Windborne Productions

File consists of documentation regarding the planning, funding, production and distribution of the documentary Straight to the Heart: the Life of Henri Nouwen, later re-edited and re-voiced as Journey of the Heart: the Life of Henri Nouwen for broader distribution on PBS, by Karen Pascal of Windborne Productions. Included in the file is correspondence between Pascal, Sue Mosteller, Nathan Ball, Maureen Wright and Laurent Nouwen regarding the project and financial support; legal and financial documents including a distribution declaration, funding agreements, tax forms, licensing paperwork, production budgets, usage permissions and broadcast releases signed by interviewed members of L’Arche Daybreak; planning, editing, design and project updates; administrative invoices associated with the distribution of the film(s); and promotional information about the documentaries, Windborne Productions and Pascal. Included in the file are book sales lists and reports; budget sheets pertaining to staff funding at the Nouwen Archives; correspondence between the HNLC, Michael J. Christensen and Rebecca Laird regarding a proposed writing project about Nouwen and spiritual direction; taxation and legal service invoices; meeting notes, budgets, blueprint copies, estimates, invoices and account reports regarding the Dayspring addition; correspondence between Nathan Ball and legal counsel Dorothy Brophy regarding the termination of the Nouwen Estate and the creation of the Henri Nouwen Literary Trust; and various documents, predominantly fund transfers, requiring Browning Watt’s signature. Photographs used by Beth Porter in her anthology Befriending Life: Encounters with Henri Nouwen. In the photographs Nouwen appears alone and with others including Yushi Nomura; Jack Stroh; Cameron and Dylan Humphreys; Thelus George; and Sue Mosteller. February 1977 - Vol. 5

2) Photographs used to promote Bread for the Journey
Photographs and negatives used by the Henri Nouwen Literary Centre to promote Bread for the Journey on the Nouwen Society website. Henri Nouwen and various people, including Sue Mosteller, Mary Carney, Yushi Nomura, Bill Van Buren other members of L’Arche Daybreak appear in the photos.

3) Photographs lent to Michael Ford for use in Wounded Prophet
File consists of photographs lent to Michael Ford for use in Wounded Prophet. The majority of the photos were taken during Henri Nouwen’s 1993 trip to the Ukraine. Nouwen is seen leading a retreat; meeting with Ukrainian community members; signing books; and visiting various unidentified locations. Travel companions Nathan Ball and Borys Gudziak appear in several of the photos. Also included is a photo of Nouwen, wearing a tan sweater over a white shirt, talking to someone off camera and gesturing with his right hand.

Thaddeus Trenn material

File consists of correspondence between Thaddeus J. Trenn (1937-2013) and Maureen Wright regarding the donation of an article he wrote for the Journal of the American Scientific Affiliation titled “Science and the Mystery of the Human Person” (September 2006), in which Nouwen and Thomas Merton are referenced, and his 1990 book of poetry titled Like Lilies of the Field (copies of both included). Included is earlier, original correspondence between Trenn and Nouwen regarding Trenn’s poetry; his financial support of the Dayspring ministry; and Nouwen’s book In the Name of Jesus.

Rodleighs - Circus Barum

File consists of material regarding The Flying Rodleighs and trapeze artists. Included in the file is a The Globe and Mail of Shane Peacock’s article “The Great Farini walks again” (2000) by Shane Peacock; an email update from the Rodleighs regarding a trip to Australia; an undated photo of The Flying Rodleighs performing; and photocopies of Nouwen’s “Find the Trapeze Artist in the Priest” (Parts 1 and 2) from the New Oxford Review.

Permission information

File consists of photocopies of various articles published in magazines and journals by Henri Nouwen, some accompanied by handwritten notes indicating the text has appeared in other publications. Also included in the file is a letter from Jan Attridge to Kathryn Smith regarding the Henri Nouwen Legacy Trust’s right to grant permission for reprints of articles by Nouwen that appeared in America; and a letter from Barbara Brutt of Ave Maria Press that accompanied a Portuguese edition of With Open Hands. Copies of articles in the file include: “Power, Powerlessness and Power”; “Intimacy, Fecundity and Ecstasy”; “All is Grace”; “The Peace That is Not of This World”; “Compassion: Solidarity, Consolation and Comfort”; “Moving from Solitude to Community to Ministry”; and “Adam’s Peace”.

Oral history

File consists of reporting and budgeting information regarding the Henri Nouwen Oral History Project. Included is an email and a report, titled “Final Report: The Oral History of Henri Nouwen (Phase One)”, submitted to James [E.] Lewis of the Louisville Institute by Joe Vostermans on behalf of Sue Mosteller; financial statements and budgeting forecasts with Maureen Wright’s notes for Phase I and Phase II of the project; and an itinerary for an interviewer training workshop help March 25 to March 28, 2004 in Toronto.

Also in the file is a photocopy of the Release and Waiver of Rights form signed by Henri Nouwen prior to his appearance on Hour of Power.

Advent / Lenten manuscripts

File consists of draft manuscripts of Advent and Lenten anthologies containing excerpts from Nouwen’s published works. Compiled by Kathryn Smith the titles include: Repent and Live; Jesus: Beloved Son; Finding Our Sacred Centre: A Journey to Lourdes; From Fear to Love: Lenten Reflections on the Parable of the Prodigal Son; and Journey of the Heart: Lenten Prayer with Henri J.M. Nouwen. Also included in the file is a printed email from Smith outlining the intended use of the material and a computer printed photo of Henri Nouwen.

Henri Nouwen Society inception materials

File consists of files kept by Tannis Arnett related to the incorporation and administrative operations of the Henri Nouwen Society from 1998 to 1999. The files include correspondence, minutes and agendas for meetings held by Wendy Greer and the Henri Nouwen Society Board; administrative correspondence between Arnett and Greer; planning and reference documents regarding the September 18-20, 1998 “Hearts Speak to Heart” retreat; and correspondence about the design of a Henri Nouwen Society brochure. Also in the file are two documents unrelated to the brochure: a June 15, 1999 letter from Joyce Doyle, on behalf of Tannis Arnett, regarding a reservation deposit for an event taking place September 24-26, 1999 and a copy of an undated, uncredited article titled “Community in van Gogh’s The Potato Eaters”.

    Correspondence regarding HNS Board activities. Included are letters from Tannis Arnett likely forwarded to HNS Board members by fax; contact information for the HNS Board members; copies of the minutes from the September 20-21, 1998 HNS Board meeting; the mission state of the Henri Nouwen Society; an early version of the Henri Nouwen Society brochure; copies of emails from Wendy Greer with updates regarding HNS happenings; and correspondence from Don McNeill.

Included in the file is correspondence from legal contacts at McCanliss & Early to Jay and Wendy Greer; drafts and final copies of the Certificate of Incorporation and By-laws of the Henri Nouwen Society; Henri Nouwen Society missions statements and budgets; drafts and final copies of HNS Board meeting minutes with comments from Tannis Arnett, Wendy Wilson Greer, Kathy Christie and Sue Mosteller; contact information for the HNS Board members; and a notice regarding tax exemption status of the Henri Nouwen Society from the Internal Revenue Service. Letterhead and archival questionnaire cards

File consists of blank letterhead for the Henri Nouwen Literary Centre and the Henri Nouwen Literary Centre’s newsletter Sprouting Seeds. Also in the file are several blank questionnaire postcards for individuals to indicate whether they had Nouwen related material they were willing to donate to the Henri Nouwen Literary Centre.

Included is correspondence about security updates to email accounts; printouts from the website; a poem “Go to the Place of Sorrow” by Steve Moore; copies of material to be added to the website; a Henri Nouwen Society brochure; the January 2000 edition of News from the Henri Nouwen Society; and a copy of the Winter 2000 edition of The Religion Division Quarterly: The Newsletter of the AAMR Religion Division that mentions a Nouwen related lecture.

Website - Nouwen

File consists of correspondence, tasks lists and reference material regarding the setup of a website by the Henri Nouwen Literary Centre to support the work of promoting Nouwen’s legacy. Included in the file is correspondence regarding the use of content and photographs on the website; correspondence regarding the registration of hnlc.org and decisions about the site’s content; a printout of the Henri Nouwen Literary Centre Home Page from January 1998; printouts of web pages referring to Nouwen or Nouwen-related events; Whirlwind Communication guidelines about success on the internet; a confirmation for the registration of nouwen.net; requests for and examples of website content; and copies of an article from the Catholic Register by Sharon MacDonald titled “Internet as a source of positive strength” that mentions the Nouwen and the website. Also in the file are administrative records and invoices kept by Kathy Christie while setting up an email account and internet for use by Nouwen; and a copy of an undated newsletter from the Henri Nouwen Literary Centre; a copy of the goals and objectives of the Henri Nouwen Society.

Webb, Randy

File consists of personal correspondence from Randall Webb, pastor of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, to Henri Nouwen regarding his book The Living Reminder: Service and Prayer in Memory and the possibility of Nouwen leading the Illinois Synod Pastors and Professional Leaders Conference in August 1980. Included in the file is a copy of a letter written by Webb to his bishop Dr. Paul E. Erickson regarding the Nouwen’s willingness to lead the conference and a copy of a letter to Webb from Alan R. Carlson regarding a leave of absence.

File consists of correspondence to and from various individuals whose last name or organization begins with W. Vision meeting - Nouwen Literary Centre

File consists of documents regarding the Vision Meeting for the Henri Nouwen Literary Centre on held on January 22, 2001 at the King View Conference Centre. Included is an invoice from King View for the space rental; a template for a letter sent to attendees ahead of the meeting; a diskette labeled “Vision Meeting – Jan. 22/01 – Mission Statement”; meeting notes; and a handout detailing Henri Nouwen Literary Centre projects, activities and initiatives.

David Rothrock, Jean-Christophe Pascale and Jean Vanier”; copies of letters from Gail Stevenson to Jean Vanier regarding her daughter; a copy of “Jean Vanier’s Eulogy at Henri Nouwen’s Funeral”; contact information for Vanier’s assistant Barbara Swanekamp; and an email from Asmund Bjornstad to Sue Mosteller regarding the nomination of Vanier for the Nobel Peace Prize accompanied by proposal and Vanier’s curriculum vitae.

Second file folder consists of reference material regarding Jean Vanier’s participation as the leader of the Vigil at the Lambeth Conference in Canterbury. Included is promotional material and articles about the event; copies of the transcripts from Vanier’s first and second vigils; and a copy of an August 1998 letter written by Vanier to the L’Arche International community in which he mentions the Lambeth Conference.

V year 2000

File consists of a personal email Susan Van Den Broeke to Sue Mosteller regarding Henri Nouwen’s In the Name of Jesus. Included is a copy of Mosteller’s response.

Trip to Genesee Abbey

File consists of notes, correspondence and reference material regarding Tannis Arnett’s trip to the Abbey of the Genesee in April 1998. Included in the file a letter from Brother Christian to Arnett; brochures and postcards from the Abbey; Arnett’s notes about her visit and from talking to various contacts; travel arrangement documents; To Do lists; a document titled “Present State and Location of the Merton Correspondence”; and a photocopy of Nouwen’s “Stranger in Paradise” published in The Sign: National Catholic Magazine in April 1976.

Trinity church (grants program), (video project) James Callaway

File consists of promotional brochures and booklets about the Trinity Television Video Collection and the Trinity Grants Program. Included in the file is a letter to Rev. James Callaway Jr. from Sue Mosteller requesting a grant to fund the collection and cataloguing of Henri Nouwen’s archival material. The letter is accompanied by an expense budget for the project, a budget for the Henri Nouwen Centre and a list of the 1997-1998 L’Arche Daybreak Board of Directors. Also in the file is a copy of a Final Report submitted to the Trinity Grants Board by the Centre for Social and Religious Research titled “Spirituality Vital Episcopal Congregations”; a letter to Mosteller from Trinity Television producers regarding the possibility of producing a program on the life and spirituality of Nouwen; and copies of Missionary Messenger.

Think tank - New York

File consists of correspondence regarding the organization of a think tank hosted by Sue Mosteller in New York City at Jay and Wendy Greer’s home on November 4, 2000 to discuss her proposal for a book about Nouwen’s life and spirituality. Included are draft invitation letters; lists of attendees; correspondence about availability and travel arrangements; an agenda for the meeting; and a Book Visioning document outlining Mosteller’s ideas for the book.

Thank you notes for befriending life
