Records relating to teaching

Series consists of records, 1987-2003, relating to courses and seminars Ng taught, primarily at Emmanuel College/Toronto School of Theology, as well committee and academic content work done there. Material includes correspondence, reports, course proposals, curricula, memoranda, notes, research material, reading lists, minutes, surveys and thesis reviews.

Correspondence and subject files

Series consists of letters and subject files related to a variety of topics including Ray's interest in First Nations and settlers and refugees, as well as personal correspondence.

Correspondence

Series consists of academic, professional, personal, and family correspondence, 1947-1986. Correspondence with Robson's student, Margaret Atwood, and his graduate supervisor, A.S.P. Woodhouse is included in various files.

General papers

Sub-series consists of files containing predominantly correspondence, which reflects Dr. Love’s various activities as part of the Victoria University /University of Toronto community, including interaction with the administration, the English Department, the Writer-in-Residence program and the Margaret Ray and Florence Pratt Award committee.

Correspondence

Series consists of incoming and outgoing general and specific correspondence, 1856-1887, re a wide range of academic and University administrative subjects, and family correspondence, 1887-1962, after Nelles' death. Correspondents include Egerton Ryerson, J.J. Maclaren, J.G. Hodgins and Isaac Brock Aylesworth.

Despite the fact that Nelles was apparently an avid letter writer, his correspondence comprises only one and a half boxes of the collection. As Nelles explained in a letter to J.G. Hodgins, he made a practice of discarding most of the letters which he received, making exceptions only for those of great personal significance. As a result, the bulk of the surviving correspondence was preserved by chance or through the efforts of other people. The letters span the years 1846–1887; they are organized chronologically and, when the volume warrants, by correspondents such as J.G. Hodgins, Egerton Ryerson, J.J. Maclaren, and Samuel Rose. An attempt has been made to document the thrust of each letter in the file listings. Although the letters touch on a number of subjects, the main theme of the correspondence is undoubtedly the "university question". The letters outline the development of the federation concept and the responses it evoked from the university community. One can gain insight into the day-to-day activities and tensions of Victoria College, and the precarious financial position of the college emerges clearly. Letters from old college friends such as Daniel Martindale, R.C. Pitman, and J.G. Hodgins reveal Nelles' interests as well as his capacity for warm and lasting relationships.

The correspondence also includes several letters to Mrs. Nelles following her husband's death and the correspondence of Professors Nathanael Burwash and A.R. Bain regarding the Nelles Memorial Fund. In additon, there are several files of letters dated in the 1950's and 1960's which chronicle some of the research into the Nelles' family history carried out by a descendent, F.C. Gullen. A file of notes made by Gullen contains a sketch map of Mount Pleasant, a typescript of a family history, and assorted family trees. A photograph of Nelles' birthplace was transferred to the Nelles file in the Archives' photograph collection.

Series consists of predominantly incoming but including outgoing correspondence, 1915-1923, relating to teaching/finances/administration at Victoria University, church and educational matters, personal affairs, family (includes posthumous letters), and social issues.

Series consists of incoming and outgoing correspondence, 1912-1949: correspondents include academic colleagues and family, and the correspondence is concerned with, among a variety of subjects, the situation at Victoria University, lectures, addresses, theological and moral questions, family matters, Brown's appointment to Yale University, and his Class of 1907 alumni events.

Series consists of minutes of Belleville Division of the Board for the Examination of Candidates and Probationers for the Ministry, 1868-1869; minutes and other records re probationers of the Conference Board of Examiners, 1875-1902; minutes of District meetings, 1903-1923, 1925; minutes of Faculty of Theology,1873-1881, 1912-1928; minutes of joint meetings of Faculty of Theology with the faculty of Knox College (United Church) and later Union Theological College, 1925-1928; and reports, 1872- 1875, curricula and degree requirements, n.d., 1874, and survey, 1899 ; book containing signatures of honorary Doctors of Divinity, 1912-1927.

Records of the Board of Regents

Series consists of 5 sub-series that include the records created by the Board of Regents (minutes, reports, notes) and its preceding entity, the Victoria College Board as well as the records of the Chairman of the Board and the Secretary of the Board. Also contains records received by the Board including correspondence and reports and records related to arbitration related to the move from Cobourg to Toronto.

Minutes and related records of the Board of Regents

Sub-series consists of the minutes and related records of the Board of Regents of Victoria University. In the earlier records, university federation is a dominant subject as well as the move from Cobourg to Toronto . Also included are the minutes of other committees, including the executive committee, and a building committee concerned with women's residences, and minutes of a special meeting concerning the University Bill.

Currently the Board of Regents meets four times a year, which includes a Strategy Day

Series consists of A.B.B. Moore's student records including his examination results from Union Theological College, Montreal, 1928–1930, and lecture notes from Oxford University, 1931.

Minutes and related records of the Victoria College Board

Series consists of minutes (including extracts), notes and drafts, reports and other records of the Victoria College Board. Also includes minutes of the annual meetings of ministers of the Wesleyan Methodist Church to elect Board and Officers of the College, 1862-1866. Also consists of a book created in 1869 out of the controversy between Dr. I. B. Aylesworth and some members of the Victoria College Board regarding the amount and payment of funds raised to pull the College out of debt: the book contains correspondence, resolutions, and financial statements, 1862-1869; printed statement regarding the controversy made to the Board by Dr. Aylesworth, 1873.

Records of Paul Anthony Wilson Wallace

Series consists of diaries, journals, composition books, correspondence, manuscripts, and publication regarding Paul A.W. Wallace's career as a writer and teacher, as well as a lot of documentation about his life as a soldier in World War I, and about Go Home Bay and the Madawaska Club, a cottage community associated with the University of Toronto. Also included are school work and manuscripts of "magazines" written and illustrated by Paul and his friends as children.

Series consists of records relating to Johnston's early academic life, 1946-1961, including her attendance at Brantford Public School, Brantford Collegiate Institute and Vocational School, and Victoria College, and her employment seeking activities upon graduation. Records include report cards, diplomas, commencement programs, residence room assignment, tuition receipt, correspondence from Kingsley Joblin, invitations, award information and programs, a programme for a Victoria College Dramatic Society performance of Thieves' Carnival by Jean Anouilh including a mask, awards programmes and commencement programmes.

Student registration cards include: name, address, course, home address, Presbytery, Conference, year of study, church attended in Toronto, courses taken (no marks), degree.

Sub-series consists of minutes and other records, 1966-2005, of non-Library Victoria University bodies, including the Margaret Ray and Florence Pratt Committee, Archives Management Committee, Committees of Emmanuel College Council, President's Advisory Committee on Staff Relations, Victoria College Council, the Board of Regents, the Senate, and the President’s Office, 1966–1999.

Records related to the Chancellor and Chancellor's council of Victoria University

The sub-series consists of records related to the search and installation of chancellors as well as congratulatory messages from various institutions to Dr. Sang Chul Lee, Norman Jewison and Dr. Carole Sandra Taylor for being named Chancellors of Victoria University. Also contains records related to the Chancellor's Council and its committees.

Series consists of files of Directors Eva Kushner, Roseann Runte, Brian Merrilees, 1989-2001, including Advisory Board minutes and other records, Management Board minutes and other records, annual reports, financial statements, subject/correspondence files relating to various NFC activities as well as to Collected Works matters, including the appointment of staff and files relating to the applications of individual fellows/associates and visiting scholars.

Governance and Meeting Minutes

Series consists of meeting minutes and agendas for the Victoria Women's Association, previously named the Barbara Heck Memorial Association, and the Victoria Women's Residence and Educational Association. Meeting minutes can include handouts, reports, and other materials distributed at meetings. This series also contains governance materials such as constitutions, by-laws, and duties of the association.

Records relating to teaching

Series consists of lectures and addresses, 1946-1952, and lectures (including drafts and plans), and research and teaching notes, 1924-1951.

Correspondence

Series consists of personal correspondence as well as official correspondence of the Principal of Emmanuel College and letters of tribute to Alfred Gandier.
