Collection consists of manuscripts from various sources relating to the Spanish Civil War and to various anti-Franco organizations in Canada and the United States to support the Republican cause. Included are manuscripts; correspondence; scrapbooks containing clippings, correspondence, documents and prints; and records relating to the fiftieth anniversary of the Spanish Civil War including photographs, memorabilia, awards and audio recordings.

Collection consists of 14 oral history interviews with members of the South Asian diaspora residing within the Peel Region (Mississauga and Brampton) in Ontario, Canada. Interviews were conducted by students enrolled in the senior undergraduate course RLG360 Special Topics in South Asian Religions: South Asian Oral Histories in Peel offered at the University of Toronto Mississauga in the 2021 winter term during the global COVID-19 pandemic.

First accession contains correspondence, drafts of speeches and writings, journals, scrapbooks, photographs, clippings and family papers.

Second accession contains 56 boxes and items. The documents consist of personal and business correspondence, articles and addresses, banking and legal documents, estate information, biography information, and other items. The correspondence relates to art and the National Gallery, De Grassi Point, geology, Japanese consul, The Champlain Society, the National Battlefields Commission, the Royal Colonial Institute, the Round Table, University College Alumnae Association Building Committee. There is a significant amount of correspondence from the Canadian Bank of Commerce, the University of Toronto, and the Royal Ontario Museum, and with many prominent individuals in Canada and worldwide as well as letters to Mary before and after they married and messages of condolence received by the family after the death of Sir Edmund Walker. Other documents in the collection relate to the Alexander, Buchan, and Morrow families; the Coronation of King George V and other special events; the Duke of Sutherland's Scheme (Imperial Colonization Corporation of Canada); the West Virginia Debt Settlement; and C. White Mortimer. The items are books, a lace handkerchief, a wooden drawer containing numerous calling cards, card index of pictures and art objects, a framed drawing of the coat of arms, Sir Edmund Walker's certificates and medal upon being admitted as a Knight of the Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem, pieces of the fireplace from Long Garth, a silver vase, a silver bowl, a china plate with Walker crest and logo, and a fishing rod and net.

B2010-0004: Illuminated "In Memoriam" volume produced by the City of Toronto containing the "Resolution of Condolence" dated 10 October 1892 relating to the death of Sir Daniel Wilson.

This collection consists of 430 stereographs. They were assembled primarily by Sir Daniel Wilson and likely his daughter Sybil after his death. They document his interests in photography, especially of antiquarian Scotland and ethnology, and include many images of places he visited in Canada and the United States such as the White Mountains in New Hampshire where, on holidays, he painted many watercolours. Also included here are images of Toronto, the University of Toronto, the Toronto Magnetic and Meteorological Observatory, and two of the American Civil War.

Note on Sir Daniel Wilson

Sir Daniel Wilson was an accomplished amateur artist and much interested in the new medium of photography. He collected photographs, primarily in the stereographic medium, wherever he travelled and asked his friends to send images to him. He travelled widely following his arrival in Canada in 1853. In his first decade “he went as far south as Virginia and Kentucky, as far east as Prout’s Neck, Maine, as far west as the St. Louis River, and as far north as Lake Nipigon” [1]. He travelled many times along the St. Lawrence River and the Saguenay in that decade and later, made two trips to the upper Great Lakes (1855 and 1866), was introduced to the Green Mountains in New Hampshire and the Adirondacks and historic sites in New York, and in 1862 visited Washington and Civil War battle sites in Virginia. In 1863 he returned to Britain and Europe for the first time (he would go to again in 1878, 1880, 1885 and 1891). In the 1870s, his travels to him along the Muskoka and Severn Rivers (1870), and to Native sites in Kentucky and Ohio (1874).

After Wilson became President of University College in 1880, he sought escape from the heat of Toronto summers in New Hampshire and the eastern seaboard of the United States. In August of 1881 he first visited the White Mountains in New Hampshire where he was inspired to take up painting again, and to which he returned in 1882, 1883, 1886, and from 1887 to 1890. There, with his wife Margaret until her death in 1885, and his daughter Sybil, he sought out sites “with indelibly North American names, in which he clearly revelled” – Black Mountain, Cascade Brook, Mount Osceola, Mount Tecumseth, the Mad River, and Scar Ridge [2]. In 1883 he vacationed along the Atlantic coast of Maine and in 1884 he went to the Adirondacks around Lake Placid.

Academic hood used by Sir Charles Scott Sherrington on receiving an honorary doctorate (LLD) from the University of Toronto in 1903. Inside label reads "Sherrington".

Legal and business papers and correspondence, chiefly relating to MacNab’s various property transactions, as well as a small amount of historical material relating to the Rebellion of 1837-1838. Also includes documents from the governing of the Estate after Allan MacNab’s death. This includes papers from MacNab’s sister-in-law and executor, Sophia Stuart MacNab, as well papers from her successors, Mary Stuart Daly and Caroline Daly. These records pertain to the maintenance of the estate, information on the mortgages owned by the estate and lawsuits.

Consists of books and notes from Adams’ tenure as Classicist at Trinity College. In addition to marginalia noted in the texts, there are also typed and handwritten notes for lectures including booklets of notes for specific courses, and an ink sketch from 1920.

Includes correspondence from Mavis Gallant to Joan McInnes, 1970s-1990s.

“Signal log for the Great Eastern during the cable laying and recovery of Atlantic cables 1866-65” [Signals here are between the Great Eastern and the “Terrible”, “Racoon”, “Medway”, and “Albany” [...] the messages comprise S.S. Great Eastern July 13, 1866 – Sept. 8, 1866 Telegraphs Telegraph Collection a narrative of the laying of the cable. Minor incidents are recorded here such as on July 17 “warning bell touched by accident” and the following day “cables are entangled in tank”. The cables become much more detailed toward the end of July and the second part of this signal journal describes the successful attempt to refind the 1865 cable repair it and complete its connection with Newfoundland.]

The collection consists primarily of manuscript material collected by C.B. Fisher and S.T. Fisher. Among the authors they collected include Norman Douglas,. Lord Dunsany, Sidney H. Sime and Rudyard Kipling. The collection also includes S.T. Fisher's correspondence relating to his book and print collections, as well as articles and other writings by him and C.B. Fisher.

Course notebooks of Sidney Jabez Cook (B.A. 1914).

Personal records of Sidney Earle Smith, President of the University from 1945 to 1957. Consists of two accessions, the bulk of which are in accession B1972-0001. Includes speeches, addresses, correspondence, scrapbooks, clippings and files created while Minister of External Affairs, 1957-1959. Also includes photos of various events and ceremonies on campus while Smith was President.

Accession B2004-0030 consists of correspondence and attachments from Gilbert E. Jackson, head of Gilbert E. Jackson & Associates to Sidney Earle Smith relating to the work of the Canadian Council for Economic Studies.

Collection contains professional and personal papers pertaining to the life and career of Shyam Selvadurai. These papers contain extensive material on the novels of Selvadurai. This includes prolific drafts, most with holograph revisions, proofs and promotional material for all four of his novels. The collection also contains extensive research that was conducted by Selvadurai for Funny Boy and Cinnamon Gardens. Material also relates to two unpublished novels: one tracing the lives of the characters from Swimming in the Monsoon Sea as adults and living in Canada, and the other – The Vanishing Relics, which Selvadurai wrote during the course of his MFA in 2010.

Also included in the collection are drafts and published articles and stories, which appeared in journals, newspapers and magazines, as well as additions to anthologies which were edited by Selvadurai. Records relate to promotion and career of Selvadurai including articles and interviews, author photographs, readings and events. Collection also pertains to the personal life of Selvadurai with correspondence (primarily between 1985 and 2005), photographs and personal items. Other personal material relates to his education in Sri Lanka and Canada and theatre productions directed by Selvadurai as a young adult in Sri Lanka.

Series 13 (Warner Bros. Short Subject Release Sheets) contains publicity notices released with short subject films by Warner Bros. studios. The films concerned are predominantly re-releases of cartoons owned by Warner Bros. and re-released between 1949 and 1969.

Series 14 (Lasting Love) contains three VHS tapes relating to the television documentary “Lasting Love”, originally broadcast by PBS in 2003. Two VHS tapes a 10-minute previews and the third contains the full 60-minute documentary.

Series 15 (Thomas Care) is comprised of production elements and textual materials related to the short film “Pictures from Home” produced by Shirley Hughes and directed by Thomas Care. This series includes Thomas Care’s director demo reel, Super 16mm camera negatives of “Pictures from Home”, VHS and BetacamSP previews or trailers for the film, 2 VHS tapes of content transferred from the film reels, and a letter of correspondence between Care and Hughes.

Memorabilia including programmes, snapshots, group portraits, clippings documenting two graduates of the class of 1941 who later married: Shirley Hill, UC (Law) and James Warner Eakins, BASc (Civil). Of interest are a set of napkins embroidered for Shirley Hill by her mother Gladys Legge (B.A. 1914) for her graduation and several graduation snapshots of her and her classmates, all law students. There is a few documents on class reunions, 1941 programs for U.C. Follies and Skule Nite, as well as a May 1939 Presentation of Colours program.

Fonds is comprised primarily of articles and material advocating for Japanese Canadian Redress. Textual material from the formation and activities of the Sodan-Kai are also included.

Correspondence, notices of lectures, letters of reference, memorabilia, committee files and photographs document the career of Professor Sherwin Desser, a parasitologist in the Department of Zoology and Chairman of that department from 1990-1999. Desser also served as Chair of the Hart House Art Committee and there is one file documenting this role. Finally, there is also two painted portraits by Prof. Desser, one self-portrait and one of Kenneth C. Fisher.

Correspondence and photograph concerning the awarding of the achievement medal of the Alpha Omega Fraternity to Albert Einstein; correspondence and publication regarding Einstein's efforts on behalf of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

The collection consists of records of the Ayliffe Family which were acquired by S.W. Shelton in the 1950s. Included are two account books (dating from 1572 and 1595-1613), as well as documents and letters that belonged to the Ayliffe family. Transcriptions made by S.W. Shelton, along with his correspondence and research notes are also included.

The collection consists of typescripts, some with holograph corrections, along with newspaper clippings containing the published versions as they appeared in North American Russian-language newspapers. It also contains some correspondence relating mainly to his newspaper work.

Fonds consists of administrative records of the Senior Common Room including agendas and minutes from general and committee meetings, communications from various secretaries to members, membership lists, newsletters, financial documents, and event information. Fonds also includes various versions of the SCR constitution and by-laws.

Records document the activities of Selwyn Pieters, an African-Canadian part-time student, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Criminology in 1997. Included are records relating to his academic standing, student papers, lectures given in his final years, invitations, awards, memberships and participation in student groups. He was a student representative on the Academic Board of Governing Council, 1993-1998.

The collection consists of a disassembled scrapbook of insurance underwriters' reports and records, fire reports, original news clippings and photographs, and other miscellaneous material on various North American conflagrations between 1904 and 1918. Of particular local interest are the pages (five in total) devoted to the Toronto fire of 1904. Among the other major North American fires represented in the scrapbook include those in the cities of Baltimore, Rochester, Halifax, Indianapolis, New Orleans, Three Rivers (Que.), Salem (Mass.), Campbelltown (NB), Houston and Atlanta, among others. The scrapbook appears to have been assembled by an underwriter from the firm of Royal Insurance Company of Liverpool.

This fonds consists two accessions of personal records of Prof. Scott M. Eddie, Department of Economics in the University of Toronto and University of Toronto at Mississauga. The records document his academic achievements predominantly during his more than 30 years with the University of Toronto specializing in European economic history. It includes professional correspondence with colleagues and personal records relating to his employment arrangements with the University of Toronto, manuscripts of published and unpublished scholarly works in English, Hungarian and German, teaching and research materials mainly in the form of grant applications. There are also records relating to his undergraduate education at the University of Minnesota and graduate work at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). This includes files relating to his PhD thesis (including a copy of the thesis) as well as class notes. Administrative files of Science for Peace, a registered charity founded in 1981 by University of Toronto faculty concerned with world peace and environmental and social justice. Fonds consists of four (4) accessions:

This collection contains a number of school supply catalogues from the mid-20th century. These catalogues include supplies such as school furniture, maps and globes, art supplies, science supplies, and school readers.

Training Guides written by 4th year students of the School of Physical and Health Education submitted in partial fulfillment of their degree. Topics cover a wide variety of sports and physical activities. They are original typescripts and some include original photographs.

Fonds consists of records relating to research done for a doctoral dissertation on Dr. Pelham Edgar including: correspondence, 1977–1978; research/subject files consisting primarily of photocopies of articles, as well as notes and correspondence, 1977–1979; and photocopies of Pelham Edgar’s writing, including articles, essays, obituaries and reviews, 1880s–1940s.

The fonds covers Dr. Borins’ research on film, history, biography, and other topics relating to business, information technology, automobile manufacturing, and financial trading. Types of documents include Dr. Borins’ notes and summaries, drafts of writings, articles, and course notes.

The aforementioned research resulted in the publication of Dr. Borin’s book titled Negotiating Business Narratives: Fables of the Information Technology, Automobile Manufacturing, and Financial Trading Industries published by Palgrave Pivot in 2018.
