Anhalt's Oppenheimer: the history of a never-finished major work

File consists of notes, correspondence, and drafts for an article that John Beckwith wrote for Intersections (2013). Beckwith delivered an earlier version of the paper (typescript included) at the Canadian University Music Society (CUMS) conference at the University of Victoria (June 7, 2013). File also includes copies of related correspondence with Istvan Anhalt (1988-1989) and a draft libretto for Anhalt's Oppenheimer opera (1990).

File consists of correspondence regarding John Beckwith's book In Search of Alberto Guerrero (Waterloo, Ont.: Wilfrid Laurier University Press, 2006). Unheard of : memoirs of a Canadian composer

File contains research notes, correspondence, re-writes, editorial comments, press releases, and reviews for John Beckwith’s memoirs Unheard Of: Memoirs of a Canadian Composer (Wilfrid Laurier University Press, 2012). Beckwith’s research notes include a list of important personal and professional events from 1937 to 1990, various copied correspondence, and some original correspondence from Nadia Boulanger and Beckwith’s father. File also includes correspondence from Ben Conway and William Toye and Beckwith's contract with Wilfrid Laurier University Press for the publication of the book.

A portion of Beckwith's source materials and research notes were originally stored in a vertical file folder, arranged alphabetically by subject matter. This arrangement is replicated in the folder storage of these records. Beckwith's source material included the following divisions and contents:

  1. Beckwith [family] : a copy of Beckwith Notes: Number Six (Albert C. and Edward S. Beckwith, 1907) and other genealogical records and notes on the Beckwith family, including family photographs, correspondence, newspapers clippings, marriage certificate for John L. Beckwith and Agnes F. McLeod.

File consists of correspondence relating to John Beckwith book Music at Toronto: A Personal Account (1995) and the preceding talks that Beckwith gave at the University of Toronto Faculty of Music in celebration of its 75th anniversary (1993). Composing in the nineties

File consists of manuscript and typescript drafts of a paper titled "Composing in the Nineties." Beckwith delivered the paper as a public talk at Bishop's University, Lennoxville, Quebec (January 22, 1998), and at the University of South Carolina, Columbia (March 19, 1998). It was an expansion of a presentation to the Canadian University Music Society (CUMS, June 4, 1997) at Memorial University of Newfoundland, St. John's, under the title "Accessibility, Elitism, Oblivion: Options for the Composer." The file includes all three versions of the paper, some earlier drafts, and correspondence with Ulla Colgrass and Tom Gordon (Bishop's University).

Hyphenating Bach

Colonial Harmonist : a manuscript tunebook in the Faculty of Music Library

File consists of John Beckwith's research notes and related correspondence on the Colonial Harmonist by Mark Burnham (1832, rev. 1836), which is held in the University of Toronto Music Library. Beckwith's article was published in The Halcyon (newsletter of the Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library) and a revised version, entitled "Mark Burnham and Upper Canada's First Tunebook, Colonial Harmonist," appeared in the University of Toronto Quarterly, vol. 71, no. 2 (2002).

File consists of a copy of an unpublished column that John Beckwith wrote regarding the new Jean A. Chalmers Chair in Canadian Music and the Institute for Canadian Music at the University of Toronto Faculty of Music.

Toronto's four musical Clarkes

File consists of John Beckwith's talk on J.P. Clarke, Hugh A. Clarke, William Horatio Clarke, and Herbert L. Clarke, entitled "Toronto's Four Musical Clarkes". Beckwith originally gave the talk as part of a University College Symposium on January 20, 1984, and delivered a revised version as part of the Toronto Historical Board series on "Toronto's Musical Past" on February 9, 1995.
