Collected audio cassettes

Sub-series consists of 54 audio cassettes collected by Nouwen. The sub-series contains commercial and non-commercial audio cassettes.

Reading, research and reference notes

Sub- series consists of 9 files containing typed and handwritten notes related to Watson's personal and professional reading and academic research, including extensive bibliographic references found on loose paper, cigarette packages and scraps of paper. The sub-series has been arranged chronologically where possible, however, due to the ephemeral nature of much of the material and the tendency of Watson not to date her notes, the bulk of the material can only be given broad date ranges.

Reading notebooks

Sub- series consists of 40 files containing reading and research notes in notebooks, some of which can be dated. These notebooks relate to Watson's reading notes created in the course of her personal and professional activities as a writer, Ph.D. student and professor of English. These notebooks tend to contain brief page references and quotations from books, journal articles and magazine columns. There appears to be a gap in the record, with little or no material from the 1970s. Some notebooks contain news clippings and ephemera.

Administrative records

  • CA ON00389 F4-7-2
  • Subseries

This trip could possibly have been for research into schools for a potential doctoral program in Theology.

The material has been arranged chronologically. Box 258 contains cheque books from October 1989 to August 1994 and deposit books from January 1987 to December 1992. Box 259 contains cheque books from September 1994 to September 1996 and deposit books from January 1993 to August 1995.

Expenses files

Sub-series consists of material regarding Nouwen's expenses. The files were started by Nouwen's staff after his arrival at L'Arche Daybreak in August 1986. Statements, invoices, and receipts (some with notes) were collected according to category and month. Categories included automobile, business meals, donations, food and entertainment, gifts to individuals, income tax payments, miscellaneous, office supplies, office supplies and equipment, personal, photocopies and photographs, postage/courier, promotion, purchase services, telephone, temporary help, and travel.
It is believed that the expenses files were filed with the General Financial Files during their active year. The files were arranged alphabetically by expense category and by month within each category. At the end of the year each category was bundled together and the General Financial File folders were reused. Therefore, the expenses files for 1995 and 1996 can be found in the General Financial Files and this sub-series consists of the expenses files from August 1986 to December 1994. They are arranged chronologically by year, alphabetically by category within each year, and chronologically by month within each category. The exception being 1986 where months August to December were bundled together.
Every month a summary of expenses was sent by Nouwen's office to Nouwen's personal accountant, Joe Sarno. These summaries can be found in the Personal Accountant Files and the General Financial Files. All expenses were also recorded in the Ledgers and can be found in the Ledgers sub-series.

Personal accountant files

  • CA ON00389 F4-6-3

  • June 1981 - April 1995, predominant January 1989 - December 1994
  • Part of Henri Nouwen fonds

Sub-series consists of material sent by Nouwen's personal accountant (Joe Sarno) to Nouwen's office at Daybreak in January 1996. Includes the 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, and 1994 income tax returns and supporting documentation. Also includes permanent reference material from Nouwen's retirement accounts, health insurance, 1995 Visa statements, and the US Internal Revenue Service.
Joe Sarno was Nouwen's personal accountant from the mid-1970s until April 1995. He was based in Connecticut and became Nouwen's accountant when Nouwen was at Yale Divinity School. Sarno was responsible for Nouwen's income tax returns, American bank accounts, credit cards, and retirement funds. It is assumed that he was responsible for the bulk of Nouwen's financial activities before Nouwen's move to L'Arche Daybreak in 1987. However, since legislation only requires records be kept for seven years, the majority of the records he sent to Daybreak only go back to 1989. Completing Nouwen's 1994 tax return was Sarno's last responsibility as Nouwen's accountant.
According to correspondence found in box 248 file 1438, Sarno sent two boxes of material to Nouwen's office containing income tax records and permanent reference material. The material was found in large manilla envelopes with Sarno's handwriting on the outside describing the envelopes' contents. The envelopes were bound with elastics and did not appear to have been opened since being sent to Nouwen's office in January 1996.

The ledgers were used to keep track of Nouwen's expenses chronologically and by categories between August 1986 and April 1997. Categories in the ledgers include automobile, business meals, donations, food and entertainment, gifts to individuals, income tax payments, miscellaneous, office supplies, office supplies and equipment, personal, photocopies and photographs, postage/courier, promotion, purchase services, telephone, temporary help, and travel. Nouwen staff members involved with the material include Peter Weiskel, Connie Ellis, Lydia Banducci and Margaret Sutton.

Materials regarding Seward Hiltner

Sub-series consists of articles and materials collected by Nouwen on Seward Hiltner. Materials were likely collected while Nouwen was at Notre Dame University and at Yale Divinity School. The material was likely collected for use in courses that Nouwen was teaching from 1967 to 1975 at Notre Dame, the Joint Pastoral Institute in Amsterdam, Catholic Theological Institute of Utrecht, and Yale. The courses were on the topic of Pastoral Care. The material might also have informed Nouwen's Theology degree, but this needs more research. In a letter in the file titled "Nouwen correspondence regarding Hiltner material" Nouwen writes, "I am presently involved in research concerning Seward Hiltner, and am trying to collect as many of his writings as possible."
Seward Hiltner (1909 - 1984) was an American Presbyterian minister who lived his life and work focused on the interface between psychology and theology. He believed that the two disciplines are vital to each other and that together they were a decisive force in shaping pastoral care and counseling. In addition to many other positions, Hiltner was the theological consultant for the Menninger Clinic as well as executive secretary for the Council of Clinical Training of Theological Students (founded by Boisen in 1930).

There are three files with a collection of articles (14081, 14082, 14083). These articles were likely given to Nouwen and so were filed with resources when they came in with letters.
