Fonds consists of eleven series documenting in varying degrees the personal, professional and academic activities of Dr. Andrew James Rhodes, professor of microbiology and former Director, University of Toronto School of Hygiene. While there is some documentation relating to his life prior to and during his appointment as Director, University of Toronto School of Hygiene, the bulk of the records in this accession document his activities and employment after 1970. Series 6 and 9 document his employment with the Ontario provincial government, first as Medical Director, Laboratory Services Branch, Ministry of Health ( 1970-1977) and then as Chairman of the Rabies Advisory Committee, Ministry of Natural Resources (1979-1988). While he was employed outside the University of Toronto for nearly twenty years, he continued his teaching responsibilities and occasionally undertook special projects such as the University Teaching Hospitals survey (Series 8) and the U. of T. Biosafety Committee (Series 7).

While Dr. Rhodes was well known for his scholarly publications on bacteriology and virology, manuscripts of these publications are not contained in this accession [2]. However, Series 11 does contain records for Within Reach of Everyone. A history of the University of Toronto School of Hygiene and the Connaught Laboratories which he co-authored with Dr. Paul Bator. Two volumes of this history were published in 1990 and 1995 respectively. Correspondence, research materials, and page proofs for Volume 1 predominate, within only a few files regarding plans for Volume 2.

[2] In 1940 Dr. Rhodes, with Dr. C.E. van Rooyen published Virus Diseases of Man. In 1949, they again collaborated on Textbook of virology for students and practicioners of medicine and other health sciences. This book which was produced in 5 editions over the next few years established the University of Toronto School of Hygiene as the centre for medical virology in the world.

The fonds is comprised of material relating to Patterson's teaching activities at Trinity College, including correspondence, manuscripts of his writings and publications, thesis notes, materials for lectures and research materials. The fonds also contains family papers which include material on the people and events of Paris, Ontario, in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, including records relating to the immigration of Home Children to Canada.

B1994-0028: Correspondence, addresses, a report authored by Hughes regarding pharmaceutical education in Newfoundland and copies of a column he wrote regarding student life at the Ontario College of Pharmacist in "Drug Merchandising" (1928). Also includes several scrap books containing correspondence, awards, photographs, press clippings, programs and other memorabilia documenting Dr. Hughes' achievements. (4 boxes, 1929-1993)

Personal records of Cope Weir Schwenger (M.D. 1948; D.P.H. 1954) documenting his career as a professor in the School of Hygiene (1959-1975) and the Faculty of Medicine (1975-1990). Schwenger had a distinguished career as a specialist in public health, preventitive medicine, and gerontology.

Correspondence, diaries, greeting cards, photographs, lists of contents of library, obituaries, letters of condolence, and other material documenting the lives of Crawford Brough (C.B.) and Kathleen (Kay) Macpherson and the professional activities of C.B. Macpherson as professor of political science at the University of Toronto. B2019-0044 includes correspondence (1943-1954) documenting their courtship and the early years of their marriage.

Collection includes large black and white photographs and several scrapbooks related to the life and work of Sam Tata.

Records of the Fraser family, principally William Henry Fraser, Professor of Italian and Spanish, and his wife, Helene and two of their children, Donald Thomas and Frieda Helen, both professors in the School of Hygiene. Fonds also contains the records of Frieda Fraser's lifetime companion, Edith (Bud) Bickerton Williams, a veterinarian, including extensive correspondence between Frieda and Bud that documents their personal lives as a same-sex couple, as well as their professional lives as women in medicine in the early 20th century. The correspondence has been noted for its significance both in terms of both Canadian lesbian history and the history of medicine. [1]

Fonds consists of 4 accessions of records documenting Professor Drummond's academic career, from his years as a doctoral student at Yale to his final years as professor of economics at the University of Toronto. Personal and professional correspondence, manuscripts of both published and unpublished works including books, articles, papers and presentations, research materials and teaching materials document his contribution to the study of economic history relating to Canada and other commonwealth countries as well as Europe. Also includes some records relating to his administrative activities at the University of Toronto, which will be found in Series 5, 15, 16 and in correspondence contained in Series 2 and 3 of accessions B1995-0013 & B1996-0026.

This accession was acquired by UTARMS in October 1991 from Prof. Edward L. Shorter. Arranged in four series, the accession consists primarily of correspondence bracketing the years 1966-1988. Series 1 is made up of three files devoted to Shorter's curriculum vitae, University of Toronto appointments and research grants and proposals. Series 2, the major portion of the accession, consists of professional and private correspondence. Series 3 is comprised of a single annotated book edited by Shorter. Series 4 is five strips of photo negatives of Edward L. Shorter dating from about the mid-1970's.

Fonds consist of correspondence with friends and Trinity associates, newspaper clippings, photographs, ephemera, and information on people such as Charles F. Pashler, George Ignatieff, and William Wright. Files include extensive information on the Theological Education Sundays project. Also included is a file with information on the ordination of women into the Anglican Church.

Three items relating to George Harcourt who was a member of the second graduating class (1889) of the Bachelor of Science in Agriculture (BSA) programme, consisting of his diploma, a photograph of him in academic dress taken while head of the Department of Horticulture at the University of Alberta (1915-1936), and a copy of an article about him from "Alberta History" (summer 1991).

Collection contains correspondence, copies of sources, notes, illustrations, photographs, microfilms, and other working papers for Ezra Schabas's book Theodore Thomas : America's conductor and builder of orchestras, 1835-1905 (University of Indiana Press, 1989). The collection also contains articles and lecture notes for presentations written by Schabas about Thomas.

Collection Includes: family correspondence, holograph and printed volumes, albums of plates; also transcriptions and introductions by William A. Harshaw.

Collection consists of correspondence between the Music Library and various individuals, including students, staff, faculty, librarians, and other researchers; photographs of the library space and collections; materials pertaining to special projects at the library; and memorabilia collected over the years.

Collection consists of manuscripts from various sources relating to the Spanish Civil War and to various anti-Franco organizations in Canada and the United States to support the Republican cause. Included are manuscripts; correspondence; scrapbooks containing clippings, correspondence, documents and prints; and records relating to the fiftieth anniversary of the Spanish Civil War including photographs, memorabilia, awards and audio recordings.

This accession contains mainly correspondence, photographs, memorabilia and diplomas from all three members of the family. Of particular note are the diaries of Sir J.C. McLennan for the last two years of his life as well as well as geological field notebooks and expense books.

Fonds consists of pamphlets and other material from Trinity College including programs and newspaper articles. Also includes a photocopy of Delaney’s thesis “Gore’s Landing: Community and Church”. Photographs and correspondence are also included.

Papers consist of editorial files for Impulse magazine from 1975-1990. Files for each volume include submissions to the journal, drafts with editorial corrections and page proofs. Many files include additional editorial material, such as advertising, cover art, rejected submissions and correspondence. The collection includes an office archive, which contains correspondence, financial information (with grant proposals), advertising and promotional material, and circulation and distribution records. There is a large number of original art boards and other oversized materials, such as posters. The editorial records of I Shot Mussolini by Eldon Garnet is also included along with related correspondence.

Fonds consists of extensive correspondence from Dr Walters to his parents, his brother and sister from 1925 to 1945, when he wrote home every few days. They cover student life at Queen's University and more extensively at Trinity College, his working experiences on a Great Lakes steamer, his early married life, his experiences during the Second World War and his career as a doctor.

Collection includes correspondence; manuscripts, typescripts and some galley proofs of the work of Earle Birney; teaching materials; some Malcolm Lowry material; typescripts of other Canadian authors; scrapbooks and memorabilia.

Fonds consists of the personal records of S. D. Clark, the first chair of Sociology at the University of Toronto, and selected personal records of his friend and colleague, Professor Oswald Hall, that Professor Clark had retained.

Most of the records in this fonds document Harris' research in the history of Higher Education, a subject on which he published widely and gave numerous addresses. Some limited documentation provides researchers with some information on his contributions to several administrative posts. There are also early lecture files on English literature which document his early teaching career and some files relating to the researching and writing of the university history although most of those records are in the records of the University Historian. Finally there are original university records collected by Harris regarding the University of Toronto Faculty Association and its predecessors.

This fonds consists of three series, divided primarily by subject matter and reflecting Clery’s working division of his files. The series are: ‘Monographs’, ‘Print Journalism’, and ‘CBC Radio and Television’.

The first series, ‘Monographs’, includes notes, clippings, book outlines, correspondence, book drafts, file cards, and promotional material related to various publishing projects undertaken by Clery.

The second series, ‘Print Journalism’, includes interviews, typescripts, offprints, correspondence, financials, and clippings related to Clery’s work on: Books in Canada, On The Town, the Royal Commission on Book Publishing, Seasons of Canada, Socialist Commentary, Yorker, Moses Znaimer, and Canadian Publishing generally.

The third series, ‘CBC Radio Television’, includes textual records related generally to Clery’s association with CBC and specifically to Clery’s work on As it Happens, An Act of God, Browndale, For All The Good Intentions, The Trains, Ballad of the Bicycle, and Metro Morning. B2013-0020: 1910-1918: Documents, photographs and artifacts document three generations of the Peterkin - Williamson family. Most of the items relate to Marie Peterkin (B.A. 1919) including a photo album with family photos, photos of fellow students, house parties in Bala and the Toronto Island, convocation,, fellow female workers on break at the munitions factory during World War I. There are also a few items for Ruby Peterkin, aunt to Marie Peterkin, who served in Salinika as nurse in the No. 4 Canadian General Hospital. There are a few photos including two from Salonika as well as an engraved letter opener from her time overseas. Marie Peterkin married John Williamson (B.A. 1910) and their daughter is the donor of this accession Mary Williamson (B.A. 1955). This accession includes the graduating portrait for each as well as two UT letters earned by Mary.

B2014-0013: Photo album originally belonged to John D. Williamson (B.A. 1910) and documents various members and activities of the Williamson family members. Photos show campus views of grounds and students ca. 1906 – 1917 as well as a trip to western Canada 1912, and to Temagami 1916 and 1917. There are also two portraits of J.Peter Williamson, son of John D. Williamson.

B2017-0015: Includes 60th Anniversary Distinguished Graduate Award medal, won by Mary Williamson, alumnus of the Faculty of Library and Information Science. Includes accompanying photograph and letter. One photograph of Marie Peterkin (Williamson) taken ca. 1950 with former U.C. classamate Vida Peene (U.C. 1919). Finally there are a series of photographer proof portraits of J.Peter Williamson in military uniform, 1951.

B2019-0026: Consists of Two binders of collected documents on Marie Peterkin (B.A. 1919) and John Williamson (B.A. 1910) including memoriabilia, legal documents, photographs, diaires, correspondence and some family histories. This accession also has a photo album documenting the couple's trips to Bermuda and Florida in the 1950s and 1960s. There are two oversized certificates for John Williamson.
