Memorabilia

Series consists of materials relating to Harry and Ida "Claudette" Culley, particularly as pertains to their piano duo, the "Black and White Spotters." Materials include photographs of the duo, newspaper clippings with performance announcements, a script from one of their appearances on Arkansas Salute, CKCL radio (July 26, 1934), a fan letter from Ida Baker (April 8, 1940), a poster from the performance at the Royal Opera House in London with Bebe Daniels and Ben Lyon (August 30, 1937), and articles by their granddaughter Joanne Culley about the duo and their sheet music collection (2021-2022). Series also includes a copy of Joanne's novel Claudette on the keys (Crossfield Publishing, 2021), which is based on the lives of Ida Fernley and Harry Culley.

Series consists of promotional materials created for Opera Division productions to promote performances, including programs, posters, and brochures, as well as photographs from Opera Division performances, and newspaper clippings of reviews and press releases.

Records include meeting minutes and correspondence from the board of directors and associated committees; financial records, including budgets, year-end financial statements, and reports to granting agencies; performance records, including planning files from subscription and non-subscription concerts, national and international tours, and composer commissions; materials relating to the orchestra's education and outreach activities; promotional materials, including posters, photographs, programs, and reviews; records relating to recording projects, including CDs, music for films, and radio broadcasts; awards received by the orchestra and its musical director Alex Pauk; and correspondence with musicians, composers, and other associations.

New Music Concerts fonds

Fonds consists of the administrative records of New Music Concerts (NMC), from its first concert in 1972 to 2020. Records consist of administrative and financial records, including correspondence with composers, performers, and concert venues, budgets, grant applications, and board meeting minutes; concert planning documents, including touring records; and promotion and publicity documents, including programs, brochures, posters, reviews, advertisements, and press releases. The fonds also includes select audio and video recordings of NMC concerts.

New Music Concerts

Public relations, promotion, and marketing materials

Series consists of public relations and promotional materials created to promote Esprit Orchestra and their performances, including programs, posters, concert season brochures, flyers, advertisements in newspapers and magazines, newspaper clippings of reviews, promotional photographs, posters, and other general marketing materials.

Stratton-Clarke collection

Collection consists of approximately 6,500 78 rpm records, and the personal papers of one of its collectors, John Stratton. Stratton's personal papers provide contextual information about one of the collectors of the "Stratton-Clarke Collection," and primary source material relating to his research of historical vocal recordings and recording practices.

The 78 rpm record collection spans nearly the entire history of 78 rpm record production, from acoustic recordings to early electronic recordings and beyond, covering the first half of the twentieth century. The recordings are primarily pressed on shellac discs, ranging from 7 to 14 inches on diameter, and capture performances of approximately 1,000 vocalists, performing the works of more than 900 different composers on at least 100 different labels. The collection was loosely built on four of Stratton's main interests regarding historical vocal recordings: the "Golden age of singing" (pre World War One); the Mapleson recordings (live Metropolitan Opera performances captured on wax cylinders by Lionel Mapleson between 1900 and 1904); Canadian performers; and pre-revolutionary Russian recordings (pre-1917). The collection includes unpublished and test pressings, as well as published materials.

Programs, posters, and other ephemera

Series consists of programs and posters from concerts held at Gallery 345, as well as thank you cards and notes from performers, and building plans for the gallery space and building (345 Souraren Ave., Toronto, Ontario). Series also includes a USB thumb drive (173 MB) with archived files from the Gallery 345 website, including performance announcements, program information, and performer biographies.

Series consists of photographs of faculty, musicians-in-residence, guest artists, students, faculty events, and facilities, which were collected and used by the promotions office at the University of Toronto Faculty of Music.

Subseries consists of promotional photographs of faculty and staff at the University of Toronto Faculty of Music. The photographs were collected and used by the Faculty's publicity office in their newsletters, academic calendars, events calendars, brochures, and other promotional material.

Awards and certificates

Subseries consists of certificates and related documents, including photographs and correspondence, for awards and degrees that Derek Holman received, including his Doctor of Music from the University of London, honorary Doctor of Sacred Letters from the University of Trinity College, Order of Canada, and Canadian citizenship.

Promotion and publicity documents

Series contains publicity and promotional materials for New Music Concerts (NMC), including programs and posters for individual performances, reviews of performances by NMC, and season brochures.

William Aide : [photographs]

File consists of four promotional photographs of William Aide, including headshots and photographs of Aide playing the piano. Photographs are from various points in his career.

Teaching, conducting, composing, and performing records

Subseries contains records from Derek Holman's career in education, conducting, composition, and performance, including his time with the Bishop Strachan School, Canadian Children's Opera Chorus, Church of St. Simon the Apostle, Concord Singers, Croydon Bach Society, Croydon Parish Church, Grace Church-on-the-Hill, Royal School of Church Music, St. Thomas' Church Choir, University of London, and the University of Toronto. The subseries includes correspondence, photographs, contracts and agreements, assorted writings, lecture notes, and programs.

Collection consists of materials relating to musical life in Toronto, Ontario. The collection includes photographs of various Canadian and European musicians, including various photographs of Canadian Opera Company productions from the late 1980s and early 1990s, autographs from various opera singers and musicians from the late-nineteenth century, three scrapbooks with newspaper clippings and programs, and a collection of songs published in the Toronto Evening Telegram at the end of the nineteenth century.

John Adaskin Project collection

Collection consists of records of the activities of the John Adaskin Project, formerly the Graded Educational Music Plan, started by John Adaskin in 1961 at the Canadian Music Centre. Records include notes and drafts of articles, lectures, presentations, and workshops on the project; records and correspondence relating to commissions by the project; correspondence with contributors and educators; guidelines for submissions; lists of publications; and records from the first three symposiums and seminars hosted by the project (1963, 1965, and 1967).

John Adaskin Project

File consists of correspondence regarding John Beckwith's book In Search of Alberto Guerrero (Waterloo, Ont.: Wilfrid Laurier University Press, 2006). Correspondents include Luis Merino Montero, Juan Orrego-Salas, Ted Maroney, Richard Butler, Ray Dudley, Margaret Sheppard Privitello, Marilyn Brown, Kevin Bazzana, and William Aide. File also contains a program, photographs, and correspondence relating to the memorial concert for Alberto Guerrero in Walter Hall at the University of Toronto Faculty of Music (October 25, 1990) and other photographs of Alberto Guerrero used in Beckwith's book.
