Ham 2023 accession

This accrual contains correspondence from family and friends to Jim Ham while he was a student at MIT (1947-1949). There is also a small number of letters from Jim to family members, including three as a child to his mother (1926-1928). One file of memorabilia, photographs and letters relates to his time in the Naval Service at the end of World War II (1944-1945). Finally, there is a certificate from July 1979 that made Ham a lifetime member of the Royal Ontario Museum, shortly before the ROM and the University separated. Ham was President at the time that the two institutions parted ways.

Michael Bliss 2021 accession

Records surrounding the health and subsequent death of University Professor Michael Bliss. Box 1 includes his medical records, diary and notes he kept about his health, and email correspondence from friends who reviewed his medical records after his death, on behalf of the Bliss family.

Box 2 contains items following his death, including speaking notes from his memorial service by John Dirks, James Spence, and Sally Bliss; tributes and obituaries; cards and letters of condolence to his family and wife Elizabeth (Liz) Bliss; and the guest book from the Memorial Service at Massey College. There is also 1 file regarding his nomination to the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame in 2015.

Ham 2019 accession

Family photo album documenting James Ham's childhood into early adulthood including his time working for Ontario Hydro as a student and his time in the Navy during World War II. There is also one family trip diary describing a car trip he took with his wife Mary and their two children to the Northwest Territories in 1971. There are selected slides documenting his trip to the USSR in 1960. There is also a selection of colour slides taken during trips to Asia including an official Uof T trip to China in 1980 as well as a 2nd trip to China and Korea with Mary in 1982. Finally there are photos of the plaque unveiling to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the founding of Ajax Campus, 1994

Safarian 2018 accession

Accession consists of the last remaining records of Prof. A. Edward Safarian. Material predominantly consists of records documenting his professional life as a professor and researcher. These include teaching files from his time at the University of Saskatchewan and the University of Toronto as well as research files and drafts of publications on topics primarily related to multinational enterprises and public policy, mergers and acquisitions, foreign direct investment, free trade, and NAFTA. This accession also contains material reflecting Prof. Safarian’s international outlook, including several personal and business trips to Armenia, a research project on China, and involvement as a board member of the Mosaic Institute. Records include correspondence, annotated articles and notes, reports, lecture notes, research files, drafts of publications and addresses, and photographs.

Ham 2018 accession

Personal family correspondence including letters to James Ham (Jim) from family while a student at MIT; Jim's letters home to his parents from India in 1953; letters from Mary to Jim while Mary was in Finland, 1954 and Jim in Jamaica, 1954. There is also two versions of a trip journal by Jim for his trip to Europe in 1949. Also included is a ticket to Queen Elizabeth's Coronation in 1953.

Macpherson 2018 accession

Accession consists of correspondence, certificates and photographs relating to honours bestowed on Professor C. B. Macpherson, most of which relate to the accompanying C. B. Macpherson Memorial Quilt, designed and made for him in 1989 by Ellen Adams from six of his academic hoods. Also includes two photographs of Macpherson receiving the Order of Canada from Governor General Jules Léger at Rideau Hall in 1977.

Science for Peace 2017 accession

Accession consists of general publicity material for Science for Peace as well as documents related to the creation of the Chair of Peace Studies position at the University of Toronto. Records include newsletters, bulletins, correspondence, memoranda, and proposals.

Bissell 2017 accession

This accession contains slides taken by Claude or Christine Bissell of many colleagues including Marshall McLuhan, Jack Sword, Robin Harris, Don Forster, Donald Ivey, as well as canadian writer Robertson Davies, poet Robert Finch, and artist Barker Fairley. There are many more images of friends and colleague, some identified, some not. Also included are some portraits including a colour transparency of Bissell's Installation photograph, photographs of official events and Bissell's 80th Birthday Party.

Michael Bliss Journals

Handwritten, typed, and word-processed journals, along with digital versions covering Bliss’ life and career from 1967 to 2017. He kept an almost daily journal/diary spanning his career and retirement. The first file contains an introduction to and description of the journals. Also present are some accompanying press clippings, photographs, and handwritten notes.

Macpherson 2013 accession

Accession consists of a letter to 'The Times' re "rights of man" (1939), and a file on the proposed Canadian Bill of Rights (1947), and 11 audio-cassette tapes of lectures delivered by Professor Macpherson to his Political Science 200 course, 'Political Theory', in 1977-1978.

Bissell 2013 accession

Scrapbook documenting the Canadian Art Exhibition at the Tate Gallery in London, 1938. Includes mainly reviews from various newspapers but these are extensive. It was prepared by the Press Office, Canada House.

Ham 2012 accession

Family correspondence relating to trips Prof Ham took including his 1960 trip to Moscow for the 1st International Congress of the International Federation Automatic Control, a trip to the United Kingdom in 1966 and the Balkans in 1971 for a meeting of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers. There is also family correspondence for trips he took together with his wife Mary to Scotland and Banff, Vancouver however most of the family correspondence documents the sabbatical year the family took to Cambridge in 1960 - 1961.

Also included in this accession is one photo taken at the IFAC meeting in Moscow.

Sirluck 2012 accession

Accession consists of personal correspondence, 1961-2009; University of Manitoba Board of Governors meeting minutes, memos, and notes from Professor Sirluck’s position as President of the University of Manitoba; and the Management and Review Analysis Program (MRAP) task force report for the University of Toronto, 1976.

Farquharson 2012 accession

Records belonging to Dr. Ray Farquharson (1897-1965) document professional trips, meetings and awards. Included is correspondence, notes, agenda and memorabilia. Also included in this donation are records relating to Dr. Ray Farquharson collected by colleagues James Dauphinee and Bob Kerr and passed to the Farquharson family. Finally, there are a set of early letters belonging to Dr. Farquharson’s uncle, University of Toronto alumnus, Dr. Edgar Nesbitt Coutts (M.B. 1900). The letters mainly cover his time as part of the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force during the First World War and afterwards in a Swiss sanatorium recovering from tuberculosis. Includes correspondence with Farquharson.

Skilling 2012 accession

The material consists of the personal records of Professor Skilling and focuses primarily of Skilling’s academic work, and includes research notes and drafts of his doctoral thesis, The German-Czech National Conflict in Bohemia, 1779-1873, as well as notes and drafts supporting the revision of this thesis, which Skilling worked on for several years. There is also some correspondence with other scholars in the field of Eastern European studies, as well as publishers and editors.

The accession also contains some of Professor Skilling’s personal belongings and awards, such as medals, honorary degrees, and photographs and slides of his personal and professional life.

Welsh 2012 accession

This accession consists of biographical information, certificates and diplomas, correspondence relating to Dr. Welsh’s employment as Chairman of the Department of Physics, with officials of the Order of Canada, his retirement, the H.L. Welsh Lectureship, and other honors. The collection also includes notes and outlines from four interviews done for the U of T Oral History Programme. The collection includes four photographs, several degrees, awards, certificates, and posters. This collection has been divided into three series based on the form and content of the records; 1) Correspondence and Biographical Material, 2) Degrees, Awards, and Certificates, and 3) Photographs.

Bissell 2011 accession

Records document Claude Bissell’s personal and professional life. Unlike previous accessions, B2011-0018 contains extensive personal correspondence with family members especially while he was posted overseas during the 2nd World War as well as with his wife Christine (Series 4). There are also several series that document Bissell’s personal life rather than his professional life including his creativity through music, drama and poetry (Series 12) and his relationship with his brother Keith (Series 15). Nonetheless, most of the other records in this accession complete series of records found in earlier accessions and include many of his lectures (series 8 and 9), writings (Series 5 and 6) as well as his post-retirement diaries which completes an earlier run in B1988-0091 (Series 11). «

Stacey Family 2010 accession

Further records documenting members of the Stacey family, including Charles Edward Stacey, his wife Pearl (and her estate), his children, Charles Perry (C.P) Stacey and Dorothy (Stacey) Brown and brother-in-law, Harcourt Brown, as well as C. P.

Innis 2010 accession

Accession consists of the academic robe (doctorate) of Harold Adams Innis as well as the cap with tassel. Academic Robe is black with three dark blue velvet bands on the sleeves and velvet facing running down the front of the gown in the style of American academic gowns for doctoral degrees in philosophy. Monogram “H.A.I.” inside back collar. Black cloth academic cap with tassel size 7, with hand written label “Innis, H.A.” on inside.

Prof. Innis received his Doctorate in Philosophy (Ph.D) from the University of Chicago in 1920.

Stacey Family 2009 accession

Further records documenting members of the Stacey family, including Charles Edward Stacey, his wife Pearl, his children, Charles Perry (CP) Stacey and Dorothy Brown, and CP's wives, Doris and Helen. Includes C.P.'s correspondence with his mother and Doris during the Second World War and Dorothy and her husband Harcourt Brown; correspondence regarding Doris' estate; and a file of CP's writings. Also includes a stamp album compiled when C.P. was a student at University of Toronto Schools; information on Charles E. Stacey's resignation from the Masons (1896), the sale of his property after his death (1927) and Pearl's investments. Concludes with correspondence with Helen Stacey and Jennifer S. H. Ham 2008 accession

Correspondence, diary, talk documenting the career of Dr James Ham, past University of Toronto president. Included is a copy of a diary from 1949 kept by Ham while traveling in England and Europe. There are also documents collected by his wife, Mary Ham, relating to her late husband's role in the Canadian Institute of Advanced Research.

This accession documents Prof. Land’s professional activities with the Canadian Library Association, the Ontario Library Association and the Institute of Professional Librarians prior to his appointment as Director of the School of Library Science in 1964. Personal records of Edward Safarian, Professor of Economics at the University of Toronto consisting of personal correspondence, including a file on the Table Ronde d’Économistes France-Canada (7th : 1991 : Paris) and the granting of an honorary degree by the University of Toronto to Arthur E. Child (1994); research files, including interviews, for Safarian’s writings on foreign ownership and multinational enterprise; and files on his professional association with the Canadian-American Committee, including notes on its confidential meetings (1972-1992), and the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (1991-1997), especially its Economic Growth and Policy Program. Woodhouse 2006 accession

Notebooks compiled by A.S.P. Woodhouse, primarily for teaching in English literaure at University College, University of Toronto. The emphasis is on 18th century literature (especially Romanticism) and the History of nineteenth century thought, in the undergraduate pass and honours program (largely the latter). Accompanying them is a selection of heavily annotated books by and about 19th century writers.

This accession contains one small copy print of the Engineering Society Executive from 1898-99; video tape recordings of the Engineering Alumni and Awards Ceremonies for the years 1989, 1993, 1995-1997; one tape of engineering student production, Skule Nite, for the year 1996. There is also 1 film clip (34 secs) promoting the Engineering Open House, dated in the late 1970s.

Welsh 2005 accession

Records relating to the activities of the Class of 1930 (Maths and Physics), assembled by Harry Welsh, sometime class president. Includes notices, minutes of meetings, correspondence and membership lists.

Huntsman 2005 accession

This accession consists of diaries, diplomas, research files (including fish scales), memoranda, minutes, notes, reports, photographs and, especially, correspondence, manuscripts and publications documenting Dr. Huntsman’s career as a marine biologist and an expert on the behaviour of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar). The correspondence is primarily professional, centres on officials at the Biological (later Fisheries Research) Board of Canada, and colleagues (especially Thomas Goudge) at the University of Toronto and elsewhere, including Ralph W. Burhoe of the Institute on Religion in the Age of Science. There are files on numerous conferences, organizations such as the Ontario advisory committees on Lake Erie and Lake Huron fisheries, the Wood’s Hole Oceanographic Institution, the Royal Society of Canada and the Royal Lunch Club at the University of Toronto. Dr. Huntsman’s writings are primarily from his post-retirement years and centre on issues relating to fisheries research, especially the movement of salmon, and critiques of evolution.
