Collection contains personal and professional papers relating to Howard Engel. These papers contain extensive material on the novels,
books, screenplays, playscripts and radio episodes of Engel. This notably includes drafts for all fourteen novels in the Benny Cooperman series, many including prolific drafts with holograph and editorial revisions. Also included in the collection are extensive drafts for Engel’s final Cooperman novel, Over the River, which was slated to be published in both 2016 and 2018 but was eventually cancelled by the publisher, along with the complete drafts for two unpublished Benny Cooperman novels, and partial drafts and outlines for three additional novels. In addition to his fictional writing, the archives include poetry, articles, reviews, and drafts and proofs for his works of non-fiction. In particular, there are extensive drafts for the memoir of his 2001 stroke, The Man Who Forgot How to Read, the book was originally intended as an autobiography and several earlier drafts exist which detail Engel’s childhood, adolescence and adulthood. During the process of recovering from his stroke, Engel became acquainted with Oliver Sacks, who would later pen an article on Engel in The New Yorker and would go-on to write the afterword of Engel’s memoir. Their extensive correspondence, along with several drafts of Sacks is also present. In addition to material related to Engel’s professional career as a writer, including photographs and press clippings, as well as speeches given over the course of several decades. Engel’s career as a journalist, writer and producer at the CBC is well-documented through scripts and research written or produced by Engel, which is further augmented by audio tapes and reels. The personal life of Engel is well-documented through a nearly complete set of diaries dating between 1991 and 2019, with additional diaries dating from the 1940s, 1950s, 1960s and 1980s, as well as photographs, mementos and through correspondence of a personal and professional nature. The collection contains manuscripts written by other writers, often sent to Engel for feedback or as gifts, this includes drafts or proofs from Kildare Dobbs, Mavis Gallant, Eric Wright and Jack Batten.

Meinhardt Papers

This collection contains two photograph albums belonging to a German couple, Hermann and Emmi Meinhardt, which separately record their wartime experiences. Hermann Meinhardt’s album provides a personalized look at his experiences serving with a flak regiment in the Luftwaffe, which served in France, Austria, Ukraine, Romania and Russia, with photographs focusing on the war-torn landscapes, moments of camaraderie, and battle. Emmi Meinhardt’s album shows the experience of a young mother and her daughter, who were evacuated from Cologne to the Bavarian countryside. Together, both albums demonstrate a unique look at how the war was experienced on the front and at home. This collection also contains a selection of loose photographs belonging to Hermann Meinhardt, which were not included in the album, and date from 1941 to December 1942. Additionally, Hermann Meinhardt’s posthumous medals, including his Iron Cross and his Eastern front medal, were donated along with the photographs. This collection also contains extensive contemporary research on Hermann Meinhardt, his battalion and his military experiences, which was conducted by Inga Kahn, Herman and Emmi Meinhardt’s daughter, her friend, Barbara Tangney, and librarian, Danielle Van Wagner. A book, Vom Train zum Roland: Eine Geschichte der deutschen Flugabwehrtruppe (1988), contains a published account of Meinhardt’s battalion, I./Flak Regt. 4, which provides extensive context to Hermann Meinhardt’s album and photographs.

George Elliot Clarke Papers

This accession of George Elliott Clarke’s papers contains extensive email correspondence from 2015 to 2018, as well as personal
correspondence, notes, invitations and letters. There is material related to published and upcoming books, most notably including
holograph notebooks for Canticles I, II, III and Portia White. As well as an early draft of The Motorcyclist and a film script co-written
with William D. MacGillvray based on George and Rue. Contains a draft, agreement and correspondence for GEC’s memoir, which
will be published by Alfred A. Knopf. Accession contains a large number of word processed academic articles and lectures, as well as
material related to Clarke’s role as a Professor at the University of Toronto. This accession includes poetry, articles and interviews
from Clarke’s time as the Parliamentary Poet Laureate (2016-2017), as well as poetry written during the period of 2015 to 2018,
including those sent by email. Records also contain research material, primarily as photocopied journals, articles and books, on the
topic of Black history, specifically in Nova Scotia. There is also poetry and other writing by other authors, which is primarily sent to
Clarke for revision or comments. In particular, there is a significant amount of information related to Rienzi Crusz.

Alan Stein Papers

This is the third accession of Alan Stein’s Papers by the Fisher. Much of the material relates to
Stein’s work as a bookmaker, illustrator and printmaker in the production of the fine press book
On Spirit Lake. It contains original illustrations, engraved woodblocks, and design notes, as well
as administrative records such as grant applications, invoices and correspondence between the
authors who contributed to the book. This collection also includes material produced by Stein’s
fine press imprint Church Street Press such as broadsides, pamphlets, bookmarks,
advertisements, and posters.

Tripe Family Papers

This collection is comprised of correspondence, documents, photographs and art works, and genealogical materials from England, India, the U.S.A, Cuba, the Philippines, and Canada, dating from 1838-1999, and related to Alfred Tripe (1818-1854), his sister Emily (Tripe) James (1817-1850), their first cousin Mary Broad (Tripe) De Rusett (1820-1898), and their relatives and descendants.

This accession of the Tripe Family Papers includes correspondence, documents, photographs, and genealogical materials relating to descendants of Emily (Tripe) James 1817-1850, as well as photographs, documents and heraldry material pertaining to both ancestors and descendants of Emily's brother Alfred Tripe 1818-1854. Correspondence, written in England, Hawaii, and mainland America, relates to Emily's grandchildren, specifically William Francis James (1861-1944), Caroline Laura James (1861-1941) and Emma Polglase (James) Stevens Edwardes (1867-1958), and their mother Caroline Sophia (Beaumont) James (1842-1927) as well as the descendants of William Francis James, particularly Francis Leicester James (1888-1977). The letters describe several visits by family members to others in England and Hawaii, as well as ongoing correspondence between the James family in Hawaii, England, and India. Of note, are descriptions and observations of travel through mainland America, a first-hand account of the 1911 Delhi Durbar, discussions of the First and Second World Wars, and the fate of an oil portrait of James James (1800) by John Opie. James family documents include rare postcards of India from 1905-1913, the majority acquired and distributed to family members by Edith (James) Storrs (1873-1940). Xerox copies in this accession of two manuscripts written by William Francis James on his experiences immigrating to the United States in the 1880s, his service with Roosevelt’s Rough Riders in Cuba during the Spanish-American War, and subsequent service as an Assistant Surgeon in the Philippines 1899-1903 can be compared with his original letters about these experiences in Tripe Family Papers 2016 (MS Coll 00050A). There is also a typescript manuscript written by William Francis James’ daughter, Naomi (James) Hart (1898-2001) on the James’ family experience of immigrating to Hawaii. Photographs depict descendants of the James family taken by Janet Dewan on trips to England and Hawaii in the 1970s and 1980s, as well as original historical photographs of James descendants taken in 1916 and 1929, and copies of historical James photographs made by Janet Dewan in 1985. Tripe material in this collection includes the metal seal bearing the crest and motto of Cornelius Tripe (1785-1860) and a wax rubbing made of the monumental inscription to William Tripe (died 1681) and Margaret his wife (died 1690) in the Parish church of All Saints, Kenton, Devon. Also included is material related to the military service of Alfred King Tripe (1887-1917), and Philip Valentine King Tripe (1918-1982), as well as five draft typescripts of memories, typed and hand-corrected by Marian F.K (Tripe) Ade (1915-2010), regarding family history, immigration, and military involvement.

A collection of approximately 2000 “literatura de cordel” chapbooks, or “folhetos de cordel”, from 1934 to 2017. Most of the chapbooks are printed in the Northeastern provinces of Brazil; including imprints the Tipografia São Francisco (Juazeiro do Norte, Ceará), and the Tipografia Pontes (Guarabira, Paraíba), along with those of several independent poet-publishers, such as the Rodolfo Coelho Cavalcante (Salvador, Bahia), the José Francisco Borges (Bezerros, Pernambuco), and Franklin Maxado Nordestino (São Paulo). Also includes a series of woodcut illustrations printed onto broadsides from the artist Enéias Tavares dos Santos.
