Samuel Hollander fonds

These accessions of personal records provide a fairly complete representation of Samuel Hollander’s professional life as an academic. The accessions cover his entire career from his student days at the London School of Economics to his retirement from the University of Toronto in 1998 and his appointment at Ben-Gurion University in Beer-Sheva, Israel in 2000. Correspondence, found in the various series gives a rich commentary on his professional endeavours and gives a good overview of the debates surrounding Hollander’s work. Lecture notes and taped lectures document how his ideas were taught in the classroom and his Ph.D. files found in Series 5 show his dedication to the teaching and mentor roles for which he is so highly regarded.

Hollander, Samuel

Personal

Contains personal correspondence with family and friends, mainly documenting Hollander’s achievements including many congratulatory notes from colleagues regarding awards or the publication of his major works.

Correspondence and related documents also document his appointment as University Professor and the campaign beginning in 1991 to procure for him a Nobel Prize in Economics. Also documented are his appointments through the University ranks, his salary, retirement and the awarding of grants to support his research including activity reports and grant applications.

This series also contains records collected by Hollander over his academic and professional career, and includes various graduate school lecture notes, school transcripts, honorary degrees, scholarships, two manuscripts given to Hollander by H. D. Dickenson before his death; and a heavily annotated copy of David Ricardo’s book Principles of Political Economy which he kept separate from other professional and academic papers.

Filed at the beginning of each accession is his most updated C.V. at the time the records were acquired (see B1998-0027/001(1) and B2012-0018/001(1)). There is also a portrait of Hollander, to be found in B1998-0027/001P.

Nancy Howell fonds

Records in this fonds mainly document Nancy Howell’s research on the !Kung San of Botswana. Her nearly three years researching in the field with her anthropologist husband Richard Lee were formative to a lifetime of research on the !Kung San hunter gatherers. Included is much of her original data that has formed the basis of her research in this area as well as the basis of research collaboration with others. More than half of this fonds is her original data on the !Kung San from that 1960s field trip.
Her two main works that are well documented in this accession are Surviving Fieldwork: Health and Safety in Anthropological Fieldwork (1990) and Life Histories of the Dobe !Kung (2010). Her teaching and administrative roles at the University of Toronto are not documented in this accession.

Research files – Other projects

The principal research project in this series is described by Ms Winearls as “The mapping of western North America in the 19th century with particular reference to the De Fonte fantasy and the earlier ‘Sea of the West’ fantasy”. (The maps showed purported water routes between the west coast and the Northwest Passage or the central North American plains.) This project was begun in the early 1990s but not completed as planned and led to an article on one particular map, “Thomas Jefferys Map of Canada and the mapping of the western part of North America, 1750-1768’, that appeared in 1996. The second research project is on carto-bibliographic analysis and methodology re 18th century printed maps of North America [1].

The series begins with map bibliography & notes, consisting of preliminary bibliographic entries for Mer de l’Ouest/Riviere Longue de l’Ouest, and an early draft of a bibliography of maps relating to the De Fonte fantasy, followed by files of maps arranged by area: World, Arctic, Western hemisphere, North America, and Canada. There are also source files with notes, correspondence, and copies of documents, maps and other source material, covering De Fonte, early Canadian maps, and archival sources in British Columbia, the United States and Europe. Much of the photocopied material that has been retained is annotated. These files are followed by research notes and correspondence on Northwest-De Fonte and biographical sources, and on related maps, along with requests for microform and maps. Included are reproductive copies of maps and other copies.

The files for the research project on carto-bibliographic analysis and methodology re 18th century printed maps of North America include sample entries, copies of maps and published bibliographies and sources (largely annotated), along with bibliographical analyses and North American maps sources for analysis. Some oversized maps are included.

The series ends with Ms Winearls’ research on book illustration in Canada for the History of the Book in Canada project. Three volumes were planned under the general editorship of Patricia Lockhart Fleming and Yvan Lamonde, and they appeared between 2004 and 2007. Ms Winearls’ contribution was to the first volume. The files contain correspondence, contracts, notes, and source material. Drafts of the manuscript are in Series 8.

B2016-0009 contains research Ms Winearls did on Canadian bird artist J. Fenwick Lansdowne from 2000-2013. Included are original photographs of the artist, interviews, notes, compiled bibliography and exhibition list. There is also collected photocopies of ephemera relating to the artist, reviews of his works and exhibition catalogues. Finally, Winearls collected copies of correspondence and contracts between Lansdowne and his agent Bud Feheley (restricted to 2035).

B2022-0005 consists of research and working files related to Ms. Winearls research for her articles on another Canadian bird artist, Allan Cyril Brooks, and her Catalogue Raisonné of Brooks’ artwork. The records primarily contain notes and annotated copies of source materials related to Allan Brooks’ biography and chronology; auctions and sales of Brooks’ artwork; related bird artists such as Louis Agassiz Fuertes and George Lodge; critical articles about Brooks by bird artists; and Brooks’ correspondence from various archival sources (Blacker-Wood Library of Zoology at McGill University; British Columbia Archives/Royal British Columbia Museum; Canadian Museum of Nature in Ottawa; Natural History Museum in London, UK; Cornell University Library; Harvard Museum of Comparative Zoology; and the National Audubon Society in New York).

Some of the research files focus on special aspects and problems related to the Brooks’ catalogue including undated works; sketches, and his paintings and illustrations in The Condor, William Leon Dawson’s Birds of California, Birds of Washington, Howard Smith/ Domtar calendars, National Association of Audubon Societies (NAAS) educational leaflets, Recreation, the Taverner Birds of Western Canada, and other illustrated books. These files also include photographs of sketches and undated works as well as copies of loose sketches and one of Brook’s sketchbooks that were owned by J. Fenwick Lansdowne.

The remaining files within this series consist of correspondence, notes, art lists, and some photographs related to collections of Brooks’ art at Canadian institutions including the Glenbow Museum, Belkin Gallery, Greater Vernon Museum Archives, the Vernon Art Gallery, the Blacker-Wood Library of Zoology, and the Canadian Museum of Nature; American institutions including the Moore Laboratory of Zoology (MLZ)(Occidental College), UCLA, the Museum of Vertebrate Zoology (UC Berkeley), the San Diego Natural History Museum, Peabody Museum of Natural History, the Massachusetts Audubon Society Visual Arts Centre, the University of Michigan, Cornell University, Virginia Tech University, and Washington State University; and various private collections including the Allan Brooks Jr. Family Collection. Drafts of the Allan Brooks Catalogue and articles are in Series 7.

Oral history interview with Ikem Opara conducted by Ruth Belay

Ikem Opara, currently Director of National Learning Partnerships at the Rideau Hall Foundation, was an international student at UofT’s St. George campus. His active involvement at the University included executive roles with Black Students’ Association (BSA), playing Varsity football, and membership in organizations such as the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity, the African Students’ Association and the Nigerian Students’ Association. Opara describes the personal impact that these organizations had in forming deep social connections, while emphasizing throughout the interview their commitment to create spaces of belonging on campus that reflected both racial and ethnic identities. He recounts many of the BSA’s and Alpha Phi Alpha’s activities, including mentorship initiatives, talks, social events, and discusses their underlying goals, particularly regarding the strategic use of space to highlight Black presence at the University. He reflects on the BSA’s engagement in issues such as representation within curriculum and broader community activism around police violence in the city, while also reflecting on challenges faced at UofT.

Oral history interview with Dena Taylor conducted by Ruth Belay

Dr. Dena Bain Taylor, a retired faculty member in the Department of English at the University of Toronto, attended the University at its St. George campus as both an undergraduate and graduate student. While the interview touches on the early experiences Taylor had as a student, it focuses on the period between 1968 to 1973 when she was a resident of Rochdale College. She describes the foundation and structure of the residence, including identifying key individuals, concurrent initiatives, funding sources, and the external issues that shaped the residence. Throughout the interview, Taylor reflects on the philosophical underpinnings that were central to the collective ethos of the space and its genesis as a centre for experiential learning, activism, arts, spirituality, experimentation and place-making. The interview captures aspects of Rochdale’s impact, including the activities of involved individuals, the influence of American political thought, as well as the organizations and initiatives that were developed there. Taylor speaks to some of the issues that surfaced in the residence such as sexism, sexuality, and mental health, as well as how these issues were portrayed in the media. In discussing her own experiences and reflecting on the broader significance of the College, Taylor details and questions how the residence fundamentally challenged the status-quo.

Robert Allan Spencer fonds

This fonds documents the administrative and teaching duties of Robert Spencer, as a Professor Emeritus of History and a specialist in European history, especially German history in the 19th and 20th centuries. They also document his education and his participation in World War II; his extensive international research, publications and speaking engagements; as well as his involvement with professional associations and organizations such as the University of Toronto Contingent, Canadian Officers Training Corps (COTC), the International Studies Programme and the Graduate Centre for International Studies, Altantik-Brücke, and the Conference on Security and Co-operation in Europe (CSCE). Included is personal correspondence, correspondence with international organizations, government departments, embassies and consulates; lecture notes; manuscripts and addresses.

Also present are two sous-fonds. The first is the personal papers of his wife, Ruth Margaret Church Spencer, who served with the Women’s Royal Canadian Naval Service (WRENS) during World War II as a base librarian and afterwards as the first professional librarian at Canada House in London. The second consists of files compiled by Ralph Flenley, a specialist in German history and sometime chair of the Department of History: examination questions, student mark books, and drafts of an unpublished manuscript on Anglo-German relations.

Correspondence, minutes, memoranda, notes, reports, and press clippings documenting the activities of the Faculty of Arts and Science Constituency of the President's Council of the University of Toronto, as assembled by Professor Robert Spencer while a member of the Council. In addition to Council minutes and related material, there are files on several presidential advisory committees, the Advisory Planning Committee of the Board of Govemors, the University's Master Plan, the School of Hygiene, tenure (Haist Committee), and the Council's Sub-committee on Resource Planning. Included is material documenting the participation of professors C. B. Macpherson and J. B. Conacher.

Correspondence, memoranda, briefs, minutes, posters, architectural plans, maps, and press clippings documenting Spencer's role in various University administrative bodies including: the Board of Governors Property Committee, 1969 – 1972; the Program Committee of the Commission on University Government, 1969 – 1970; the President's Council, 1969 – 1970; the Committee on Accommodations and Facilities, 1969 – 1972; the Capital Planning Committee, 1971; the Sigmund Samuel Renovation Committee, 1972; Faculty of Arts and Science Library Committee 1967 – 1969; and the Library Council Executive Committee 1965 – 1969. Personal and biographical

This series contains material relating to Professor Spencer’s birth, childhood and later birthdays; childhood stories, plays, and poems; reunions and other post-graduate activities at McGill University and the University of Oxford; honours received; and files relating to the residences that he had owned. Also present are copies of his curriculum vitae, security documents regarding the Department of External Affairs, and material reflecting his long association with the Canadian military in the form of Remembrance Day ceremonies and VE-Day and other celebrations related to World War II.

Oral history interview with June Larkin conducted by Ruth Belay and Daniela Ansovini

Dr. June Larkin, former Director of Equity Studies and professor in the Women and Gender Studies Department, completed her graduate studies at Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE) in 1993. Larkin describes her involvement in the creation of OISE’s Sexual Harassment Caucus, a group formed to address sexual harassment at the institution through policy and education. With seventeen years of prior experience as an elementary school teacher, Larkin shares how this advocacy shifted her doctoral work to focus on sexual harassment in high schools and also led to developing educational toolkits and workshops to support school boards looking to implement their own policies. In discussing her research, community-based initiatives, and teaching, she reflects on the definition of activism and many forms it can take. Within the context of the Equity Studies Program more broadly, she notes the ways in which she and other professors have worked to respond to the shifting interest of students, particularly to support their engagement in issues at and beyond the University.

The fonds is arranged and described in ten series documenting Jack Chambers’ 50 year career as professor of linguistics, primarily at the University of Toronto, and his external activities as a forensic linguist, consultant and his passion for jazz. Series 1 contains personal records relating to his appointment, salary, and annual activity reports as a member of the faculty of the University of Toronto’s Centre (and later Department) of Linguistic Studies and also includes some personal correspondence. Series 2 relates to his administrative activities in the Department and the University. Correspondence is included in Series 3 and 4. Series 3 contains letters of reference and evaluation for students and colleagues. Series 4 contains more general correspondence with colleagues within and outside the University in the field of linguistics, with some correspondence predating his arrival at the University of Toronto. Series 5, Jazz, contains files of correspondence, manuscripts, research, reviews, evaluations and other records documenting his special interest in this subject. Series 6 documents his teaching activities and contains course files, examination questions and tests as well as student evaluations for some of the courses he has taught and correspondence with former students. Series 7, Consulting, contains files relating to his activities as a forensic linguistic and consultant in criminal and civil court cases, as well as written testimony for Trademark cases. Records relating to his publication activities will be found in Series 8 and 9. The majority of the files of articles (published and unpublished) relate to academic writings in the field of linguistics. Series 9, Books, contain manuscripts and correspondence documenting his books on two jazz musicians (Miles Davis and Richard Twardzik), and one unpublished novel. There are no manuscripts for his books written or co-written on the field of linguistics. The final series, Series 10, documents a 10 year research project on Dialect Topography on various Canadian regions.

Accessions include the personal records of Larry Wayne Richards, architect and educator, documenting his personal life with his partner, Frederic Urban, their education and Richards’ professional life, especially his teaching and administrative work at the Nova Scotia Technical College and as Dean of Architecture at the University of Waterloo and the University of Toronto. Also documented is his involvement in multiple design projects, both as a working architect and as an advisor. Included is his work as a member of the Physical Planning and Design Committee at the University of Toronto (especially for Graduate House), the restoration of 230 College Street, his extended collaboration with Kin Yeung (Blanc de Chine, WORKshop), and his participation in municipal architectural and design projects. There are extensive files on his work for the Canadian Centre for Architecture, including the Venice Biennales of 1991 and 1996 and as an advisor to the Royal Ontario Museum’s ‘Renaissance ROM’ project (architect, Daniel Libeskind). There are also files of correspondence and related material on many architects, in particular, Frank Gehry.

Peter H. Russell fonds

The Peter H. Russell fonds is comprised of three accessions: B2005-0001, B2017-0006, and B2019-0008. The records span over 60 years and document Prof. Russell’s academic career primarily with the Department of Political Science at the University of Toronto and as a recognized expert in the field of judicial, constitutional, and Indigenous politics.

Arranged in fourteen series, the records consist of correspondence, both personal and professional, manuscripts of published and unpublished works, addresses, talks and reviews, teaching and research materials. In particular, these records document the development of his expertise through the preparation of manuscripts, research, teaching and communication with colleagues at universities in Canada and internationally. Material also reflects Prof. Russell’s advocacy and active engagement in a number of national issues.

Correspondents in accession B2005-0001 include members of the Canadian judiciary such as Justices D. C. McDonald, Bora Laskin, Bertha Wilson, and Alan Linden, and politicians such as Bob Rae, Ian Scott, Ed Broadbent and Stephane Dion.

Both Series 6 (Professional activities and addresses) and Series 11 (Articles, reviews, published addresses and referee comments), contains samples of talks and addresses delivered to prominent bodies such as the Toronto Club, the Canadian Club (Toronto and Winnipeg), to university audiences and local community groups such as Learning Unlimited.

His public service activities with Indigenous groups, such as the Dene Nation, and with related governmental bodies, such as the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples and the Ipperwash Inquiry, are documented in Series 5 (Consultation and public service). In addition to his academic activities, material from accession B2005-0001 in this series includes records relating to his community involvement with the Wychwood Rate Payer’s Association, the Bathurst-St. Clair Task Force, Legal Aid Committee, Ontario Liberal Association and University Settlement, among others.

Personal records of Professor Stephen Clarkson, documenting his career as a political scientist, writer, teacher, and his early political career in municipal politics and with the Liberal Party of Canada and Ontario. Records in this fonds document the entirety of Clarkson's life and career. Records include biographical information (CV's, activity reports, honours), personal and professional correspondence, and files related to his early education and the writing of his Ph.D. thesis.

Series 3 to 13 consist of records documenting Clarkson's several books and his extensive research and writings over the course of his career. Joint projects and research with Christina McCall including original records by her can be found in some these series as well, specifically the research and writing of Trudeau and Our Times (Series 2) and research on Canadian Federal politics (Series 13).

Series 14 to 18, document Clarkson's teaching activities and his career within the University of Toronto's Department of Political Science.

Series 19 to 22 document his political roles within the Liberal party, his run for Toronto Mayor in 1969 and as well as his social activism.

This fonds also includes Liberal Party of Canada policy documents (1966-1976) belonging to Allen Linden that were given to Clarkson either because he took over as chair of the policy committee or collected as a primary resource for his research on the Liberal Party.

Accession B2019-0003 was an accrual acquired from his spouse Nora Clarkson following his death, and consists of files from his home office and laptop computer.

Accession B2023-0008 (1 box, 1975-2000) is an accrual of further personal records consisting of his journal and notes about his marriage to Christina McCall.

Records consist of exhibition materials including curatorial research, correspondence, grant applications, proposals, budgets, loan agreements, installation guides, lists of works, didactic labels, press materials, invitations, exhibition texts and catalogues, and condition and conservation reports. Records also include facilities reports, building plans, a selection of historical records from University College, ephemera, administrative records of work-study and volunteer programs, collection management files, event and lecture records, and board meeting minutes.

This fonds consists of 3 accessions which together give a fairly complete documentation of Prof. Prentice’s career as a scholar, mentor and teacher. Extensive correspondence, memos, e-mails, research notes and manuscripts found in various series document her scholarly contributions. Correspondence with students, letters of recommendation and her leadership on associations and projects document her wide influence among historians. Since she was a pioneer in the teaching of women’s history, her teaching files found in Series 9 are important resources in studying women’s history as an emerging discipline in higher education.

Perhaps most importantly however, this fonds documents the network of Canadian academics, most of which were women, in the area of women’s history, the history of education and women’s studies in general. Many of Prof. Prentice projects and publications were collaborative and therefore the fonds documents her relationship with this network of women historians. It is also evident that through these collaborations, Prof. Prentice was not only at the centre of women’s studies within her own generation but also influenced the next generation of scholars who have gone on to make their own contributions in history departments and women’s studies programs throughout Canadian universities.

Prof Prentice is a pioneer in both teaching and researching women’s history. As a result, these records will be of interest to anyone researching the evolution of women’s history as a discipline, the teaching of the history of education and women’s history as well the role of women in higher education.
