Draft of Anton T. Boisen and the study of theology through living human documents

File consists of a partial draft typescript of an unpublished book by Nouwen entitled, "Anton T. Boisen and the Study of Theology Through "Living Human Documents". Draft includes 'Preface', 'Part 1. The Case of Anton T. Boisen: General Introduction', and 'Chapter One: The Creative Experience'. This text was likely written during Nouwen's last year at the Menninger Clinic (Topeka, KS).

Drafts of Intimacy

File consists of typescripts of three chapters (seven) of Nouwen's first book, "Intimacy". The chapters included are: 'From Magic to Faith' (originally a student lecture by Nouwen) (includes three copies in Dutch, one in English); 'The Priest and His Mental Health' (one copy; English); and 'The Challenge to Love' (two copies; based on lecture notes). File also includes a typescript of an article entitled, "On the Possibility and Desirability of Love", a precursor to the chapter, 'The Challenge to Love'.

Met Open Handen - Inleiding

File consists of a manuscript of introduction of the Dutch edition of With Open Hands. It is titled "Met Open Handen : vingeroefeningen voor het gebed" [With Open Hands: Exercises for Prayer].

File consists of page 1 of Album 14. There are two photographs on the page [P8460, P8461]. Taken on February 3, 1964, Henri, Laurent J.M. and Maria Nouwen are seen sitting and standing during Henri's psychology doctoral exam at the Katholieke Universiteit Nijmegen. Included in the pictures are Professor Han Fortmann, Professor Prick, a crowd of unidentified students and family, including Toon Ramselaar, watching the proceedings. The annotation on the page reads: "Doctoral examen - psychologie. 3 Febr. 1964. Staande: Professor Fortmann. Zittende: Professor Prick."

Henri Nouwen is seen with friends, including Trudi Habes, Dick and Doak van Dalen and Seward and Helen Hiltner at a celebration in his honour in November 1970; and away on retreat with Newman Chaplains in June, 1972 in Dayton, Ohio and Detroit, Michigan.

File consists of seventy-four slides of Martin Luther King Jr.'s civil rights march (attended by Nouwen), which began in Selma, AL, on March 21, 1965, and arrived in Montgomery, AL, on March 25, 1965. File also contains seven slides taken by or featuring Nouwen, including one slide featuring Nouwen in military uniform, one slide of the original Menninger Clinic, one slide taken by Nouwen during a trip, and four slides from a University of Notre Dame football game.

File consists of two typescripts of "Aging". Draft (1) is entitled, "Aging and Ministry", by Nouwen, with Peter J. Naus and Don McNeill, with many thanks to Walter Gaffney (1971 - 1974). Draft (2) is entitled, "Aging", by Nouwen and Walter J. Gaffney (Photography by Ron P. van den Bosch) (1974).

Photographs of Holland

File consists of 47 slides featuring photographs taken in the Netherlands. These photographs were possibly taken in Amsterdam and Rotterdam. Some photographs feature the canal that runs through Amsterdam. There are photographs of buildings in a city as well as in a more country setting, as well of some photographs of windmills. There are also several photographs of paintings, perhaps done by Rembrandt van Rijn (P3964-P3966).

File consists of page 10 of Album 5. There are four photographs on the page [P6638, P6639, P6640, P6641]. In the photos Laurien, Maria and Laurent Nouwen pose for a photo outside and Laurent J.M. Nouwen sits on a horse outside of the [Nouwen home?] while Lillenor Habvard looks on, in September 1948. Also included is a 1948 photo of Ferry [last name unknown] in a field with a view of the church at the minor seminary in Apeldoorn and a May 1947 photo of a crowd, including Harry and Truus Derkx (nee Ramselaar), sending off a boat. The annotations on the page read: "Ferry in Apeldoorn 1948" and "Mai 1947 Truus an Harry naar Curacao".

File consists of letters from Cardinal Bernardus Alfrink, Archbishop of Utrecht. Alfrink was Nouwen's bishop. Also includes two long letters fron Nouwen (in Dutch). Also includes correspondence from Rev. George J. Parnassus of St. Raymond's Catholic Church in Downey, CA.

Visit of Fr. Marcel Curinckx - May 20 - June 14, 1991

File consists of correspondence with Fr. Marcel Curinckx, a Belgian Priest, regarding a visit to L'Arche Daybreak. Includes correspondence between Nouwen and Joe Vorstermans regarding arrangements for Fr. Curinckx's visit. Many of the letters are in Dutch.

Letter from Sr. LaVerne Dolphin, BVM

File consists of a letter from Sr. LaVerne Dolphin, BVM and two typed letters from June E. Hagan, Nouwen's administrative assistant, regarding financial aid to continue her ministry with female inmates.

Muskoka Woods - May 22, 1991

File consists of correspondence with Maurice Charbonneau, regarding a retreat lead by Nouwen and Carl MacMillan at Muskoka Woods Sports Resort, Rosseau, Ontario. The theme of the retreat was " Wounds, Challenges, Life, and Growth." Includes a brochure for the resort, copies of details of conferences/workshops sponsored by the Muskoka Centre that year. Also includes correspondence from MacMillan to Nouwen regarding details of the day's activities.

Anniversary of Don McNeill's Ordination - May 23 - 28, 1991

File consists of correspondence and other material regarding Nouwen's attendance at the Ordination Anniversary celebration for Don McNeill at Sacred Heart Church, Notre Dame, Indiana. Includes a long letter from McNeill speaking of his experiences in Chile. Also includes correspondence and other material regarding Nouwen speaking at Bethany House, Oakland, California. Includes letters from Joe Collins requesting to see Nouwen while he is in California. Includes postcards, programs, and a travel itinerary for the week. Also includes an essay in French entitled Les Deux Premières Étapes du Cheminement Spirituel à L'Arche à la Lumière des Exercices Spirituels de Saint Ignace by Frank Janin.

Letters from Glenn Douglass

File consists of two letters from Glenn Douglass. In letter from September 20, 1982, Douglass thanks Nouwen for his gift of appreciation (a copy of Yushi Nomura's book). File includes a copy of a typed letter from Nouwen from August 13, 1982, from the Abbey of the Genesee, expressing appreciation for Douglass' help during Nouwen's 25th anniversary of ordination celebration (Douglass drove people to and from the airport). Nouwen said he would send Douglass a gift.

Letter from Sr. Ellen Downes

File consists of a card from Sr. Ellen Downes in celebration of the 25th Anniversary of Nouwen's Ordination, gifting Nouwen with thirty masses and two novenas of masses from Fr. Edward of the Salesian Missions of New Rochelle, NY.

1991 Diocesan Clergy Conference, Anglican Church of Canada - June 3 - 5, 1991

File consists of correspondence and other material regarding Nouwen's leadership with Bishop J.C. Fricker at the Diocesan Clergy Conference for the Anglican Church of Canada, at the Trent Conference Center, Peterborough, Ontario. Includes minutes from planning meetings, agenda for the conference, liturgical materials for each of the services, and details about the Trent Conference center. Also includes many letters to Nouwen reflecting on the conference, notes on the conference in Nouwen's hand, an a letter from Nouwen detailing how the conference should be structured. The theme of the conference was "Living the Spiritual Life - A Conference of Priestly Spirituality."

File consists of a letter from Jack Doyle, MSW, coordinator of Training for the Family Counselling of Greater New Haven Inc., requesting a letter of recommendation for Jeanne Sulavik, and a typed letter from Mabel Treadwell, Nouwen's administrative assistant.

File consists of correspondence and other material from Kate Holt, regarding a visit to Daybreak by a group from Theatre and Company. Includes information about the theatre company and reviews of their last two shows. Also includes a thank-you letter from Stuart Scadron-Wattles.

Visit of Fr. Marc Roseeuw and Greet Cassier, Belgium TV - June 14 - 20, 1991

File consists of correspondence and other material from Fr. Marc Roseeuw, regarding a visit to Daybreak, with his cousin Greet Cassier, to finish a film for Belgium TV. They wanted to get some footage of the liturgy and life in the house. The majority of the materials are in Dutch. Includes a memo from Nouwen to Daybreak discussing the event.

File consists of letters from J. Edward Dudgeon, a musician and activist, and a typed letter from Nouwen, donating money for Dudgeon to produce a record.
