Fonds consists of letters (1929-1962) that Gertrude Knighton's mother, Elizabeth (Lili) Louisa Boeschenstein, wrote to her mother, Emma Schoch-Walter, and her older sister, Emmeli Schoch; Lili Schoch's exercise books that she compiled to teach children [191-]; letters to her and Hermann Boeschenstein from their families in Switzerland, 1928- ca. 1947; correspondende between Hermann and Lili (1930-1955) and with their children, principally Frank and Gertrude (1944-1963). Includes a number of postcards and a few photographs. Many of the letters are written in German, and some in Old German.

Consists of a members book, minute books, ledger books, papers and other records of the University of Toronto Mathematical and Physical Society.

This fonds contains the personal and professional papers documenting the life and accomplishments of physicist John Satterly. Included is personal and professional correspondence, family documents, material related to Devon, England and its history; photoprints; course notes and related material such as certificates and diplomas from Satterly's days as a student; lecture notes; laboratory experiments; problem sets, examinations; textbooks; research notes; and publications which document his career as physicist at the University of Toronto.

Few administrative records of the Department of Physics from the first half of the twentieth century are available in the University Archives. As a result, this fonds provides documentation not only the life of the renowned physicist, but also of the teaching of Physics at the University of Toronto from 1912 to 1950 as well. The personal papers of other physicists already in the Archives compliment the Satterly fonds.

Correspondence relating to mathematics, lectures and trips that was received by Cecilia Krieger, lecturer in Mathematics and Physics. Krieger was the first woman to receive her Doctorate in Mathematics from the University of Toronto in 1930. Much of the correspondence is in polish and is from Waclaw Sierpinski, the Polish mathematician whose work she translated for her doctorate.

These personal records consist mainly of records documenting Clara Benson’s non-professional activities such as work with the Women’s Athletic Association of the University of Toronto, the YWCA and her relationship with family members and friends. The personal correspondence in Series 2 provides the most detailed information about her relationship with family, friends and activities. Letters from her parents and siblings provide an insight into her activities and progress at the University of Toronto during her undergraduate years. A few letters, however, will be found from colleagues at the university such as Prof. A.B. Macallum, Prof. Annie Laird and others.

Unfortunately documentation relating to her academic activities is limited to some correspondence and notes found in Series 5 relating to her efforts from 1920s onwards to have the Women’s Athletic Building built. Her early education in Port Hope is documented in the school books, essays and other records in Series 4. Series 4 also contains her framed diplomas for B.A. and Ph.D. No manuscripts of her publications, including her Ph D. thesis appear to have survived. The lecture notes in Series 7 do provide some indication of the content of her courses in food chemistry, and were probably used repeatedly, year after year.

Dr. Benson also recorded her travel and sightseeing activities both abroad and in Canada on film. Series 10 contains 50 rolls of 16mm film documenting her trips to Egypt (1926), England (1937 and late 1940’s and early 1950’s), South America (1939) and the United States (1939, 1948). Some of her leisure time, both while at the University of Toronto and after her retirement, was spent filming events and scenery in Toronto in general, and the University in particular, as well as her family at home in Port Hope.

Guest book, with photographs and correspondence pertaining to her retirement from the Department of Home Economics Education, Ontario College of Education (1964-65); tribute following her death (1980).

Personal records of Henry (Harry) Pullan, graduate in architecture in the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering (BASc 1911). The majority of records document reunions of the Class of 1911 (1930-1965 including minutes (1930-1960),correspondence of the Secretary-Treasurer, lists of class alumni, casualty lists of deceased class members, drafts of submissions to the newsletter "Ruminations" , and correspondence with the Engineering Alumni Association.

Photographs and negatives document 2nd year class of 1911, including several images of the Trienial Class reunions from 1957-1963. There is also a unique group photograph of the 2nd year class of 1911 taken in the drafting room. This was reproduced in Ruminations and includes a name key.

The Study was conducted for the Ontario Association of Housing Authorities through the School of Architecture. Scrapbook on forensic pathology compiled by Dr. William Deadman, city Pathologist for Hamilton from 1919 to 1956 and graduate of the University of Toronto, Faculty of Medicine, 1913. Scrapbook includes, notes and reports on topics such as suicide, criminal abortion, infanticide, rape, poisoning and many others.

Personal records of Muriel Uprichard, Associate Professor in the School of Nursing (1955-1965), with correspondence, student essays, publications and photographs. Includes files on the history of nursing education in Canada and abroad, the International Council of Nurses (1932-1951), the St. John Ambulance and other national organizations.

Training Guides written by 4th year students of the School of Physical and Health Education submitted in partial fulfillment of their degree. Topics cover a wide variety of sports and physical activities. They are original typescripts and some include original photographs.

Fonds consist of records related to Hart House Theatre's production of Ondine in November and December of 1966. Records were collected by Macdougall, who played "Second Lord" in the production as a first-year student at Victoria College. Records include a production programme autographed by the cast and Director William Hutt, clippings of reviews, and a copy of the Ondine script used and annotated by cast members.

Notes, minutes, memoranda, correspondence, notices, and reports relating to Ontario College of Education training courses, curriculum studies, and the activities of the Ontario Secondary Teachers Federation.

B2004-0008: This accession is largely made up of notebooks and loose notes taken by Byron A. Griffith while a student of Math and Physics and a lecturer in Applied Mathematics. Griffith went on to get a PhD. in Mathematics in 1936 and taught Applied Mathematics at the University of Toronto for over two decades. More notably, he played an early role in establishing the University of Toronto Computation Centre. Also included is Griffith's Ph.D. Thesis (1936), some correspondence including a letter from Josef Katz and a memoir entitled : "My Early Days in Toronto" which discusses, among other things, the early days of computers at the University of Toronto. Parts of this was published in the IEEE Annals of History of Computing, (Vol 16, no. 2 p.55-64). (1 box, 1928-1966)

Personal records documenting the career of Joseph McCulley, Headmaster of Pickering College (1927-1947), Deputy Commissioner of Penitentiaries (1947-1952) and Warden of Hart House (1952-1965); includes personal correspondence, student course notes, scrapbooks, and photographs. Papers also include minutes and correspondence relating to various committees and associations in which McCulley was active such as the YMCA War Services Committee (1947-50) and the United Nations Association (1966-1967). Records not only document Hart House but would be of interest to researchers investigating penitentiary reform, juvenile delinquency and the education of youths.

Includes correspondence as a student, a lecture given to a class of Harold Innis', who, during their student days, was a roommate of Duff's. Also includes graduation diploma and 1 graduation photograph, along with his C.V. from the 1950s. (3 boxes, 1914-1955)

B1999-0020: Includes: Diary and related photo album covering a large part of Duff's work in China as a teacher at a mission (1921-1924, 1926) - photo album also contains photos after 1926 when he left China, documenting travels throughout England and Ontario. A second photo photo album covers his student days at the University of Toronto 1914-1918, while he was at the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering. Also includes biographical items detailing his work with H.W. Price in the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering and with the Hydro-electric Commission of Ontario including photographs of an automatic regulator designed by Price and Duff. Records accumulated by Ruth Northcott, largely in her capacity as a member of the executive committee of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada and as editor of its Journal. Included are minutes of meetings, correspondence, notes, research data, drafts of articles and addresses, announcements, press clippings, and photographs.

This fonds contains the personal papers of Prof. Fritz Moritz Heichelheim, mainly while professor of classics at the University of Toronto (1948-1968) and in academic positions at Universities in Britain such as Cambridge and Nottingham University.

The largest series (Series 1) contains correspondence spanning 46 years received from friends, family and colleagues living in North America as well as Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Correspondence is in mostly English and German depending on the language of the writer. Some of Prof. Heichelheim’s outgoing replies will be found scrawled on the back of the incoming letter or as a separate documents. The completeness of this series documents Prof. Heichelheim’s wide interest in classical studies, numismatics and papyri translation. Other series document some of his teaching and research activities, mainly at universities in England as well as his literary works on Roman and Greek history also in both English and German. No manuscripts for his major books such as his published thesis in the 1930’s or his collaborative works such as A history of the Roman people (1962) with C. A. Yeo have been found.

His extensive work in numismatics however will be found in Series 5. This series contains the manuscript and photographs for his catalogue Sylloge Nummorum Graecorum Vol. IV of the General and Leake Collections at the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge produced mainly during the late 1930’s to the 1950s. Records in this series provide some documentation on the joint project of University of Toronto and Heichelheim’s previous employer, the University of Giessen in Germany. This project directed by Prof. Heichelheim during the 1950s dealt with the translation and publication of the Giessen papyrus and ostraka (handwriting on pottery).
