UTSC Photographic Services fonds

The UTSC Photographic Services fonds covers the years of approximately 1964 and 1966 to 2008. The collection represents an invaluable visual history of the University of Toronto Scarborough campus and is made up almost entirely of photographic materials – negatives, contact sheets, slides, and prints.

Photographs in the collection from the 1970s to 1994 are attributed to David Harford and photographs from 1994 onward are attributed to Ken Jones. Photographs cover a broad range of subjects, such as the buildings and grounds of UTSC, campus events, faculty, staff, students, and much more.

Material is arranged into the following series:

The collection consists of movie posters, ads, trading cards, postcards, books, magazines and journals, related to Frank Buck (Frank Howard Buck (1884-1950), a renowned American hunter, animal collector, film director, actor author and producer. The collection also consists of material related to zoo displays and architecture, catalogues and books related to zoo and animal collecting, photographs off various zoo related animals found in different parts of America and a board game. The material is divided into five series:

The fonds serves as a representative sample of the activities carried out, and the relationships engendered, during A.F.W. Plumptre's tenure as principal of Scarborough College from 1965 to 1972. Both official papers and personal documents are included. Official documents include: reports, correspondence, transcripts of speeches, and seating plans. Personal documents include: invitations, cards, photograph albums, clippings, publications, books, and artifacts.

The fonds reflects Chelvanayakam’s career as a political leader of the Sri Lankan Tamil community, as well as documenting the daily operations of the Federal Party.

The fonds documents important political events in Sri Lanka from the 1950s to the 1970s and provides witness to the struggles faced by Sri Lankan Tamils.

The fonds also contains records relating to his family, background, and memorial material collected after his death by his wife, Emily Grace Chelvanayakam. The fonds is organized into three series and covers the periods of 1933-1937, 1939-1940, 1944-1988, with the bulk of the material being from the 1960s and 1970s.

Personal records include correspondence, personal items, financial and estate documentation, and other material. Professional records include office files, party records, correspondence, and documentation. Memorial material includes posters, newspaper clippings, and a book of condolences. The collection is comprised of menus from around the world featuring a variety of cuisines including Afghan, American, Argentinian, Armenian, Asian, Bangladeshi, Brazilian, Burmese, Cambodian, Caribbean, Chinese (Peking, Szechuan, Shanghai, Yunnan, Mandarin, Cantonese, Hunan and Jiangnan), Colombian, Cuban, Dutch, Ecuadorian, Egyptian, European, Filipino, Finnish, French, Hong Kong style, Indian, Indochinese, Indonesian, Islamic, Israeli, Italian, Jamaican, Japanese, Korean, Laotian, Latin American, Lebanese, Malaysian, Mediterranean, Mexican, Middle Eastern, Mongolian, Moroccan, Mughlai, Nepalese, Pakistani, Pan-Asian, Peruvian, Russian, Scandinavian, Singaporean, Southwestern, Spanish, Taiwanese, Thai, Tibetan, Turkish, Venezuelan, Vietnamese, seafood and vegetarian.

Menus types included placemat menus, single sheet menus, trifold and four fold menus, five fold, seven fold and menus in booklet style. Some menus are laminated while others are in vinyl enclosures. Menus range from take away and delivery, to eat in and include wine lists, menus for cafes, breakfast menus and menus for cafeteria lunches.

The material is divided into Series 1 Menus. The series is divided into 6 subseries: Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, Oceania and South America.

Spiller, Harley J.

Brazilian Menu collection

Collection consists of menus from various regions of Brazil. Restaurants are located in Sobra-Loja, Rio de Janeiro, Londrina, Sao Paulo, Leblon, Bahia, and Sao Lourenco. Bar fare, breakfast menus, steakhouse, hamburger house, and pan-American cuisine are just some types of dishes and restaurant represented.

A portion of the menus are from hotels. Menu types include trifold, booklet, seven-fold, placemat and bookmark style. Several menus are laminated or in vinyl enclosures. A portion of the menus have prices written in by hand in various colours of ink and are stained.

Freeman, Matthew (Doctor)

Kurumbasiddy Era Kanagaratnam collection

The Kurumbasiddy Era Kanagaratnam collection consists of the lifework of Mr. R. Kanagaratnam who collected Tamil and English newspaper clippings and manuscripts related to political and cultural affairs of Eelam Tamils for almost six decades under the institutional name of the International Tamil Archives.

Kanagratnam’s collections document more than a hundred years of Tamil polity, starting from 1889 to December 2013. Although the main part of his collections is newspaper clippings, there are also published and unpublished articles related to social and cultural heritage of the nation of Eelam Tamils. 

Newspaper clippings from Morning Star, The Hindu Organ, Eezhakeasari (1930 to 1957), Veerakeasari, Chuthanthiran (since 1952), The Daily News, Sun, Saturday Review (full volume), Eezha-Naadu, Chari-nikar (full volume), Tribune (full volume), Thisai (full volume), Thina-murasu (from 1st issue to 2002), Dhiniapathi, Sunday Times, Sunday Observer, Thinakkural, Chinthaa-ma’ni, Island, Chudar-o’li and Hotspring are some of the collections in the International Tamil Archives. His collections also include 10,000 published and unpublished articles, manuscripts, and around 10,000 cartoons.

Spiller, Harley J.

Greg Fitz fonds

The fonds contains photographs taken and developed by Greg Fitz and document a first-hand account of student life on campus from 1972-1976, including campus and residence social life, student and campus events and dances, staff photographs, class registration, and the surrounding grounds of the Scarborough campus. The fonds includes photographs of many events at the St. George campus as well, including the annual downtown Homecoming Parade, and other events with the Engineering Society, including Lady Godiva Memorial Band events, as what had previously been a rivalry between the Scarborough campus and the society later became an alliance. The fonds also includes textual material such as U of T songbooks, stationery, and magazines mentioning Greg Fitz.

The Scarborough College Student Council Darkroom opened in 1972 when Greg Fitz, together with the student council, proposed a budget to Scarborough College administration to build the darkroom. The darkroom was located one floor under the Meeting Place in room S-203, next to CKSR, the campus radio station office. The darkroom was used for black and white processing but was also equipped for colour work and Cibachrome. During some years, in order to use the free facilities of the darkroom, students were required to provide Balcony Square, the student newspaper, with at least two photographic prints to be published in the newspaper.

Fitz, Greg

Sandford Borins fonds

The fonds covers Dr. Borins’ research on film, history, biography, and other topics relating to business, information technology, automobile manufacturing, and financial trading. Types of documents include Dr. Borins’ notes and summaries, drafts of writings, articles, and course notes.

The aforementioned research resulted in the publication of Dr. Borin’s book titled Negotiating Business Narratives: Fables of the Information Technology, Automobile Manufacturing, and Financial Trading Industries published by Palgrave Pivot in 2018.

The fonds covers the years of 1998, 2006-2014, while predominantly covering the years of 2007-2014. The fonds documents the work and activities of David C. Onley during his tenancy as the 28th Lieutenant Governor of Ontario from September 5, 2007 to September 23, 2014.

The fonds contains six series:

General files are comprised of reference and research files. Articles and clippings contains newspaper articles, publications and interviews that mention David C. Onley, as well as articles of interest collected for him. Correspondence includes outgoing, incoming, and internal office correspondence. Daily records comprise the bulk of the fonds and contain calendars and detailed textual and photographic documentation of Onley’s activities as Lieutenant Governor. The series also contains electronic records which are copies of the textual and photographic material within the daily calendars and daily activities files. Guest books contain bound books with signatures of visitors to the Lieutenant Governor’s events. Awards and regalia contains material and objects bestowed upon David C. Onley such as certificates and university regalia from convocation ceremonies and honorary degrees.
