  • Part of Henri Nouwen fonds

Sub-series consists of published articles written by Nouwen between 1960 and 1996. A majority of the articles are dated between 1975 and 1996 probably because in 1975 Nouwen began transferring the articles for storage at Yale. Articles from church newsletters and other sources with limited publication are also included. In addition to featuring unique writings, the articles also represent published material that has been excerpted, condensed, adapted and reprinted from Nouwen's books, articles, and conference speeches. This sub-series contains only those articles written by Nouwen which he collected and does not contain all of his published articles as is evident by several incomplete article series.
The files are arranged chronologically. Each file features one unique published article although photocopies of newspapers as well as business cards and letters indicating the source of the articles are also included. Each file/article has been described at the item level.

Articles co-authored by Nouwen

Sub-series consists of published articles co-written by Nouwen between 1970 and 1986. Specific books excerpted include Intimacy, Aging, and Compassion.

Ave Maria Press files

Sub-series consists of five files which deal with Nouwen's personal and professional dealings with Ave Maria Press, a publishing company located in Notre Dame, Indiana. Much of the correspondence is between Nouwen or his assistants and Eugene S. Geissler, Book Editor or Frank Cunningham, Editor for Ave Maria Press. Specific Nouwen publications mentioned in the files include In Memoriam, With Open Hands, Out of Solitude, Compassion, Love in a Fearful Land, and audio cassettes A Spirituality of Waiting, Aging and Ministry, Marriage and Ministry and Spirituality and the Family.

Material such as bank books, chequebook receipts and statement updates from the Bank of Montreal was deaccessioned as it did not contain material of significant evidential or informational value.

Book reviews

  • CA ON00389 F4-9-4
  • Subseries
  • 1972 - 1996, predominant 1981 - 1996
  • Part of Henri Nouwen fonds

Sub-series consists of published articles as well as bookstore advertising, and transcripts of radio reviews regarding Nouwen's books, audio cassettes, and booklets. Also included are book reviews mentioning Nouwen's forewords and a book of which Nouwen was a contributing author. The articles are in various formats including entire publications, clippings, and photocopies as originally saved by Nouwen. This sub-series contains only those articles which Nouwen or his office collected.
In an attempt to re-establish a system similar to that originated by Nouwen, the Archives created one file to represent each reviewed book, etc., combining the various translations for a single book in the single file. On occasion, articles were photocopied by the Archives staff should more than one of Nouwen's books be mentioned; the copies were distributed to the appropriate book review files.

Book, art and periodical purchases, loans, subscriptions and donations

Sub-series consists of 72 files of receipts and invoices from book dealers, publishers, art dealers and periodicals regarding purchases by Watson of books, pamphlets, archival material, subscriptions and works of art. Also includes correspondence with art galleries regarding the loan of works owned by Watson and her husband for various exhibits, as well as tax receipts regarding financial support Watson gave to various small literary journals.

Sub-series consists of hard and soft cover books or booklets written by Nouwen or containing Nouwen's words, published between 1969 and 1996. The Archives has a variety of editions, printings and translations of his books. It is not certain how Nouwen obtained most of the English versions since, other than a handful of presentation copies, few were personally inscribed to him. Although it may be presumed that some were publisher gifts, since many of the books still have their price tags, it is possible that they were purchased by Nouwen or his associates.

Expenses files

Sub-series consists of material regarding Nouwen's expenses. The files were started by Nouwen's staff after his arrival at L'Arche Daybreak in August 1986. Statements, invoices, and receipts (some with notes) were collected according to category and month. Categories included automobile, business meals, donations, food and entertainment, gifts to individuals, income tax payments, miscellaneous, office supplies, office supplies and equipment, personal, photocopies and photographs, postage/courier, promotion, purchase services, telephone, temporary help, and travel.
It is believed that the expenses files were filed with the General Financial Files during their active year. The files were arranged alphabetically by expense category and by month within each category. At the end of the year each category was bundled together and the General Financial File folders were reused. Therefore, the expenses files for 1995 and 1996 can be found in the General Financial Files and this sub-series consists of the expenses files from August 1986 to December 1994. They are arranged chronologically by year, alphabetically by category within each year, and chronologically by month within each category. The exception being 1986 where months August to December were bundled together.
Every month a summary of expenses was sent by Nouwen's office to Nouwen's personal accountant, Joe Sarno. These summaries can be found in the Personal Accountant Files and the General Financial Files. All expenses were also recorded in the Ledgers and can be found in the Ledgers sub-series.

Family papers

Sub-series consists of papers Nouwen collected over the years relating to his family. Material has been organized in chronological order.

General financial files

Sub-series consists of Nouwen's general financial files kept by his staff between 1980 and 1997. Includes material regarding bank accounts, credit cards, expenses, financial statements, frequent flyer programs, income from donations, honorariums, royalties and stipend, income tax, car, health and travel insurance and RRSP/retirement funds. Includes applications, correspondence, forms, informational pamphlets and booklets, invoices, newsletters, receipts, reports, and statements. Photographs accompany some correspondence (none of which are of Nouwen).
The files have been grouped chronologically according to the Nouwen staff member(s) responsible for the creation of the majority of the file. There are four groupings: files 1270-1281 consist of material from 1980 to 1986 created predominantly by Carol Plantinga and Peter Weiskel; files 1282-1303 consist material from 1986 to 1995 predominantly created by Connie Ellis; files 1304-1311 consist of material from 1984 to 1993 predominantly created by Lydia Banducci; and files 1312-1404 consist of material from 1985 to 1997 predominantly created by Margaret Sutton. Within each chronological grouping the material is arranged alphabetically by file title. There is also one file containing financial invoices, receipts, and financial statements from the period of 1956 - 1967.
