Photographs and Microforms

The series F. Photographs and Microforms covers the years 1965 to 1995 and 1999 to 2005. The collection, which mostly depicts the university and campus events and individuals, is a compilation of photographic materials that were taken by staff and students at UTSC for a variety of purposes. External Sources of Information

The series E. External Sources of Information covers the years 1956 and 1960 to 2007. The series contains items that are relevant to UTSC’s history and operations but were not created at the university or by university bodies. The materials have been placed in subseries based on their institution of origin or a perceived similarity in use. There are nine subseries in series E.

Audio recordings

Series consists of audio recordings of works by Talivaldis Kenins, including some recordings of performances conducted by Kenins and some world premieres. Many of the recordings were made for CBC broadcast. Others were performed at the University of Toronto. The series also includes three audio cassettes from a 1996 program on CJRT-FM that featured an interview with Kenins interspersed with recordings of his compositions, and recordings of Kenins' son George Juris Kenins performing the cello.

Services

Series D, Services, covers the years 1949 and 1952 through 2009. The university provides many services for faculty, staff, and students. The series is has been arranged base on the department providing services (i.e. the library); some smaller service providers are grouped together based on a common target audience (i.e. faculty and staff organizations). The series is divided into ten subseries.

Postmortem documents

Series consists of documents created after Leslie Bell's death, including letters of condolence written to his wife Leona Bell; copies of his obituaries; and, documents pertaining to the Leslie Bell Scholarship, which was established in his name by the Leslie Bell Singers Alumnae in 1971. The award was created to support choral conductors further their professional careers and enhance their conducting abilities. The award is managed by the Ontario Arts Council (OAC).

Teaching materials

Series consists of examination papers set, lecture notes, and student papers from Kenins's time at the Faculty of Music, University of Toronto.

Concerts

Series consists of materials produced by the Aldeburgh Connection for each of their concerts, including the Sunday Afternoon Concert Series, held at Walter Hall, Faculty of Music, University of Toronto (1982-2013); the Recital Series at the Glenn Gould Studio, Toronto (1993-2013); the Discovery Series (also called the Young Artists Series), held at Walter Hall (1998-2011); the Bayfield Festival of Song (2007-2012); and various concerts performed on tour in North America and Great Britain. Each file contains the records created and used in the production of the concert, including promotional materials (programs, posters, and pamphlets); correspondence with musicians, sponsors, and venues; newspaper clippings of concert reviews; contracts with performers and venues; research notes; narrative scripts for the Sunday Afternoon Concert Series; scores annotated by Stephen Ralls and Bruce Ubukata; arrangements and transpositions of songs; stage, set, and lighting designs; subscriber lists; and ticket sales records.

Teaching and performance materials

Series consists of materials created by J. Churchill Arlidge in the course of his teaching and performance career, including sheet music with added vocal parts, written in his own hand, a practice record booklet that he published in Toronto in 1907, and the script and program for a concert that he gave in the 1880s.

Microfilms

Series consists of microfilm copies of scrapbooks, correspondence, and programs relating to Theodore Thomas's career, which Ezra Schabas used for the biography Theodore Thomas : America's conductor and builder of orchestras, 1835-1905.

Other correspondence

Series consists of personal and professional correspondence, including letters from and to many Canadian musicians and composers.

Ontario College of Art projects

Series consists of Udo Kasemets's notebooks, posters, and plans for projects at the Ontario College of Art (OCA). Series also contains Kasemets's OCA teaching materials and notes.

Academic Departments

Series C, Academic Departments, covers the years 1964 through 1991 and 2005. The academic departments at UTSC have changed drastically over the course of the university’s history. This series utilizes the current (as of 2013) academic structure, with the addition of three early programs (General Program, Extension, and Physical Education), to provide a framework based on academic subjects for arranging departmental material. Divisions and departments that are now defunct or which have been amalgamated into conglomerate departments are represented under the new department heading; however, a comprehensive list of all programs, current or defunct, for which material exists in the collection has been provided in the file list to aid in discovery. This list has been replicated in the scope and content note for each subseries below. The series includes course descriptions, course evaluations, course guides, handbooks, reports, and other materials. The series is divided into eighteen subseries based on the current academic structure of the university.

Photographs of musicians

Series consists of photographs of Canadian and European musicians from the early 1900s, as well as Giuliana Gattoni's collection of publicity photographs from the late 1980s and early 1990s, which predominantly consists of photographs of Canadian Opera Company productions.

Audio and video recordings

Series consists of audio and video recordings from the Duke Ellington Society; Ron Collier’s Ellington lectures at Humber College (1980s); and, performances by the Ron Collier Tentet.

Photographic Prints

Series C: Photographic Prints contains all of photograph prints that were housed in paper folders and filing cabinets in the office of Ken Jones. The folders were arranged by subject. For the most part, folders are labelled by subject but the folders and some photographs were out of order when the records were transferred to UTSC Library. In some cases, folders contain photos that do not reflect the subject of the original folder label.

Series contains sheet music relating to projects with the Finkleman Show. Publicity, correspondence, and various other documents

Series consists of newspaper articles by and about Leslie Bell, concert programs, scrapbooks, documents from the Canadian Music Educators' Association (CMEA), and photographs. Bell wrote a column for the Toronto Star from 1950 until 1961, and many of his columns are included in this series. The CMEA documents are included as Bell was a founder of the association and its executive director from 1959 until his death in 1962. He also edited the Canadian Music Educator journal during that time. The series also contains a file of correspondence, photographs, and certificates for Bell's son L. Richard Bell.

Recording projects

Series consists of correspondence, rehearsal schedules, recording take lists, budgets, and research notes, regarding the production of the Aldeburgh Connection’s recording projects, including one cassette and six compact discs. The albums include recordings from various Aldeburgh Connection concerts, recordings with musicians featured in these concerts, and recordings of compositions commissioned by the Aldeburgh Connection.

Other activities

Series consists of administrative writings, correspondence, reviews, radio programs, and other documents relating to John Beckwith’s work at the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, the University of Toronto, and various other appearances at conferences, symposiums, and universities. Series also includes writings related to his publications.

Correspondence and family records

Series consists of letters to J. Churchill Arlidge concerning his performances; family correspondence; Arlidge's wedding certificate; and a jewel pendant that belonged to his mother.

Negative and Contact sheets

Series B: Negatives and Contact Sheets contains all of the negatives and contact sheets that were housed in binders in the office of Ken Jones. The binders were arranged by year and usually labelled with the year and the sequential number of each negative sheet and corresponding contact sheet, i.e. Binder 1968 (now file 2012-001B-2:2) contains negatives 181-225.

Legacy databases called “David’s database” and “Photomatica” document the subjects associated with each contact sheet. Contact the archivist to access an emulation of these databases and search through them. All subject keywords recorded on the photographs are also transcribed in each file’s “Media/Content Notes” field.

Covers of the original binders have been photocopied and stored in a file with the corresponding photographs.

Promotional events and free concerts

Series consists of records pertaining to various promotional events and free concerts produced by the Aldeburgh Connection. The series includes materials for one concert by Stephen Ralls and Bruce Ubukata prior to the official formation of the Aldeburgh Connection concert series, “Opera in the Drawing Room” (January 14, 1979). Each file consists of programs, scripts, scores annotated by Ralls and Ubukata, set and lighting designs, posters, and reviews.
