Also included is a small amount of personal material and photographs, pertaining to his education and early career. Some published materials were received as part of the donation but were either not retained or catalogued separately. A list of these books is included as an appendix to this finding aid for reference purposes.

A collection of approximately 2000 “literatura de cordel” chapbooks, or “folhetos de cordel”, from 1934 to 2017. Most of the chapbooks are printed in the Northeastern provinces of Brazil; including imprints the Tipografia São Francisco (Juazeiro do Norte, Ceará), and the Tipografia Pontes (Guarabira, Paraíba), along with those of several independent poet-publishers, such as the Rodolfo Coelho Cavalcante (Salvador, Bahia), the José Francisco Borges (Bezerros, Pernambuco), and Franklin Maxado Nordestino (São Paulo). Also includes a series of woodcut illustrations printed onto broadsides from the artist Enéias Tavares dos Santos.

Contains anatomical drawings and illustrations from Stephen Gilbert’s publications and professional life as an anatomical illustrator. Collection notably includes anatomical drawings of the adult human, adult embryo, cat, fetal pig, dogfish, necturus, frog and other assorted zoology. Includes accessions from 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1999, 2000, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2015. Accessions from the gifts of 2001 and 2003 were catalogued separately. For additional drawings and illustrations from Outline of Cat Anatomy with Reference to the Human (University of Toronto Press, 2000) and Atlas of General Zoology (Burgess Publishing Co., 1991), Anatomy of the Fetal Pig (University of Washington Press, 1963). These accessions were amalgamated into finding aid in 2018 and the entire collection was given the number of MS Coll. 413. The collection previously had the number of MS Coll. 289.

Contains the papers of Joan Treble (Sutton) Straus including a small amount of material regarding her early life including primary and high school education (1939-1950), as well as at her time at the University of Toronto (1950-1953). Includes material such as photographs and newspaper clippings related to her modeling career and her work as a fashion consultant (1952-1970). The collection covers Sutton Straus’ career as a journalist with the Toronto Telegram (1971), The Toronto Star (1972-1979, 1981-1992) and The Toronto Star (1979-1981, 1992). This includes correspondence from readers, co-workers and well-known politicians, entertainers and dignitaries, as well as photographs of Sutton Straus during the course of her work. The material also includes clippings of her columns, interviews and articles preserved by Sutton Straus, as well as three oversized scrapbooks containing clippings from her time at the Toronto Telegram and The Toronto Sun. The collection also comprises material related to Sutton Straus’ career as an author of six books, and her long-term volunteer work with non-profit and philanthropic organizations in both Canada and the United States. Scope and content:
This collection contains drafts and proofs for a number of Sarah’s published monographs, including Little Eurekas (Biblioasis, 2007), A Day’s Grace (The Porcupine’s Quill, 2003), and The Touchstone: Poems New and Selected (Anansi, 1992), along with correspondence and drafts of Sarah’s contributions to the Porcupine’s Quill Essential Poets series, on Margaret Avison, Don Coles, and George Johnston. Also included are over sixty published examples of Sarah’s poetry, essays, interviews, and fiction, in Canadian and American periodicals such as The Malahat Review, ARC, The Threepenny Review, The Walrus, and The New Quarterly.
In addition, this collection includes correspondence, drafts and published versions of Sarah’s journalistic work, which has appeared in Canadian newspapers such as The Globe and Mail, The Montreal Gazette, and The Ottawa Citizen. Materials relating to Sarah’s editorial work for Cormorant Books and House of Anansi Press are also included, along with material pertaining to Sarah’s involvement in numerous literary events.

The bulk of the material was created by the Canadian Bata company, however many records relate to several of the oraganization’s international outposts, including companies headed in Africa, India, Asia and Europe. The collection also includes press clippings and other publications about the Bata Company and its historical significance. There are also a small number of Bata family records, primarily for Thomas J. Bata (1914-2008), Sonja I. Bata, Tomáš Baťa (1876-1932) and Marie Bata.
