A collection of holograph letters between General Wolfe and his parents, detailing recounts of his military operations.

Bliss Carman Papers

Contains an incomplete handwritten draft of April Airs: A Book of New England Lyrics (1916), which was published by Small, Maynard Publishers, Boston. The poems are primarily handwritten, as well as some previously published poems which are pasted on to loose-leaf paper. All poems are signed and some include edits or editorial remarks in the hand of Bliss Carman. Collection contains a small amount of material sent to R.T Hale, an editor at Small, Maynard, by Bliss Carmen including a photograph with a dedication to Hale, a letter and two signed copies of Four Sonnets (1916), printed by Small, Maynard Publishers.

David Dunlap Observatory Scrapbook

David Dunlap Observatory scrapbook was prepared in 1934 by Jessie Donalda Dunlap for her son as a Christmas gift. The scrapbook contains letters, printed articles, clippings and photographs documenting the David Dunlap Observatory from its initial conception through it's construction and opening.

The Scrapbook, which measures 22" x 38" when open, was donated by the Dunlap family to the David Dunlap Observatory in 1968 where it resided in the main entrance of the Administration Building until 2008.

Niagara Falls Suspension Bridge Papers

The Niagara Falls Suspension Bridge fonds consists primarily of textual records that document the developmental phases and operation of the Niagara Falls Suspension Bridge, and the administrative activities of the Niagara Falls Suspension Bridge Company and the Niagara Falls International Bridge Company Joint Board of Directors.

As these records document the lifespan of the Niagara Falls Suspension Bridge from conception to destruction, they also show the operational progress and administrative history of the conjoined bridge company and Board of Directors. Included is a large collection of handwritten letters and early telegram correspondence authored by and addressed to various members of the Joint Board of Directors, engineers, attorneys, and representatives from the Great Western Railroad Company and the New York, Lake Erie, and Western Railroad Company. Of note is the glut of professional correspondence between William Hamilton Merritt, Charles Brydges, William Swan, and various engineers involved with the concept, construction, and renewals of the Niagara Falls Suspension Bridge, including Charles Ellet, Jr., Samuel Keefer, John Augustus Roebling, and Leffert Lefferts Buck.

The fonds also includes textual records that document financial and business transactions between the conjoined bridge company, engineers, and merchants. Many of the latter bear historical company letterheads and insignia, including those of the Detroit Bridge and Ironworks Co., the Hamilton Bridge and Tool Company, the First National Bank of Albion (NY), and the Grand Trunk and Great Western Railroads. Further records document the internal administration of the conjoined bridge company and the interactions of the Board of Directors and executives, including internal financial records, engineering drafts, and executive meeting reports. In the interest of provenance, a small amount of ephemeral material, including photographs, postcards, stamps, and miscellaneous correspondence addressed to Glenn C. Way of 1631 Niagara Avenue, Niagara Falls, New York (1902 -1917), Charles H. Stringer (Clifton Hotel Accountant) of 1259 Heywood Avenue, Niagara Falls, Ontario, and c/o the Clifton Hotel (1902 -1931) is also maintained within the fonds.

Collection of family papers and photographs; correspondence with Margaret Atwood concerning their collaboration on the design and printing of five of her books, 1964-1980; and drafts and working copies of the books; his paintings and other activities.

Tripe Family Papers

This collection is comprised of correspondence, documents, photographs and art works, and genealogical materials from England, India, the U.S.A, Cuba, the Philippines, and Canada, dating from 1838-1999, and related to Alfred Tripe (1818-1854), his sister Emily (Tripe) James (1817-1850), their first cousin Mary Broad (Tripe) De Rusett (1820-1898), and their relatives and descendants. Correspondence includes an extended series written 1866-1903 by William Francis James, highlighted by letters during his service with Roosevelt’s Rough Riders in Cuba in 1898. Nineteenth-century images include four art works, 100 cartes-de-visite and thirty-three cabinet or larger size family portraits. The genealogical material consists of a comprehensive Tripe pedigree compiled in the 1980s and 1990s, a James Family Tree c1880, and four related pedigrees. The collection also documents the development of a family fairy tale, composed in India in 1878, edited in England c1914, and fully illustrated in Canada in 1992.

Elizabeth Hughes Papers

The collection largely consists of letters written by Hughes to her mother describing her activities and giving information about her health and diabetic condition. The letters dating from August to November 1922 describe Hughes' experiences in Toronto where she was treated with insulin by F.G. Banting. The collection also contains photographs of Hughes and her family, dating from 1907 to 1951.

William Stewart Wallace Papers

Contains articles on historical subjects; biographies for his Dictionary of North American authors; personal correspondence; correspondence for the Royal Society of Canada, the Encyclopedia of Canada, and the Canadian Society for the Protection of Science and Learning, ca. 1920-1940-.

Leonard Cohen Papers

Includes extensive materials related to Leonard Cohen’s early writing and publications, both poetry and prose, as well as some plays and television play scripts. There are multiple drafts of many poems from Cohen’s undergraduate years through his mid-late 20s, both typescript (many with holograph revisions) and holograph. There are similar drafts of prose: short stories, and
prose fragments, from the same period. Many of these writings became the basis for Cohen’s publications. Also included are materials directly related to the publication of Let Us Compare Mythologies, The Spice Box of Earth, The Favorite Game, Flowers for Hitler, and The Death of a Lady’s Man, including typescripts, page proofs, and correspondence with publishers and literary agents. There is also correspondence with friends, mentors, and colleagues, as well as some fan mail from 1967-68.

Stillman Drake Collection of A. B. Johnson Papers

Contains typed manuscripts made by Drake with holograph notes of A.B. Johnson (1786-1897) pamphlets which he had been unable to buy because of their scarcity; correspondence with Johnson's descendants, scholars, and other Johnson collectors about Johnson, and the 1967 Johnson centennary conference in Uticah, N.Y. Many of Johnson's pamphlets are in the A. B. Johnson Collection.

Papers include: correspondence to Hunter from Thoreau MacDonald (some with original illustrations), Hunter's drafts and editorial correspondence relating to his articles and books on the MacDonalds, and his research materials on both artists, including notes, indexes, articles by others on their work, catalogues, clippings, reviews and reproductions.

William Arthur Deacon Correspondence

Series consists of correspondence sent and received by William Arthur Deacon on literary subjects, particularly in
regards to Canadian literature. Passive correspondence and carbon copies of active correspondence with authors, publishers, organizations and readers relates primarily to the professional activities of William Arthur Deacon, including the reviews he wrote for Saturday Night and The Mail and Empire (amalgamated as The Globe and Mail); his participation within literary organizations such as the Canadian Authors’ Association (C.A.A.); publicity for his own books; biographical information and photographs of Canadian authors.

Collection includes original colour sketches of costume designs for shows designed by Frances Dafoe: 1. West Side Story for Banff Festival of the Arts, 1984. '27 mounted and 4 rough. Also included - copy of the playbill, the script and photostats with instructions to the cutters' 2. Kiss Me Kate for Banff Festival of the Arts, 1985. '27 colour mounted plus 18 black and white for a special scene using only black and white copies of the original sketches. There are also 7 quick colour drawings for tights.' 3. The Heart's a Wonder, The Irish Play Society, 1971. '2 colour sketches mounted. Included reviews and Playbill.' Some sketches have sample textile swatches attached.
