Abbey of the Genesee file

File consists of twelve letters from Brother Christian at the Abbey of the Genesee between 1982 and 1996, predominantly 1982-1985. File also contains a photograph and copies of two articles with one of the articles referring to Nouwen's death.

Actor René Maupré (René de Chauffour)

-Press clippings (221 pages) following the career of actor René Maupré – clippings ranging from 1904-1930 approx. (many clippings are not dated) – some clippings with photographs – great variety of important French newspapers: L’Humanité, Le Matin, La Petite République, L’Aurore, Le Monde illustré, Le Figaro, etc. – clippings about the Théâtre Antoine (Maupré was one of its stars) – some playbills from the Théâtre Antoine – some clippings from American and English newspapers (from p. 145) and some from Italian newspapers (p. 192 sq.) – a very interesting article by Maupré himself (1920?) on the future of cinema as a new art for the “masses” (p. 177).

Alan Cook photograph

File consists of one original colour photgraph of Nouwen playing the piano at a L'Arche assistants' retreat in February of 1990. The retreat took place in Mono Mills, ON. The photographer is Alan Cook.

Alexander, Myra

Files consists of personal correspondence from Myra Alexander to Henri Nouwen and Kathy Christie regarding general updates, Alexander’s creative writing, and the health of Alexander and her mother Elizabeth Alexander Hartmann. Also included in the file are responses from Christie; photographs of Alexander; greeting cards; a thank you card from Eric Alexander; and a note from Sister Elizabeth Tyson regarding the naming of the Nouwen Literary Centre.

Art/artists - Resources file

File consists of two copies of Rembrandt’s self-portrait, a Spring 1989 newsletter from The Pierpont Morgan Library with an article mentioning Rembrandt and a guide to the Rembrandt exhibit at the Rijksmuseum with a small print of the Rembrandt's Prodigal Son. Also included is a postcard depicting "The Storm on the Sea of Galilee" by Rembrandt and a slide featuring the same painting.

File also consists of an article about an art installation titled "Celestial Vault at Kijkduin" by James Turrell. This was an installation in the dunes near The Hague, created by Turrell (an American artist). There is also an article titled "Een cilinder vol zeegeruis" by Jan Wolkers, a Dutch author and artist.

Articles related to Jean Vanier’s work

File consists of articles and newspaper clippings from Canadian newspapers on Jean Vanier and his work. Includes 3 photographs of Jean Vanier, one from 7 February 1973 and two undated; a photograph of Jean Vanier's mother, Madame Pauline Vanier; 3 photographs taken at a L' Arche community, undated; and 2 copies of the May 1973 edition of Pastoral-Quebec titled Une Esperance? with Jean Vanier on the cover.

August 1985

File consists of correspondence and other material regarding Nouwen's participation in August Desert Wilderness, an event protesting nuclear testing, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Includes a copy of a letter from Jim Antal to Anne Bucher and a letter from Jim to Nouwen regarding the event. Nouwen gave a talk on August 6th. Also includes a pamphlet about the event, a postcard, and photograph of Jim and family.

Books by Ricarda Nissen

File consists of two books by Ricarda Nissen with content inspired by Henri Nouwen who Nissen met at a book signing in Germany. The book are:
1) "Komm mit zur heiligen Messe" by Ricarda Nissen, 1994. Contains an inscription by Nissen to the Nouwen Archive Letter Project.
2) "Ich komme zu dir. Kinder beten und feiern die heilige Messe" by Ricarda Nissen, 1997

File also includes a postcard with an image produced by Sieger Köder for Nissen's book "Ich komme zu dir" and a photograph of a wall in Nissen's house that contains three original paintings by Köder. The photograph has an inscription noting that the inscription on the wall was from Nouwen.

Card from Jennie Strasser

File consists of a handwritten card sent from Nouwen to Strasser with a photograph of a winter scene on it. A Christmas card to Nouwen from Strasser has been removed to the General file.

Carol Plantinga Mead photographs

File consists of eight photographs that were collected by Carol Plantinga Mead. Six of these photographs feature Henri Nouwen. Two of the photographs were sent to Mead by Nouwen's father, Laurent Nouwen, and do not feature Nouwen.

He is at his birthday party at Carol Plantinga Mead's home and is opening gifts, including "The Book of Tapestry", a coffee mug with multicoloured hearts, "The Way of the Heart" (by Nouwen), and a yellow stuffed heart that is around his neck. Nouwen is wearing a blue suit jacket and black and white plaid tie, and a Yale hat. Back of photograph contains annotation in two different hands, the first reading: "Henri's birthday party - Jan. 1981", and the second reading: "(49 years old)".
  • P3436: Photograph of Henri Nouwen. He is at his birthday party at Carol Plantinga Mead's home, and is talking to Joseph Nunez, Mead, and Robert (Bob) Massie. He is wearing a light brown sweater with a white collared shirt underneath. Photograph was likely taken between 1975 and 1981.
  • P3440: Photograph of Carol Plantinga Mead, Henri Nouwen, and John Mogabgab. They are all outside near trees. Mead and Nouwen are seated facing away from the camera and smiling. Mogabgab is standing to the right of them facing in the same direction. There are guitars in the grass to his left. They were at a worship service at Swarthmore College.   • P3442: Photograph of Henri Nouwen's father, Laurent J.M. Nouwen's, home in winter. Photo was taken from far away, so some of the surrounding forest can be seen. Photograph was sent to Mead by Laurent J.M. Nouwen, and contains a note by him on the verso of the photograph. Photograph contains annotation by Laurent Nouwen: "The everlasting winter 1983/4. [?] for an old man, like me! Laurent Nouwen. Geysteren. 19/3/85." Note is signed.

Charlene Sexton

File consists of a card from Charlene Sexton to Maureen Wright regarding the addition of her book The Geography of the Heart: Poetic Paths for the Journey Inward to the Nouwen Archives. Also included in the file is a photograph of Sexton and Regula Russelle at a book launch celebrating Sexton’s book and a [misfiled?] letter to Sue Mosteller from Carol [Berry] with an outline for a book about Nouwen, Van Gogh and Compassion.

Chicago Sunday Evening Club - September 29, 1991

File consists of correspondence and other material from David Hardin, regarding Nouwen's appearance on the Chicago Sunday Evening Club. Includes letters between Connie and Hardin making the arrangements for Nouwen's trip to Chicago. Includes Chicago Sunday Evening Club Annual Report 1989-90, newsletters, travel itinerary, airline tickets, and a speaker's information brochure. Includes a photograph of Don O'Neill who picked Nouwen up from the airport. Also includes a letter from Nouwen reflecting on his performance. A videocassette of his performance was sent to Nouwen by Hardin.

Christ the Redeemer

File consists of 1 slide featuring an icon by Andrei Rublev, titled "Christ the Redeemer" or "Le Sauveur" ["The Saviour"]. The icon features Jesus Christ. The actual icon is damaged, and was a fresco, possibly painted by Rublev in the 1420s for one of Zvenigorod cathedrals. The icon is now located in the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow, Russia.

Claude Pomerleau photographs

File consists of printed copies of photographs of Nouwen, Don McNeill and Claude Pomerleau, taken in 1970 and 1980. There are four black and white copies of two photographs (two are enlarged versions); copies of the verso of the two photographs, stating the date, location and brief description; and colour copies of two other photographs.

Clippings, programmes, photographs, letters related to Zola

-Le Charivari, 4 April 1888. This comic newspaper loved poking fun at Zola. In this issue, a satirical article on Zola's political ambitions, entitled "Zola Consultant", signed Cascadio (p. 1-2).
-Theatre du Vaudeville, 20 May 1892. Programme for a one-time matinee performance of Zola's Therese Raquin at the Theatre du Vaudeville in support of the Oeuvre de la Societe maternelle parisienne (La Pouponnière), a benefit organization for orphaned children.
-Signed theatre programme for a special matinee in support of a tomb and a monument for Henry Becque, 31 May 1904. The matinee featured drama, a lecture and a poetry reading. The programme is signed by Victories Sardou, Georges de Porto-Riche, Emile Fabre and Camille Le Sense.
-3 photographs (one of H. Becque as a young man, two of his monument).
-Autograph letter from [signature illegible – great-nephew of Becque] to Madame Georges Ancey, dated «le 23 novembre 1932». Is preparing an edition of Henry Becque’s work – knows that Becque and Ancey were close. Is inquiring if there are letters and documents he could consult. Antoine told him that it could be the case.
-Autograph letter from J. Molbert [?] to [?], dated «3 juin 1905». Asks for tickets for the play. Praises the play, which is penetrating and passionate.

CNT staff and volunteers

File consists of photographs of staff and volunteers, including film negatives and two contact sheets, as well as one handwritten note. Photographs depict staff working, events, and portraits.

File consists of 137 commercial slides, collected by Nouwen. These slides feature images of a statue of Erasmus (Rotterdam, the Netherlands); the steamer boat "President" (New Orleans, LA); Bourbon Street in New Orleans, LA; images of the S.S. Consultation on Parish Ministry Conference - January 6 - 10, 1992

File consists of correspondence, mainly with Allan Johnson, and other material regarding Nouwen's presentations at the Consultation on Parish Ministry in Orlando, Florida. The theme of the event was "The Spiritual Life of the Pastor." Also includes correspondence with Brett Webb-Mitchell discussing his work with children with disabilities and his desire to meet with Nouwen in Orlando, annotations on the letter of response confirm the meeting. Includes two pieces of writing from Webb-Mitchell "The Religious Imagination of Children with Disabilities" and "Welcome Unexpected Guests to the Banquet." Also includes travel itinerary, airline tickets for Nouwen and three other members of Daybreak, conference Guidebook and Workshop book, and a number of letters, cards, and photographs for Nouwen regarding the event.

Contract with M. Chimene, poster and cover

Typed contract between Antoine and M. Chimene, dated «2 février 1917», on letterhead «28, Place Dauphine».
Regarding the partnership between Antoine and Chimene for the Gaité theatre.
With a two-page letter [first page missing), where Antoine explains that he does not want to take care of financial issues.

Doubleday correspondence file

File consists of business correspondence concerning A Cry for Mercy, Compassion and Reaching Out; business documents include an agreement regarding "untitled book on Compassion", permission to use Reaching Out, two original signed copies of agreements for Downward Mobility, eight photographic prints of illustrations (including at least one used for A Cry for Mercy), and publisher advertisements for The Genesee Diary.

Doubleday correspondence file

File consists of business correspondence concerning Compassion, Reaching Out, The Spirituality of Intimacy, Fecundity and Ecstasy (Lifesigns); business documents including a copy of Spanish agreement for Reaching Out, and an agreement for Nouwen to write an introduction to Yushi Nomura's Desert Wisdom; personal correspondence including copies of Nouwen's letters, thank you letters to the Doubleday staff and mentioning that he was enclosing a card made on occasion of the 25th anniversary of his Ordination (card not in file). File also includes four example sheets of calligraphy used for sub-titles and eight ink line drawings by Dr. Joel Filartiga used to illustrate Compassion.

File consists of business correspondence concerning The Wounded Healer, The Return of the Prodigal Son (one letter in French), Aging, Interrupted Love (published as The Inner Voice of Love) and Compassion (Japanese edition); business documents including a colour photo suggested as a cover image, three colour mock covers for The Wounded Healer, sample text and Spanish rights offer sheet for The Return of the Prodigal Son.

El Salvador file

File consists of materials pertaining to the play “A peasant of El Salvador” and its performance at Yale Divinity School that was organized by Nouwen in 1983. File also includes a promotional package for the play, the contract for the performance and a promotional photograph.

Elaine Davey Eskesen photographs

File consists of four black and white photographs of Nouwen with Elaine Davey Eskesen and her son Eric. The series of photographs was taken at Yale Divinity School in 1981.

Elizabeth M. Sibley Parry photographs

File consists of two sets of photographs of Nouwen received from Elizabeth M. Sibley Parry. The first set consists of 19 photographs, primarily of Nouwen visiting with Pat Sibley. The photographs have handwritten notes on the back including:

Frank Hamilton photographs

File consists of a print-out of e-mails exchanged between Frank Hamilton and Maureen Wright, and copies of 19 photographs of Nouwen, taken by Frank Hamilton and Kevin Dwyer during two separate trips to California. The photographs by Hamilton were taken in Big Sur, CA, in July, 1994. The photographs by Kevin Dwyer were taken in April, 1996.

Nouwen gave three seminars entitled "Being the Beloved," "The Life of the Beloved," and "The Discipline of the Beloved.' Includes Greenbelt Art Festival programs and daily event guide from 1991 and 1992. Includes a brochure, information sheets, forms, maps, and directions. Also includes newspaper article about Nouwen at the festival and a photograph of Nouwen bowing his head in prayer as he prepared for his talk.
