Edward Johnson collection

File contains letters collected by or given to Edward Johnson from Georges Bizet, Claude Debussy (photograph), Gaetano Donizetti, Jenny Lind, Giacomo Meyerbeer, Adelina Patti/Giuseppe Verdi, Ignacy Paderewski (signed photograph), Giacomo Puccini, and Richard Wagner. Unless otherwise indicated, all items are autograph letters, signed (ALS).

Arlidge, Joseph Churchill

Photographs

Series consists of promotional and personal photographs of J. Churchill Arlidge, his family, and groups to which he belonged, including the Independent Order of Foresters (Arlidge was the High Organist); Christ Church at Deer Park, Toronto, Ontario; and a Grand Jury in 1907, which was appointed to investigate and make recommendations regarding public institutions and services in Toronto.

Family records and correspondence

Series consists of copies of photographs and documents pertaining to Johnstone's family. Documents include correspondence between Mary F. Williamson and Helmut Kallmann of the National Library of Canada; a copy of the petition for divorce filed by Catherine (McGregor) Johnstone against her husband John Francis Johnstone, which was later withdrawn (January 8, 1979); a copy of an article in the Toronto Star (November 26, 1927) regarding Amelia Hart and her seven husbands (Johnstone was the fourth); a copy of a letter from Mary F. Williamson to Professor Carl Morey at the Faculty of Music, University of Toronto regarding Johnstone and performances of his songs; a copy of Johnstone's obituary (February 25, 1913); and a copy of scanned portraits of Johnstone. The series also consists of electronic records, including scanned images from the Johnstone family photo album (ca. 1900).

The collection includes photographs of various Canadian and European musicians, including various photographs of Canadian Opera Company productions from the late 1980s and early 1990s, autographs from various opera singers and musicians from the late-nineteenth century, three scrapbooks with newspaper clippings and programs, and a collection of songs published in the Toronto Evening Telegram at the end of the nineteenth century.

Fonds consists of records created by John Beckwith during his career as a composer, writer, music critic, radio broadcaster, administrator, educator, and performer. Records include sketches, drafts, and manuscripts of his compositions and arrangements, as well as programs, posters, reviews, correspondence, recordings, and other materials from premieres and other performances of his works.

Fonds also includes records relating to Beckwith's work as a radio commentator and script writer for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC); music critic for the Toronto Star; professor and dean of the University of Toronto Faculty of Music; and writer of numerous lectures, articles, and books.
