Concert programmes

Series contains concert programmes dated from 1939-1958. Programmes reflect performances from Kathleen Parlow as well as the performances of the South Mountain String Quartet, Parlow String Quartet, Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Canadian Trio, and many of other performers. Concert programmes are from a variety of locations worldwide including the United States, England, Finland, Belgium, Germany, Poland, and many other locations. Programmes are in black and white and colour. Some programmes have gold gilt edges as well as other visually interesting features.

Compositions

Series consists of manuscript music and scores for Buczynski's radio music and children's pieces.

Photographs

Series consists of promotional and personal photographs of J. Churchill Arlidge, his family, and groups to which he belonged, including the Independent Order of Foresters (Arlidge was the High Organist); Christ Church at Deer Park, Toronto, Ontario; and a Grand Jury in 1907, which was appointed to investigate and make recommendations regarding public institutions and services in Toronto.

Musical compositions

Series consists of compositions and arrangements by Gena Branscombe, including published sheet music with inscriptions from the composer and manuscript copies of scores and parts.

Postmortem documents

Series consists of documents created after Leslie Bell's death, including letters of condolence written to his wife Leona Bell; copies of his obituaries; and, documents pertaining to the Leslie Bell Scholarship, which was established in his name by the Leslie Bell Singers Alumnae in 1971. The award was created to support choral conductors further their professional careers and enhance their conducting abilities. The award is managed by the Ontario Arts Council (OAC).

Photographs

Series consists of photographs of faculty, musicians-in-residence, guest artists, students, faculty events, and facilities, which were collected and used by the promotions office at the University of Toronto Faculty of Music.

Memorabilia

Series contains three-dimensional memorabilia objects, including three glass plate negatives from Kathleen Parlow's time in Petersburg; three framed photographs of Parlow's parents[?]; two metal stamps of Parlow with her violin; two framed photographs of Parlow (one as a young child); the National Award in Music medal from the University of Alberta; a family photo album, including a family tree; an Edison cylinder record of Parlow playing Nocturne, Op. 9, no. 2 in E-flat Major by Chopin (recorded 1913); an Edison 78 RPM record of Parlow playing Melodie by Tchaikovsky; and, 2 audio cassettes with recordings of the Parlow String Quartet. Series also includes drawings and watercolours of Kathleen Parlow.

Teaching materials

Series consists of examination papers set, lecture notes, and student papers from Kenins's time at the Faculty of Music, University of Toronto.

Compositions : scores, parts, and sketches

Series consists of manuscript scores and parts, and sketches, for Lothar Klein's instrumental, vocal, choral, chamber, and orchestral works. File also contains film and incidental music written by Klein.

Promotional material for faculty events

Series consists of promotional materials created by the Faculty of Music to advertise events, facilities, and programs at the Faculty of Music. Materials include brochures, pamphlets, posters, and season event calendars.

Opera school

Series consists of materials from the Opera School or Opera Division at the University of Toronto. Materials include correspondence, press clippings, notes on performances, tour schedules, role assignments, rehearsal schedules, notes on props and furniture, budgets, and internal memorandums.

Audio tapes

Series contains audio recordings of various performances by Elyakim (Peter) Taussig and colleagues, predominantly from CBC radio broadcasts of his concerts.

Library catalogues

Series consists of catalogues for Boyd Neel's collections of scores and parts for orchestras that he conducted (the Boyd Neel String Orchestra and the Hart House Orchestra) and his collection of audio recordings in various formats.

Sound recordings

Series consists of materials for: Cascando (1963-1965), Wordsong (1971-1973), Guitarmusic for John Cage (1972-1975), Wordmusic (1973-1974), Mikemusics (1973-1977), Silencesong (1974), Minutemusics (1977-1980), Thunderword (1978-1979), Nonologue (Onemanshow, 1980), and Sh! (Mikemusics, 1973-1977).

Audio and video recordings

Series consists of audio and video recordings of performances by Ron Collier and of compositions and arrangements by Collier. The series includes audio cassettes from the Duke Ellington Society that were issued to its members; audio recordings of Collier's lectures on Ellington at Humber College (1980s); performances by the Ron Collier Quintet and the Ron Collier Tentet; and records from the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) radio transcription service of performances by Collier, his groups, and his compositions and arrangements.

Music manuscripts

Series consists of manuscript scores dedicated to, copied for, or copied by Emmy Heim. Scores include repertoire that Heim performed at various recitals and concerts, as well as music written for Heim by students of Arnold Schönberg, who she likely met while performing at his Verein für Privataufführungen, and who—like her—emigrated to the United Kingdom in the 1930s.

Awards and honours

Series consists of materials relating to awards and honours received by Greta Kraus, including the Toronto Arts Award (1990), the Order of Ontario (1991), and the Order of Canada (1993). Materials include correspondence, programs, newspaper clippings and other press releases, and photographs. The series also includes two VHS tapes with recordings of the Order of Ontario ceremony (May 8, 1991) and the Toronto Arts Awards (August 15, 1990).

Family records

Series consists of materials pertaining to Elizabeth Benson Guy's family, including funeral service programs, obituaries, newspaper clippings, and articles by her husband John Dentay. Series also contains a letter from Tom Guy to Sarah Louise Guy (1893-1964) (Elizabeth Benson Guy's parents).

Performance records

Series contains of materials relating to Elizabeth Benson Guy's performance career, consisting predominantly of programs and reviews of her performances.

Correspondence

Series consists of correspondence sent to Emmy Heim from various colleagues and friends, including correspondence E.G. Dentay, Margaret G. Skipworth (Lady Margaret Hall), and Victor Zuckerkandl, as well as some handwritten draft replies by Emmy Heim.

Education

Series consists of correspondence, programs, certificates, and newspaper clippings pertaining to Stratton's education in vocal music. Series also contains his personal copies of his master's thesis and doctoral dissertation in philosophy.

Personal and professional papers

Series consists of records relating to Derek Holman's education and career as an educator, composer, conductor, and organist. The series includes awards, certificates, degrees, photographs, programs, posters, reviews of performances, notebooks, correspondence, lecture notes, and assorted writings by Derek Holman.

Photographs of musicians

Series consists of photographs of Canadian and European musicians from the early 1900s, as well as Giuliana Gattoni's collection of publicity photographs from the late 1980s and early 1990s, which predominantly consists of photographs of Canadian Opera Company productions.

Promotional events and free concerts

Series consists of records pertaining to various promotional events and free concerts produced by the Aldeburgh Connection. The series includes materials for one concert by Stephen Ralls and Bruce Ubukata prior to the official formation of the Aldeburgh Connection concert series, “Opera in the Drawing Room” (January 14, 1979). Each file consists of programs, scripts, scores annotated by Ralls and Ubukata, set and lighting designs, posters, and reviews.

Notation and manuscripts

Series consists of examples of notations, particularly neumes and mensural notation. Examples are mostly taken from images included in the book Handbuch der Notationskunde by Johannes Wolf. Wolf was one of Arnold Walter's teachers when he studied musicology at the University of Berlin. Series also includes reproductions of manuscripts included in Storia della musica attraverso l'immagine by Georg Kinsky, Histoire de la musique des origines à la fin du XIVe siècle by Théodore Gérold, and World history of the dance by Curt Sachs; sequences from St. Gallen; illustrated pages from the Codex Manesse, Sachsenspiegel, Psautier de Lothaire, and Las Cantigas de Santa María; and a plate interpreting animal symbols.

Music used in days of silent film, at Luseland

Series consists of 6 volumes of sheet music used by Edith McConica for silent films in Luseland, Saskatchewan (1920-1928). Includes the following volumes, some of which include McConica's annotations:

Series consists of recordings of Vic Centro on accordion and piano, including a dub of an episode of the radio show "As Night Falls" on KSUI-FM, hosted by John Rapson, featuring Vic Centro, and a demo master tape of Vic Centro, including performances of "Perdido," "Moonlight serenade," "Wave," "Unforgettable," "Spanish eyes," "I wanna be around," and "Paper moon."

Series consists of programs and posters from concerts held at Gallery 345, as well as thank you cards and notes from performers, and building plans for the gallery space and building (345 Souraren Ave., Toronto, Ontario). Series also includes a USB thumb drive (173 MB) with archived files from the Gallery 345 website, including performance announcements, program information, and performer biographies.

Programs for special events and concerts

Series consists of various programs for concerts and recitals presented by the Toronto Wagner Society (TWS), including their annual birthday programme for Richard Wagner, and conferences on Wagner arranged by the TWS in cooperation with the Canadian Opera Company, Toronto Arts and Letters Club, and the University of Toronto. Early compositions and arrangements

Series consists of compositions and arrangements by Phil Nimmons, written early in his career before he formed his own group in 1953. Series includes charts for the Ray Norris Quintette, of which Nimmons was a member.

Lectures, articles, and books

Series consists of drafts, notes, and correspondence for articles, lectures, and a book outline on electronic music by Myron Schaeffer, which were written during his tenure as director of the University of Toronto Electronic Music Studio (UTEMS).

Postmortem documents

Series contains letters from Robert Aitken and Herbert Deutsch (of Hoftrsa University) to Myron Schaeffer's wife, Lilein Schaeffer, and two obituaries, including one written by Ann Osborn in The Muse.

Education and outreach activities

Series consists of records relating to events and concerts by Esprit Orchestra as part of their outreach and educational initiatives, including Towards a Living Art (TALA) and Creative Sparks, which includes their annual New Wave Composers Festival. These programs, and other related activities, support one of Esprit's core initiatives: to cultivate the next generation of new music professionals.

Awards

Series consists of correspondence, nominating letters, speeches, and certificates for awards received by the Esprit Orchestra. Awards include the Award of Distinction from Sunco (received [1985]); Jean A. Chalmers National Music Award (1995); nomination for a Juno award (1998 for Tabuh-Tabuhan, Music of Colin McPhee); Musician of the Year (Alex Pauk) by the Toronto Musicians' Association (2000); and the Toronto emerging composer award (2003), which Esprit Orchestra was involved with.
