Report cards

File consists of one report card and two honour cards. The report card is for the school year 1948 - 1949 at St. Aloysius College, Nouwen's Gymnasium. This report card includes a certificate of honourable mention from July 1949 in the subjects Religion, Dutch, and Geography. The two honour cards are from the school year of 1944 - 1945 (Nouwen's first year at Gymnasium) for Nouwen having earned first place in his class in a subject. The first card recognizes Nouwen for Latin, and the second card for an unknown subject [Bijbljesch?].

Papers from Gymnasium

File consists of two essays handwritten by Nouwen while attending the Gymnasium. Essays include a summary on Gerard Brom, etc., and one entitled, “Salvation is Never Born in Noisiness" (possibly for a religion class or Dutch).

Item consists of a diploma from St. Aloysius College, Nouwen’s Gymnasium in The Hague. Document declares that Nouwen has favourably passed his exams, and is fully qualified to study at a university in Theology, Arts, Law and other faculties. It is signed by multiple people including Nouwen, using the name Harrie.

Gymnasium records

Sub-series consists of essays written by Nouwen during his years at Gymnasium - a grammar school in the Netherlands for students aged 12 to 18 years who aim to attend university. Top students would learn Latin and Greek.

Typescript on exegesis

File consists of a typescript on exegesis, which includes a biblical historiography, the pentateuch, the ark of the covenant, the route of the exodus, and the didactic books of the Old Testament. The header on the pages reads: "Rosendaal, 1952-'53."

Paper on De Mariadevotie van John Henry Newman

File consists of a handwritten draft of a paper by Nouwen, including his handwritten corrections, entitled, "De Mariadevotie van John Henri Newman" ("The Devout Marie by John Henry Newman"). File also contains a typescript version of the paper, again with corrections in Nouwen’s hand.

File consists of a draft typescript of an article entitled, "De Koningin van Ierland", that was likely partially published with several other articles by Nouwen about Ireland in 1956.

Travel journal from Ireland

File consists of a red exercise book containing a journal about Nouwen's trip to Ireland. Parts of this journal were published in articles about Ireland in 1956. Journal starts with an entry from August 15th. There also are reading notes in the journal, and notes on conversations. Some notations are in English. Mentioned in the journal are Neil O'Duffy (with reference to storytelling and fairy tales, local history, and customs), and other storytellers, with some notes on Irish tales. Also included are notes in English about synthetic coffee, with some of these notes in English.

Course notes on ethics

File consists of notes relating to a course on ethics, taught by Prof. van Boxtel during the 1955-1956 school year. The notes are typed and handwritten. Typed notes may have been written by J. Vossen.

File consists of one theology diploma from Corpus Studiosorum Nobiomagensium Carolus Magnus. This diploma is likely Nouwen's degree from the seminary, which he received after his ordination. The diploma has a raised red wax seal with a ribbon. Diploma is dated November 5, 1957.

Seminary diploma

Item consists of a certificate dated July 21, 1957, that is certifying Nouwen's graduation from the seminary. Certificate is signed by the rector of the Rijsenburg Seminary.

Materials relating to Rijsenburg Seminary

File consists of materials relating to Rijsenburg Seminary. This includes newspaper clippings on Rijsenburg Seminary, the events and students of Rijsenburg; programs from events for priests; typed notes on "vindicamus dagen" [restoration days] in Hilversum; a handwritten poem by Brigitta Bruisman in honour of "your" (presumably Nouwen's) ordination; a letter from J. Nieuwenhuis, editor of De Bazuin, thanking Nouwen for sending a copy of his article on Newman; handwritten notes by Nouwen;, and two letters to Nouwen, one from Paul Minchen, and the other from an unknown person.

Roland Society certificate

Item consists of a certificate with from the Roland Society at the University of Nijmegen (Studiosorum Noviomagensium), dated November 22, 1957. The certificate has a red wax seal with word ‘Roland’ inscribed in it and an impression of a drawing of a man with a sword.

Ordination material

File consists of material from Nouwen’s ordination ceremony on July 21, 1957 in Utrecht and on July 28, 1957 in Scheveningen, including reminder cards, dinner menu and two copies of a photograph of Nouwen as a child playing priest. File also includes copies of Nouwen's ordination certificates from 1955-1956.

Draft of Over twijfel enherkenning

File consists of a draft typescript of "Over Twijfel Enherkenning", a homily written by Nouwen in Heeswijk, The Netherlands, on June 2, 1957. The subject of this homily is Matthew 28: 16-20, and the theme of doubt.

Sub-series consists of essays and notes written by Nouwen during his time in the seminary. Nouwen spent 1950-1951 at the minor seminary at Apeldoorn, then spent 1951-1953 at the Diocesan Seminary in Rijsenburg, Holland, studying Philosophy, and 1953-1957 studying Theology. Nouwen was ordained on July 21, 1957.

Het teken van de tempel

File consists of typescript of a text titled "Het teken van de tempel" ["The Sign of the Temple"], likely written by Nouwen while he was at the Seminary. Cover page includes a quote in French of A. Leboisset on the mystery of the Temple.

File consists of course and reading notes on Asthma, as well as notes on Biecht. Paper is of varying sizes, and multiple pens were used. The notes are based on an internship at an asthma clinic for children. The notes, which are comprehensive also contain details about a "Sinterklass" party that Nouwen may have organized and attended at the clinic.
