Books about Nouwen

Sub-series consists of four books written between 1985 and 1994 about Nouwen or containing a chapter about Nouwen. The two books written in 1994 represent student theses-like material on Nouwen's life. The other two books reflect on the lives of many individuals; Nouwen is represented in one chapter of each book. The books have been described at the item level.

As well, Nouwen also provided introductions, forewords, prefaces, and recommendations to many books also included in this subseries. In addition to the books are photocopies of Nouwen's contributions to two other books not owned by the Archives. Paper notes and inscriptions within the books suggest that many of the books were given to Nouwen from the authors or publishers.

Books by Nouwen

Sub-series consists of hard and soft cover books or booklets written by Nouwen or containing Nouwen's words, published between 1969 and 1996. The Archives has a variety of editions, printings and translations of his books. It is not certain how Nouwen obtained most of the English versions since, other than a handful of presentation copies, few were personally inscribed to him. Although it may be presumed that some were publisher gifts, since many of the books still have their price tags, it is possible that they were purchased by Nouwen or his associates.

Religious artifacts

Sub-series consists of religious artifacts owned by Henri Nouwen but not a part of the collected materials from his office, including psalms and prayers, rosary beads, stoles, vessels, large wooden crucifix, a tabernacle, and a gold chalice.

Orbis Books files

Sub-series consists of seven files which deal with Nouwen's personal and professional dealings with Orbis Books, a publishing company located in Maryknoll, New York. Much of the correspondence is between Nouwen or his assistants and Robert Ellsberg, Editor-in-Chief for Orbis Books. Specific Nouwen publications mentioned in the files include Walk with Jesus: Stations of the Cross (also referred to as I Walk with Jesus), Gracias, A Cry for Mercy: Prayers from the Genesee, With Burning Hearts: A Meditation on the Eucharistic Life, Love in a Fearful Land, and Ukrainian Journal.

Postcards, cards and prints

Sub-series consists of various blank postcards, greeting cards and reprints of artwork, including prints of icons, a collection of prints by Rembrandt van Rijn, and other reprints of mostly religious artwork. It is possible that Nouwen had intended to send these materials with correspondence, as there are several copies of some prints and postcards.

Theology degree records

Sub-series consists of materials related to Nouwen’s time pursuing his doctoral (doctoraal) degree in Theology at Nijmegen University. It appears as though Nouwen received the degree conferred upon completion of the doctoral exams although his thesis was not accepted. Note of December 18, 2013: file 319 unequivocally suggests that Nouwen pursued a degree in psychology (or to be precise in the Social Sciences) in early 1971. See also file 329, box 290 which contains a more elaborate outline of the thesis in question.

Materials mentioning Nouwen

Subseries consists of materials that mention Henri Nouwen. This material includes newspaper and journal articles with mention of Nouwen (including the inclusion of quotes and excerpts by Nouwen), a song, correspondence, and an announcement of the opening of the Henri J.M. Nouwen Archives and Research Collection.

Materials regarding Seward Hiltner

Sub-series consists of articles and materials collected by Nouwen on Seward Hiltner. Materials were likely collected while Nouwen was at Notre Dame University and at Yale Divinity School. The material was likely collected for use in courses that Nouwen was teaching from 1967 to 1975 at Notre Dame, the Joint Pastoral Institute in Amsterdam, Catholic Theological Institute of Utrecht, and Yale. The courses were on the topic of Pastoral Care. The material might also have informed Nouwen's Theology degree, but this needs more research. In a letter in the file titled "Nouwen correspondence regarding Hiltner material" Nouwen writes, "I am presently involved in research concerning Seward Hiltner, and am trying to collect as many of his writings as possible."
Seward Hiltner (1909 - 1984) was an American Presbyterian minister who lived his life and work focused on the interface between psychology and theology. He believed that the two disciplines are vital to each other and that together they were a decisive force in shaping pastoral care and counseling. In addition to many other positions, Hiltner was the theological consultant for the Menninger Clinic as well as executive secretary for the Council of Clinical Training of Theological Students (founded by Boisen in 1930).

Sub-series consists of materials created by Nouwen, possibly in preparation for his doctoral degree in Theology. Sub-series contains two copies of Nouwen's diary from January 5 to February 21, 1966, during which time he visited several universities in the United States. This trip could possibly have been for research into schools for a potential doctoral program in Theology.

Expenses files

Sub-series consists of material regarding Nouwen's expenses. The files were started by Nouwen's staff after his arrival at L'Arche Daybreak in August 1986. Statements, invoices, and receipts (some with notes) were collected according to category and month. Categories included automobile, business meals, donations, food and entertainment, gifts to individuals, income tax payments, miscellaneous, office supplies, office supplies and equipment, personal, photocopies and photographs, postage/courier, promotion, purchase services, telephone, temporary help, and travel.
It is believed that the expenses files were filed with the General Financial Files during their active year. The files were arranged alphabetically by expense category and by month within each category. At the end of the year each category was bundled together and the General Financial File folders were reused. Therefore, the expenses files for 1995 and 1996 can be found in the General Financial Files and this sub-series consists of the expenses files from August 1986 to December 1994. They are arranged chronologically by year, alphabetically by category within each year, and chronologically by month within each category. The exception being 1986 where months August to December were bundled together.
Every month a summary of expenses was sent by Nouwen's office to Nouwen's personal accountant, Joe Sarno. These summaries can be found in the Personal Accountant Files and the General Financial Files. All expenses were also recorded in the Ledgers and can be found in the Ledgers sub-series.

Non-fiction manuscripts

Sub-series consists of typed and handwritten research notes and draft manuscripts and typescripts related to 22 works of nonfiction, including articles she published about her academic research on Wyndham Lewis, and personal interest in art, as well as articles related to her role as an educator and professor of English, and reflections on her life as a writer. They have been arranged chronologically, frequently relying on the publication dates of individual pieces, and the publication dates of works cited by Watson. Many of the typescripts are tentatively attributed to Watson, as they do not contain any attributive annotations or comments by her and do not appear to have been published. Works that have been accurately dated to a particular conference or public reading have been filed under the Public readings and conference material sub-series of the Professional activities series. Works such as introductions, prefaces, endorsements and blurbs written by Watson for other authors and publications have been filed under the Editorial and collaborative materials sub-series of the Professional activities series. There does not appear to be any surviving documentation for four of Watson's published articles: "Swift and Ovid: The Development of Metasatire

Book reviews

  • CA ON00389 F4-9-4
  • Subseries
  • 1972 - 1996, predominant 1981 - 1996
  • Part of Henri Nouwen fonds

Sub-series consists of published articles as well as bookstore advertising, and transcripts of radio reviews regarding Nouwen's books, audio cassettes, and booklets. Also included are book reviews mentioning Nouwen's forewords and a book of which Nouwen was a contributing author. The articles are in various formats including entire publications, clippings, and photocopies as originally saved by Nouwen. This sub-series contains only those articles which Nouwen or his office collected.
In an attempt to re-establish a system similar to that originated by Nouwen, the Archives created one file to represent each reviewed book, etc., combining the various translations for a single book in the single file. On occasion, articles were photocopied by the Archives staff should more than one of Nouwen's books be mentioned; the copies were distributed to the appropriate book review files.

Collected artwork

Sub-series consists of artwork depicting Henri Nouwen and other framed images and sculptures, which may have been displayed in Nouwen's office or living space.

Sub-series includes his case study for the fellowship as well as Nouwen’s day book or diary following his immediate time after the clinic.
