Correspondence and family records

Series consists of letters to J. Churchill Arlidge concerning his performances; family correspondence; Arlidge's wedding certificate; and a jewel pendant that belonged to his mother.

Photographs

Series consists of promotional and personal photographs of J. Churchill Arlidge, his family, and groups to which he belonged, including the Independent Order of Foresters (Arlidge was the High Organist); Christ Church at Deer Park, Toronto, Ontario; and a Grand Jury in 1907, which was appointed to investigate and make recommendations regarding public institutions and services in Toronto.

Teaching and performance materials

Series consists of materials created by J. Churchill Arlidge in the course of his teaching and performance career, including sheet music with added vocal parts, written in his own hand, a practice record booklet that he published in Toronto in 1907, and the script and program for a concert that he gave in the 1880s.

Promotional materials and memorabilia

Series consists of a promotional booklet and poster, which feature the same photograph and include excerpts of newspaper reviews of his performances. Series also includes his wooden conductor's baton.

Music manuscripts

Series consists of manuscript scores and parts for original compositions and arrangements by J. Churchill Arlidge, as well as manuscripts in Arlidge's hand for music by other composers, written out for performance.

Music used in days of silent film, at Luseland

Series consists of 6 volumes of sheet music used by Edith McConica for silent films in Luseland, Saskatchewan (1920-1928). Includes the following volumes, some of which include McConica's annotations:

[Piano pedagogy volumes]

Series consists of two volumes (listed below) used by Edith McConica when she was learning, and later teaching, piano. Both volumes are annotated by Edith and her children.

Music manuscripts

Series consists of manuscript scores dedicated to, copied for, or copied by Emmy Heim. Scores include repertoire that Heim performed at various recitals and concerts, as well as music written for Heim by students of Arnold Schönberg, who she likely met while performing at his Verein für Privataufführungen, and who—like her—emigrated to the United Kingdom in the 1930s.

Memorabilia

Series contains three-dimensional memorabilia objects, including three glass plate negatives from Kathleen Parlow's time in Petersburg; three framed photographs of Parlow's parents[?]; two metal stamps of Parlow with her violin; two framed photographs of Parlow (one as a young child); the National Award in Music medal from the University of Alberta; a family photo album, including a family tree; an Edison cylinder record of Parlow playing Nocturne, Op. 9, no. 2 in E-flat Major by Chopin (recorded 1913); an Edison 78 RPM record of Parlow playing Melodie by Tchaikovsky; and, 2 audio cassettes with recordings of the Parlow String Quartet. Series also includes drawings and watercolours of Kathleen Parlow.

Memorabilia

Series consists of autographed photographs for Dr. Ernesto Vinci of Licia Albanese and Risë Stevens, Alexander Gray, Edward Johnson (with unidentified students), and Wilfrid Pelletier.

Notation and manuscripts

Series consists of examples of notations, particularly neumes and mensural notation. Examples are mostly taken from images included in the book Handbuch der Notationskunde by Johannes Wolf. Wolf was one of Arnold Walter's teachers when he studied musicology at the University of Berlin. Series also includes reproductions of manuscripts included in Storia della musica attraverso l'immagine by Georg Kinsky, Histoire de la musique des origines à la fin du XIVe siècle by Théodore Gérold, and World history of the dance by Curt Sachs; sequences from St. Gallen; illustrated pages from the Codex Manesse, Sachsenspiegel, Psautier de Lothaire, and Las Cantigas de Santa María; and a plate interpreting animal symbols.

Opera houses and theatres

Series consists of glass lantern slides of various opera houses and theatres in Europe, including: Theater an der Wien; Esterhazy; Teatro Communale, Florence; La Scala, Milan; Teatro San Carlo, Naples; Old Dresden State Theatre; State Opera House, Dresden; Bayreuth [Festspielhaus]; Opera Comique, Paris; Findling House, Chelse; Civic Opera House, Chicago; Metropolitan Opera House; and, Bloomington [Theatre, Indiana].

Instruments

Series consists of glass lantern slides showing images of various instruments. Slides include images of instruments as included in Storia della musica attraverso l'immagine by Georg Kinsky, and Histoire de la musique des origines à la fin du XIVe siècle by Théodore Gérold, as well as reproductions of paintings and other artistic renderings of instruments. Instruments include the theorbo, lute, harp, viola da gamba, viola d'amore, German flute, lyre, guitar, unfretted and fretted clavichords, spinnet, Silberman pianoforte, gravicembalo, and oliphants.

Opera stagings

Series consists of glass plate slides of stage designs and settings for particular productions of operas and other stage productions, including: Fidelio by Ludwig van Beethoven; Wozzeck by Alban Berg; Giunio Bruto by Domenico Cimarosa; Pélleas and Mélisande by Claude Debussy; Orfeo ed Eurydice by Christoph Willibald Gluck; unidentified oratorios and operas by George Frideric Handel; Ballet du roi and Isis by Jean-Baptiste Lully; Magic Flute by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart; Salome by Richard Strauss; Aida, Don Carlos, La forza del destino, and Macbeth by Giuseppe Verdi; and Der fliegende Holländer (The Flying Dutchman), Tannhäuser, Lohengrin, Das Rheingold, Die Walküre, Tristan und Isolde, Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, Götterdämmerung, and Parsifal* by Richard Wagner.

Stage designers represented in this collection include: Karl Friedrich Schinkel, R.E. Jones, Adolphe Appia, Ludwig Sievert, Panos Aravantinos, Norman Bel Geddes, Salvador Dali, Caspar Neher, Giorgio de Chirico, and Rolf Gérard.

Early compositions and arrangements

Series consists of compositions and arrangements by Phil Nimmons, written early in his career before he formed his own group in 1953. Series includes charts for the Ray Norris Quintette, of which Nimmons was a member.

Lecture notes

Series consists of lectures notes, predominantly on German Lieder, for lectures and lecture-recitals by Emmy Heim. Some notes are dated and a few include copies of the associated program.

Correspondence

Series consists of correspondence sent to Emmy Heim from various colleagues and friends, including correspondence E.G. Dentay, Margaret G. Skipworth (Lady Margaret Hall), and Victor Zuckerkandl, as well as some handwritten draft replies by Emmy Heim.

Memorabilia

Series consists of a copy of Emmy Heim's obituary by Ronald Hambleton in the Globe and Mail (October 13, 1954); the Royal Conservatory of Music of Toronto Monthly Bulletin (November 1954) with an obituary written by Sir Ernest MacMillan; and a copy of the publicity photo used by Heim for many of her programs.

Programs

Series consists of programs from performances by Emmy Heim, as well as various programs for performances by Heim's students at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto and for performances that she attended by her colleagues.

Musical compositions

Series consists of compositions and arrangements by Gena Branscombe, including published sheet music with inscriptions from the composer and manuscript copies of scores and parts.

Concert programmes

Series contains concert programmes dated from 1939-1958. Programmes reflect performances from Kathleen Parlow as well as the performances of the South Mountain String Quartet, Parlow String Quartet, Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Canadian Trio, and many of other performers. Concert programmes are from a variety of locations worldwide including the United States, England, Finland, Belgium, Germany, Poland, and many other locations. Programmes are in black and white and colour. Some programmes have gold gilt edges as well as other visually interesting features.

Sheet music collection

Series consists of annotated sheet music and manuscript copies of sheet music in Harry Culley's hand, which were predominantly used for performances by the Black and White Spotters (Harry and Ida Culley's two-piano, four-hands duo). Many pieces include precise timings, as the Culley's frequently performed on radio shows on CKCL, CFRB, and CBC from the 1930s to 1950s. Series also includes some dance band music used by Harry Culley in his positions as conductor of the Royal York Orchestra (1929-1930) and Music Director at the Royal Alexandra Theatre (1948-1955).

Daybooks

Series consists of Kathleen Parlow's diaries for each year from 1905 until 1960, with the exception of 1924, 1927, and 1955-1957, and 4 notebooks. The notebooks include her record catalogue, repertoire lists, handwritten recital programs, and her appointment diary (1905-1941).

File contains scores, notes, and scripts for electronic music compositions by Myron Schaeffer.
