Collection contains ephemera related to education in Ontario. This ephemera includes materials such as educational certificates, grade reports, teaching applications, contracts, meeting minutes, school accounts, student rolls, correspondence, inspection reports, examination papers and timetables, insurance policies, student assignments and workbooks, and class photographs.

This collection has been arranged into 9 series.

OISE Library

Letter by a School Master

File contains a letter written by a school master in 1826 describing the troubles of early school life.

File also contains a transcription of the letter created in 1957.

Workbooks

Subseries contains workbooks created by pupils in Ontario schools. These workbooks cover a range of subjects, and many of them contain graded work.

Student Work

Series contains work produced by students at Ontario schools from the mid-1800s to the mid-1900s. Student work includes compositions and examination papers written by students, artwork produced by students, and workbooks from across all subjects.

Series contains four subseries according to type of student work.

Simon Miller (Mathematics)

File contains 5 mathematical workbooks produced by Simon Miller (1826-1907) between 1839 and 1843. File also contains a ohotograph of Simon Miller and a letter from the donor, dated 1979.

Certificates

Series contains educational certificates, including certificates for passing entrance exams, grade promotion certificates, graduation certificates, teaching certifications, and grade reports.

Rosa Deroche

File contains a Second Class teaching certificate dated 7 May 1861, qualifying Rosa Deroche to teach in the United counties of Frontenac and Lennox and Addington.

File also contains a brief biography of Rosa Deroche and two letters from the donor.

School Administration

Series contains records related to the operation of schools. These records include meeting minutes, school accounts, student rolls, grades, correspondence, inspection reports, examination papers, contracts, insurance policies, leases, and bylaws.

Copy of Testimonials

File contains a copy of testimonials given between 1861 and 1868, which assert the fitness of John Seath for the position of Headmaster at Brampton Grammar School.

School Records - Brampton Grammar School

File contains a book belonging to Geoff Robinson, appointed Headmaster to Brampton Grammar School in August 1869. The records in this book date from 1869 to 1871 and include statistics, class lists, grades, and examination schedules.

S. S. No. 1 Tuckersmith (Art)

File contains a copy of the "Drawing Book used in the Normal Schools for Ontario and the Boys and Girls' Model Schools." This workbook was completed by the pupils of S. S. No. 1 in Tuckersmith, Ontario, in 1871. Individual pupils contributing to this workbook is identified on each work.

George Malcolm

File contains an Ontario Normal School Certificate of Attendance and Aptitude to Teach, issued to George Malcolm on January 15, 1872. This certificate functioned as a Second Class teaching certificate.

File also contains two scraps of paper with notes pertaining to this certificate.

File contains an application for a teaching position submitted by Isabella Campbell to the trustees of the Watford Public School in 1874.

Eliza Jane Carroll

File contains an application for a teaching position submitted by Eliza Carroll on behalf of her daughter Eliza Jane to the trustees of the Watford Public School in 1874.

File contains an application for a teaching position submitted by John Mitchell to the trustees of the Watford Public School in 1874.

Reports to Watford Public School Trustees by Teachers and Principals

File contains reports submitted to the Watford Public School trustees by teachers and principals. These reports contained information regarding pupil enrollments, attendance, the state of school property, and materials or equipment required by the school.

The reports in this file were written in 1874, 1885, 1888, 1890, and 1903. One additional report is undated.

Teaching Contracts

Subseries contains teaching contracts created between 1874 and 1946. These contracts include both completed contract forms as well as fully handwritten contracts, and contain information about the period of employment, salary, and terms and conditions of the teacher's hire.

William James Leech

File contains a handwritten contract between William James Leech and the Public School Trustees of School Section No. 6 in the township of Warwick, village of Watford, in the County of Lambton, signed January 26, 1874.

School Accounts - Watford Public School Board

File contains a number of school accounts submitted to the trustees of the Watford Public School Board between 1874 and 1900. These accounts are related to a variety of matters, including janitorial services; firewood; window glass; repairing clocks, desks, windows, and pumps; stovepipes; stationery; chalk; printing; lumber; plastering; hardware; planting trees; telegrams; supply teaching; and accommodations for board meetings.

File contains a handwritten contract between Isabella Campbell and the Trustees of School Section No. Six in the Township of Warwick, County of Lambton, signed January 3, 1874.

Mary W. Lamb

File contains three handwritten contracts between Mary W. Lamb and the Public School Trustees of Section No. Six in the Township of Warwick in the County of Lambton, signed December 14, 1875, December 18, 1876, and August 20, 1877.

Martha Corry

File contains two handwritten teaching contracts between Martha Corry and the Public School Trustees of Section No. Six in the Township of Warwick in the County of Lambton, signed November 2, 1875 and December 18, 1876.

William Johnston

File contains a teaching contract between William Johnston and the Trustees of School Section No. Six in the Township of Warwick and Village of Watford, signed November 2, 1875.

Duties of Janitor for Watford Public School for 1875

File contains a page listing the duties assigned to the janitor at the Watford Public School in 1875. Duties include lighting fires to warm the classrooms and removing ashes from the stoves, ensuring an adequate supply of wood, sweeping, dusting, and scrubbing the privies.

J. E. A. Shard

File contains a handwritten teaching contract between J. E. A. Shard and the Trustees of the Public School in the village of Watford in the County of Lambton, signed August 20, 1875.

Indenture of Lease - Temperance Hall

File contains a handwritten rental agreement between the Trustees of School Section No. 6 in the Village of Watford and the Trustees of Watford Shield Lodge No. 394, Independent Order of Good Templars, for the rental of the "Temperance Hall" building.

Janet Grieve

File contains a Pupil's Certificate from the Public Schools of the County of Waterloo issued April 28, 1880, certifying that Janet Grieve has passed the promotion examination and was being promoted to the Senior Third Class.

Helen Butters

File contains a certificate issued to Helen Burns by the Public School Board of Niagara Falls in June 1882, certifying that she had passed the high school entrance exam.

Miscellaneous Papers - County of Wellington

File contains records from the county of Wellington. Records include examination papers from 1882, a booklet containing songs for school holidays, and a blank certificate issued to schools by school inspectors for maintaining schools in excellent condition.

L. Anderson

File contains an application for a teaching position submitted by L. Anderson to the trustees of the Watford Public School in 1883.

Franklin Kenward
