Records relating to gifts

Sub-series consists primarily of correspondence relating to gifts made to Victoria University, predominantly to the library, 1979– 1985, 1992, 2002. Also consists of a presentation regarding The Wood Family's benefactions to Victoria College, 1995.

Series consists of copies of official minutes, appendices and related documents, 1855-2009, and index to minutes. Appendices and related documents include reports from University departments, including the Victoria University Library Annual Report, the Centre for Reformation and Renaissance Studies Annual Report, Enrollment Reports from Emmanuel College and Victoria College Registrars and annual lists of scholarship and award recipients. Also includes reports of Senate Committees, Reports from the President, copies of policies, and relevant correspondence.

Correspondence files of Principal Brown

Correspondents include: College faculty; Victoria and University of Toronto administrative staff; students; parents and ministers of students; alumni; staff of other academic institutions in Canada and the U.S.A.; United Church ministers and denominational officials; church members seeking advice or recommendations; magazine and journal editors; personal friends and family of Brown.

Subjects of the correspondence include: faculty hiring, promotion and salaries; student marks, appeals, discipline, financial support, and recommendations for graduate schools, scholarships, and jobs; searches for academic appointments; fundraising; requests for articles; requests for speaking and preaching; work on United Church boards and committees, especially relating to a report on "Christianizing the Social Order" and church publications. Many documents reflect Brown's personal philosophy of higher education.

Files on teaching staff (general categories)

Sub-series consists of files labelled with a variety of general categories. Some of the older files (1944-1957) are organized alphabetically by the initial letter of staff surnames. The newer files (1957-1969) have their contents organized chronologically by date of item. The remaining staff files (1945-1959) are subtitled "Miscellaneous", "Retired or Resigned", and "Sessional". Many files in the sub-series contain confidential information on hiring, salaries and promotion. Other subjects include teaching assignments, sessional appointments, requests for academic leave, and support for study abroad.

Records of the Task Force on the Charles Street Lands

Sub-series consists of minutes of the Task Force as well as memoranda regarding the development projects, correspondence, statements and briefs, reports re development strategy, and other records. Also includes minutes of the Property Sub-Committee (of the Steering Committee) discussing the development of the lands (prior to the establishment of the Task Force).

Records related to teaching and lectures

Series consists mainly of rough notes for course lectures that Bigwood taught through the U of T Classics Department (including lectures for the High School Classics Day program). Also consists of course materials, including reading lists, copies of exams and assignments, bibliographies, as well as course descriptions and summary course evaluations.

Series also consists of administrative records related to the Department and Victoria College, including Joan Bigwood's work as a Don of Women's Residence.

John Craig Davidson

Consists of the incoming, personal correspondence written to John Craig Davidson, who went by his middle name, Craig. The majority of the letters are from Helen Hudson, his fiancee at the time, who was working as a nurse. Also includes lecture notes regarding the military from 1939 and a blank 1941 Athletic Club dance program with attached pencil.

Sub-series consists of minutes of the first Campaign Committee, the Special Names Committee / Special Subscription Committee and joint meeting minutes of the two. Also consists of records relating to the Campaign Fund (including appeal letters by Margaret Addison. Sub-series also consists of records of the later Campaign Committee which oversaw the "Renewing the Heritage" Campaign which coincided with the Sesquicentennial Celebration in 1986.

General correspondence of Nathanael Burwash

This series consists of a copybook of Burwash's outgoing correspondence arranged chronologically and indexed by surname of correspondent at the beginning of the volume. The letters deal with a variety of financial and academic matters relating to Victoria University, most notably the raising of funds for the new Birge-Carnegie Library.

Records of the Pension Committee

Series consists of records of the Pension Committee and records of the Pension Trustees who were responsible for Victoria University's two pension plans prior to the establishment of the Committee in 1990. Records include minutes, reports, copies of benefit plans and supporting records.
