Zamorna! and the House by the churchyard : correspondence and texts

File consists of correspondence with James Reaney, Reaney's drafts for the libretto, and John Beckwith's research notes for an opera about the Brontë family, titled The House by the Churchyard. The proposed opera ultimately became a play titled Zamorna! and the House by the Churchyard (1999).

Wendake / Huronia : research and performance records

File contains programs, sketches, libretto, correspondence, research notes, and grant reports relating to the commission, composition, and performance of John Beckwith’s composition Wendake/Huronia. This piece was written with support from the Ontario Arts Council (Music Commissioning program grant) for the Brookside Music Association (Midland, Ontario). It is made up of six panels (Raquettes, Champlain, Le Canotage, La Grande Fête des Âmes, Lamentation 1642, and  l’Avenir), with texts compiled from a variety of historical and modern sources. This file contains correspondence with those involved or consulted during the composition and correspondence relating to the premiere performance, including Georges Sioui, Michael J. Rudman, Ken MacDonald, John Steckley, and John French, among others. The file also includes final reports for the commissioning grant, Beckwith’s research notes, and notes, examples, and scripts from an illustrated talk by Beckwith on “Music for Huronia,” given at the University of Calgary (October 2, 2015); Arts & Letters Club of Toronto (October 29, 2015); McGill University (March 22, 2016); Seniors’ College, University of Toronto (January 11, 2017); and the Canadian Music Centre (May 28, 2017) as part of a day-long seminar on “Place, Politics, and Cultural Exchange: Indigenous-Settler Collaboration in Canadian Art Music.” The file also contains copies of programs for performances by Brookside Music (2015) and The Toronto Consort (2017), and a notebook with John Beckwith's research notes for Wendake / Huronia and other notes from 2016-2017.

File consists of manuscript scores and copies of the parts for an arrangement by John Beckwith of a piece from the The Canadian Church Psalmody (1845) by J.P. Clarke, with text by David Willson. The arrangement was performed as part of the "Happy Birthday Ontario and Quebec" program at Music at Sharon (July 14, 1984). Arranged for oboe, trumpet, percussion, violin, viola, cello, bass, organ, and SATB chorus.

Wednesday's child : text, correspondence and performance records

File contains the handwritten text for "Wednesday's Child" by the lyricist James Reaney, as well as correspondence regarding the commission, reviews, and a copy of the radio script. "Wednesday's Child" was written as "a birthday card" for the celebration of the fifteenth anniversary of CBC's radio program Wednesday Night. It aired December 4, 1962. Produced by John Reeves with cast Beth Lockerbie, Maxine Miller, Paul Kligman, and Douglas Rain.

Wednesday's child

File contains the master ink transparencies, an annotated copy of the transparencies, and sketches for Beckwith's composition, written for three speakers, soprano, tenor, flute, viola, piano, and percussion. Text by James Reaney.

Volpone : programs

File contains programs from a 1962 production of Ben Jonson's play Volpone as part of the Festival of the Dominion Drama Festival, Central Ontario Drama League at Hart House Theatre. One of the programs is annotated by John Beckwith with notes for musical cues. Beckwith arranged and composed the music for the production. The play was directed by Pamela Terry.

Voice of mercy

File consists of the manuscript score and a percussion part for an arrangement by John Beckwith of the Presbyterian hymn with text by William Cowper from The Choir (Halifax, 1887). This arrangement was part of the "Images of Canada: 1888" program at Music at Sharon (July 23, 1988). Arranged for organ, percussion, and SATB chorus.

Ut re mi fa sol la : performance and publication records

File contains a copy of the program, program note, and poster for the premiere performance of “Ut re mi fa sol la: six fantasies for solo guitar” by John Beckwith, performed by Peter Higham. File also contains an annotated proof of the piece with suggestions and corrections from Higham and related correspondence between Higham and Beckwith. “Ut re mi fa sol la” was written for Higham and commissioned with the support of Mount Allison University’s Marjorie Young Bell Fine Arts and Music Fund.
