George Elliot Clarke Papers

This accession of George Elliott Clarke’s papers contains extensive email correspondence from 2015 to 2018, as well as personal
correspondence, notes, invitations and letters. There is material related to published and upcoming books, most notably including
holograph notebooks for Canticles I, II, III and Portia White. As well as an early draft of The Motorcyclist and a film script co-written
with William D. MacGillvray based on George and Rue. Contains a draft, agreement and correspondence for GEC’s memoir, which
will be published by Alfred A. Knopf. Accession contains a large number of word processed academic articles and lectures, as well as
material related to Clarke’s role as a Professor at the University of Toronto. This accession includes poetry, articles and interviews
from Clarke’s time as the Parliamentary Poet Laureate (2016-2017), as well as poetry written during the period of 2015 to 2018,
including those sent by email. Records also contain research material, primarily as photocopied journals, articles and books, on the
topic of Black history, specifically in Nova Scotia. There is also poetry and other writing by other authors, which is primarily sent to
Clarke for revision or comments. In particular, there is a significant amount of information related to Rienzi Crusz.

Alan Stein Papers

This is the third accession of Alan Stein’s Papers by the Fisher. Much of the material relates to
Stein’s work as a bookmaker, illustrator and printmaker in the production of the fine press book
On Spirit Lake. It contains original illustrations, engraved woodblocks, and design notes, as well
as administrative records such as grant applications, invoices and correspondence between the
authors who contributed to the book. This collection also includes material produced by Stein’s
fine press imprint Church Street Press such as broadsides, pamphlets, bookmarks,
advertisements, and posters.

Bruce Whiteman Papers

This collection consists of two accession of Bruce Whiteman’s papers (2018, 2019). The accessions are separated into two separate
sections, each with their own series. This includes material related to Whiteman’s personal and family history, specifically
photographs, albums and scrapbooks pertaining to his mother, June Whiteman, as well as a significant amount of material related to
his uncle, Sydney Charles Whiteman. As well as Whiteman’s personal diaries and notebooks. Also included is material related to
Whiteman’s professional life as a writer and poet, most specifically with drafts, proofs and published versions of his poetry, articles
and reviews. Also featured within this accession is material pertaining to Whiteman’s work as a teacher, specifically at the
Scattergood Friends School in Iowa, as well as the School of Continuing Education at the University of Toronto.

Tripe Family Papers

This accession of the Tripe Family Papers includes correspondence, documents, photographs, and genealogical materials relating to descendants of Emily (Tripe) James 1817-1850, as well as photographs, documents and heraldry material pertaining to both ancestors and descendants of Emily's brother Alfred Tripe 1818-1854. Correspondence, written in England, Hawaii, and mainland America, relates to Emily's grandchildren, specifically William Francis James (1861-1944), Caroline Laura James (1861-1941) and Emma Polglase (James) Stevens Edwardes (1867-1958), and their mother Caroline Sophia (Beaumont) James (1842-1927) as well as the descendants of William Francis James, particularly Francis Leicester James (1888-1977). The letters describe several visits by family members to others in England and Hawaii, as well as ongoing correspondence between the James family in Hawaii, England, and India. Of note, are descriptions and observations of travel through mainland America, a first-hand account of the 1911 Delhi Durbar, discussions of the First and Second World Wars, and the fate of an oil portrait of James James (1800) by John Opie. James family documents include rare postcards of India from 1905-1913, the majority acquired and distributed to family members by Edith (James) Storrs (1873-1940). Xerox copies in this accession of two manuscripts written by William Francis James on his experiences immigrating to the United States in the 1880s, his service with Roosevelt’s Rough Riders in Cuba during the Spanish-American War, and subsequent service as an Assistant Surgeon in the Philippines 1899-1903 can be compared with his original letters about these experiences in Tripe Family Papers 2016 (MS Coll 00050A). There is also a typescript manuscript written by William Francis James’ daughter, Naomi (James) Hart (1898-2001) on the James’ family experience of immigrating to Hawaii. Photographs depict descendants of the James family taken by Janet Dewan on trips to England and Hawaii in the 1970s and 1980s, as well as original historical photographs of James descendants taken in 1916 and 1929, and copies of historical James photographs made by Janet Dewan in 1985. Tripe material in this collection includes the metal seal bearing the crest and motto of Cornelius Tripe (1785-1860) and a wax rubbing made of the monumental inscription to William Tripe (died 1681) and Margaret his wife (died 1690) in the Parish church of All Saints, Kenton, Devon. Also included is material related to the military service of Alfred King Tripe (1887-1917), and Philip Valentine King Tripe (1918-1982), as well as five draft typescripts of memories, typed and hand-corrected by Marian F.K (Tripe) Ade (1915-2010), regarding family history, immigration, and military involvement.

Judith Robertson Papers

This third accession of Judith Robertson’s papers is made up of two major components: material relating to the life and work of Canadian diplomat Charles Ritchie, and material relating to Robertson’s family, and to her own work. The Charles Ritchie material includes some of his original correspondence with his niece, Elizabeth Ritchie, along with extensive diary entries (1920-1973), made while he was working abroad with the Canadian Department of External Affairs. This collection also contains a number of original photographs from the same period, featuring numerous noteworthy Canadians, along with material relating to Ritchie’s literary estate. Also included are a number of books and periodicals owned by Ritchie, as well as a number of Irish novelist Elizabeth Bowen’s published works, inscribed to Ritchie by Bowen.

The material relating to Judith Robertson revolves mainly around her work as the executor of Charles Ritchie’s literary estate, as well as around her role as co-editor of the work Love's Civil War: Elizabeth Bowen and Charles Ritchie (Toronto: McClelland & Stewart, 2008). In addition, this collection includes correspondence and documents kept by Norman A. Robertson, Judith Robertson’s father, who also worked as a diplomat in the Department of External Affairs with Charles Ritchie.

Eric Ormsby Papers

Includes correspondence, drafts of essays, articles, lectures, curriculum units for Ismaili Institute course, translations and other material related to the life and work of poet, librarian and scholar Eric Ormsby. Ormsby won the prestigious World Book Award of the Islamic Republic of Iran, 2014, for his translation of Between Reason and Revelation: twin wisdoms reconciled: an annotated English translation of Nasir-I Khusraw’s Kitab-I Jami’ al-hikmatayn. Also includes early drawings, 1950s, a book proposal for a children’s book on pets, illustrated by his brother, Allan, as well as other early material. Notebooks contain ideas and early drafts of poems and short pieces, as well as more contemporary colour sketches.

Eric Wright Papers

Includes, variously, drafts and edited drafts of published and unpublished works, correspondence, reviews, notes, and other material related to a number of short stories and the following novels: “The Kidnapping of Rosie Dawn”, “A Likely Story”, “Finding Home”, “Dempsey’s Lodge”, and “The Land Mine” (1998-2015). Also includes business correspondence with, and royalty reports from publishers, correspondence and other materials related to a proposed film/television adaptation of “The Night the Gods Smiled”, a number of clippings of Wright’s short stories and essays that appeared in magazines and newspapers (including three translated stories from European publications), clippings of feature articles about or mentioning Wright from newspapers and magazines, and cassette tapes containing interviews with Wright and a 1985 CBC reading of “The Night the Gods Smiled” (1984-2015). This collection also includes some personal correspondence, fan mail, photographs, and memorabilia (193?-199?), personal/travel journals ranging between 1976 and 2010, and appointment calendars for 1991- 2015.
