Services

Series D, Services, covers the years 1949 and 1952 through 2009. The university provides many services for faculty, staff, and students. The series is has been arranged base on the department providing services (i.e. the library); some smaller service providers are grouped together based on a common target audience (i.e. faculty and staff organizations). The series is divided into ten subseries.

Student Organizations

The subseries D.7 Student Organizations covers the years 1964 through 2009. Student organizations are considered to be services offered to students by other students, such as student newspapers. The subseries includes material from arts groups (drama, music, theatre), the Association of Part-Time Undergraduate Students (APUS), the Arts and Sciences Student Union (ASSU), the Scarborough College Student Council (SCSC) / Union (SCSU), the Students’ Administrative Council (SAC), the Scarborough College International Students’ Association, the Chinese Student Association. Also included are issues of the following student publications: Marooned, Dialectic, Apocalypse, SMU*T, Mindfield, Absolute Graffiti, The Underground, Mimesis, Balcony Square, Scarborough Fair, and others.

The archives contain a range of documentation relating to the foundation, history, and activities of the University of Toronto Scarborough. The materials have been arranged largely by originating department or by medium in the case of publications, photographs, clippings, architectural plans, and artifacts. Office of Advancement/Development Office

The subseries B.10 Office of Advancement / Development Office covers the years 1968 to 2006. The Office of Advancement is responsible for curating alumni relations, prospect research, facilitating gifts and planned giving, and fundraising. The subseries includes course calendars, alumni directories, and issues of the Scarborough College Alumni Newsletter (SCAN), the Campaign Quarterly, and ScarboroughLive.

Executive and Administrative Bodies

The series B. Executive and Administrative Bodies covers the years 1963 to 2006. The executive and administrative bodies of the university are responsible for governing, decision- making, and action implementation for a wide variety of university activities and endeavors, incorporating both academic and administrative functions. The series is divided into thirteen subseries based on the executive and administrative structure of the university:

Communications & Public Affairs

The subseries B.12 Communications & Public Affairs covers the years 1996 to 1992, 2002, and 2005. The department of Communications & Public Affairs, composed in part from prior departments such as Publications Office and the Community Relations Office, is responsible for the outward promotion of the university’s image to stakeholders, including prospective and current students, through various media channels. The department also publishes the Annual Review, the annual student recruitment Viewbook, and other publications; it is responsible for the website and social media outlets; and it directs marketing and advertising of the university. The files in this subseries include issues of many Scarborough College/UTSC publications, including the Bulletin, UTSC Live, To Be Taken Internally/Internally Yours, Spectrum, and Inside UTSC, as well as other documentation.

Library Statistics

File contains one copy of a book of handwritten statistics library statistics for Scarborough and Erindale from Oct. 1964 to May 1967, and three UTL Annual Statistics forms from 2005-2006, and 2006-2007.

External Sources of Information

The series E. External Sources of Information covers the years 1956 and 1960 to 2007. The series contains items that are relevant to UTSC’s history and operations but were not created at the university or by university bodies. The materials have been placed in subseries based on their institution of origin or a perceived similarity in use. There are nine subseries in series E.

Library

The subseries D.1 Library covers the years 1962 through 2007. The library’s three incarnations – the Scarborough College Library (1966-1982), the Bladen Library (1982- 2003), and the UTSC Library (2003 to present) – are all represented. The UTSC Library and its predecessors function as a branch of the University of Toronto Libraries system. Particularly well represented is longtime head librarian John Ball. The subseries includes memos, correspondence of the chief librarian, minutes, agendas, and reports from various library-related committees, budgets and financial information, event information, space and facilities information, materials related to systems and services provided by the library, and various other materials.

Clippings and Scrapbooks

The subseries E.9 Clippings and Scrapbooks covers the years 1963 to 2006. The materials form a collection of articles clipped from newspapers and magazines that relate to Scarborough College/UTSC, the University of Toronto, the university community, and various other tangential subjects. At the end of the series are eight scrapbooks, four of which continue to be housed in their original covers; these items were assiduously maintained and present a day-to-day reflection on perceptions of Scarborough College/UTSC. Many of the earliest clippings are concerned with the origins of the school and its physical characteristics, while later articles cover all manner of subjects: internal governance, community involvement, students, staff, and faculty, campus events, and many more. Also included are posters, pamphlets, flyers, and other materials relating to a wide range of campus events.

Library - O.C. Acquisitions (2005-2006)

File contains handwritten notes, Archives ~ Boxes, email correspondence, pamphlet for The Canadian Premier of Chi Borag: Master of the Mongolian Cello, correspondence, and Some material documenting W.E. Beckel career with the UofT 1956-1968.

Student Services

The subseries D.6 Student Services covers the years 1964 through 2006. Student services are defined as initiatives directed at the student population, but which are funded and generally run by the university (i.e. not students). The subseries includes statistics, student directories, Writing Center materials, brochures for residences, Cultural Affairs flyers and event calendars, Watts Lecture materials, orientation and convocation materials, and other materials pertaining to services offered by the university to students.

The Gallery Doris McCarthy Gallery

File includes: The Gallery Scarborough College; Event cards for: Return, Afghanistan, Photographs by Zalmai; Angela Leach - SHIMMY; Quanta; Strife - Scott Carruthers, Crysta; Mowry and Marc Ngui; Little Breeze by Nina Levitt; and John Kissick Recent Works.

[Clippings - Architecture]

File includes printouts of various online articles and resources that reference the architecture at UTSC. Also includes information on various architects, including Donald Forgie and John Andrews, and architectural firms such as Page & Steele.

Gallery

The subseries D.3 Gallery covers the years 1980 through 1981 and 2006. The subseries includes a handbook, event cards, and an exhibition book.

Photographs

The subseries F.1 Photographs covers the dates 1965 through 1995 and 1999 through 2005. The photographs have been arranged by subject and then chronologically within subject, showing the campus and buildings, events, and individuals. Of note are the many construction and building photographs taken during the earliest phases of construction on the campus, as well as during the building period in the late 1970s and early 1980s. There are many images depicting the library, including a number of slides that show library teaching presentations. Also noteworthy are the depictions of campus events, which show a vast number of staff and students.

Science Labs Master

File includes correspondence, reports, minutes, and other documentation related to the construction of a new science facility. File name taken from original file title.

Academic Departments

Series C, Academic Departments, covers the years 1964 through 1991 and 2005. The academic departments at UTSC have changed drastically over the course of the university’s history. This series utilizes the current (as of 2013) academic structure, with the addition of three early programs (General Program, Extension, and Physical Education), to provide a framework based on academic subjects for arranging departmental material. Divisions and departments that are now defunct or which have been amalgamated into conglomerate departments are represented under the new department heading; however, a comprehensive list of all programs, current or defunct, for which material exists in the collection has been provided in the file list to aid in discovery. This list has been replicated in the scope and content note for each subseries below. The series includes course descriptions, course evaluations, course guides, handbooks, reports, and other materials. The series is divided into eighteen subseries based on the current academic structure of the university.

Faculty, Staff, and Associates

File includes an invitation to a Celebration of Distinguished Service at UTSC from 2005, procedures for academic appointments, a handbook for UofT staff, and a memorial service pamphlet for faculty member David Harford.

Photographs and Microforms

The series F. Photographs and Microforms covers the years 1965 to 1995 and 1999 to 2005. The collection, which mostly depicts the university and campus events and individuals, is a compilation of photographic materials that were taken by staff and students at UTSC for a variety of purposes. Faculty and Staff Organizations

The subseries D.9 Faculty and Staff Organizations covers the years 1965 through1991 and 2005. The subseries includes staff directories, meeting minutes, correspondence, reports, and other materials from the Faculty Association, Faculty Club, Staff Association, and various staff and faculty publications.

Watt's Lecture Series (1966- 2005)

File contains correspondence, programs for Partners in Development by L.B. Pearson, Science & Society by G. Herzberg, Can Your Life Become a Work of Art? By R. Moriyama, Corporate Power Today: The Image and the Reality by D. Lewis, and Healthy Weight: Healthy Life by Dr. S.V. Basrur, Human Spaces, Deadly Places by Dr. J. Orbinski, honorarium, and a survey.
