Kindergarten Teacher Training collection

The collection contains materials related to Froebelian kindergarten education, practiced in Ontario in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Materials include sample workbooks demonstrating Froebel's Occupations, teachers' lesson books, certificates, and photographs. The collection also includes donation paperwork to provide more context about the creation of the collection.

The collection has been arranged into series based on creator.

OISE Kindergarten Teacher Training Collection

Florence M. Funnell

Series contains nine books produced by Florence M. Funnell as a student teacher in the late 1890s. These books include classroom notes and samples of Froebelian work.

Drawing

File contains a hardcover graph paper notebook with samples of Froebelian drawing designs.

Cutting

File contains one accordion book with increasingly complex patterns pasted in cut glossy paper.

Weaving

File contains one accordion book with increasingly complex patterns of glossy weaved paper strips pasted in.

Sewing

File contains one accordion book with perforated pages, sewn in colored thread to create patterns and pictures on each page.

Folding

Eleanor Savage

Series contains two books of classroom notes and two sets of sample cards produced by Eleanor Lyman Savage (1866-1961) as a student Kindergartener in 1894.

Sewing Cards

File contains 46 circular cards, each with a picture or design sewn on, produced by Eleanor Savage as a student Kindergartener.

Cutting Cards

File contains 23 9"x9" cards, each with patterns made of cut paper pasted on it, created by Eleanor Savage as a student Kindergartener.

Classroom Notes

File contains two hardcover notebooks containing classroom notes on Froebel's method, both dated September 1894.

Alice and Lilian Dent

Series contains records and sample work produced by Lilian and Alice Dent, who worked as Kindergartners in Toronto for many years. Lilian Dent took her kindergarten training in New York (1898-1899), while Alice Dent was trained later in Toronto. Series includes certificates, photographs, pamphlets, notebooks, and samples for Froebelian work.

Isabel Harris

Series contains three books produced by Isabel Harris as a student Kindergartener in London, Ontario during the 1901-1902 academic year. Series also contains a copy of the 1906 edition of Froebel's "Mother Play and Nursery Songs."
