New."

This lecture included a slide presentation. Typed notes for the lecture are included in the file. Also includes correspondence and other material on the CILA (Community for the International Lay Apostolate) retreat at the University of Notre Dame in February 1981.

Lecture at Wesley Seminary - Oct. 17, 1980

File consists of a letter from Mark Lancaster regarding Nouwen coming to the Wesley Seminary at the American University, Washington, D.C., for a conversation on the need for a contemplative life in the midst of a busy pastoral one.

File consists of correspondence, mainly from Stephen Bolle, and other material regarding Nouwen's leadership at the Diocese of New York's Fall 1980 Clergy Conference at the Graymoor Unity Center in Garrison, New York. The theme of the conference was "compassion." Nouwen gave a series of four presentations on compassion and a special presentation on van Gogh. File includes registration form, schedule and travel itinerary. Also includes a newspaper clipping on the event from the "Episcopal New Yorker" that makes reference to tapes that were made by Rev. Fred Cartier and available at the Christ Church Tape Ministry.

File consists of correspondence regarding Nouwen speaking at the Alumni Convocation at the Protestant Episcopal Theological Seminary in Alexandria, Virginia in October 1978. However, this lecture series was cancelled due to the illness and death of Nouwen's mother. Includes a telegram sent to Nouwen by the Seminary upon hearing the news of Nouwen's mother's illness. The correspondence resumes in 1979 when Nouwen is invited to give the 1980 Zabriskie Lecture as well as accept an honourary degree from the Seminary. Includes correspondence from people thanking Nouwen for his lecture as well as a copy of The Virginia Seminary Journal, January 1981, which contains a copy of his lecture entitled "Downward Mobility: Vocation, Temptation, and Formation in Ministry". Also includes brochures, travel arrangements, a program and the student newspaper, the Ambro, which contains a poem inspired by Nouwen visit. Although the file is labeled October 5 - 6, 1980, the lecture took place October 15 - 17, 1980. The original talk was scheduled for October 5 - 6, 1978.

Correspondence, with David Williamson, regarding Nouwen's lecture given at the Colonial Church of Edina, Annual Fall Lectureship on October 23, 1980 in Edina, Minnesota. Nouwen spoke on "Solitude and Intimacy in Contemporary Society." Correspondence, from William Hulme, regarding Nouwen's lecture at Luther-Northwestern Seminaries conference "Challenge for the Ministry in the Eighties III," on October 24, 1980, in St. Paul, Minnesota. Nouwen's talk was entitled "Spirituality of Compassion," where he spoke on compassion and patience. Correspondence with, Vincent Eilers, regarding Nouwen acting as celebrant at the Serra Seminary Symposium, for St. John Vianney College Seminary and St. Paul Seminary on October 25, 1980. Nouwen spoke on "Spiritual Life in the 1980s." Includes brochures, flyers, song sheets, travel itinerary and thank you cards and letters from attendees of his talks. Also includes a news clipping on the event at the Serra Seminary Symposium and a photograph of the Colonial Church of Edina.
