L'Arche Trosly-Breuil fonds

Henri J.M. Nouwen was a close friend of Jean Vanier and was invited to join the L'Arche Trosly-Breuil and was an active member of their community from August 1985 to May 1986. His experiences at Trosly-Breuil are published in his work, "The Road to Daybreak". The fonds consists of eleven audio cassettes of lectures and retreats given by Nouwen. The fonds also contains one compact disc of photographs of various subjects, including Nouwen. The records range in date from 1985 to 2008.
The Fonds has been organized into two series:

L'Arche Trosly-Breuil (Association)

Sound Recordings series

Series consists of eleven audio cassettes of lectures and retreats given by Nouwen from 1985 to 1994. Specifically, there are two audio cassettes from a ALT Brugge Retreat on the topics of Prayer and Reconciliation. There are two audio cassettes which contain a Mass given by Nouwen on Compassion. There is one audio cassette titled "La Visitation" and another titled "Francais – Homelie – Houietie". There are also five audio cassettes of Nouwen leading a seminar on the Gospel of St. John while he was at L'Arche Trosly-Breuil.

Item consists of one audio cassette featuring a homily by Nouwen on October 27, 1985, likely at L'Arche Trosly-Breuil. The title of the homily was "Healing Bartimaeus" or "Guerison d'un Aveugle Bartimaeus". Nouwen focuses on the Gospel of Mark 10: 46-52, in which Bartimaeus was healed.

Item consists of five audio cassettes of seminars on the topic of the Gospel of St. John given by Nouwen during his stay at L'Arche Trosly-Breuil in 1985-1986 at the request of Jean Vanier. Nouwen refers to this course in his work, "Road to Daybreak." SR2010 13 03 v1: "St. Jean I: Prologue- The glory of god", December 19, 1985; SR2010 13 03 v2: "Gospel of John: Spirituality and peacemaking"; the recording includes a discussion on the individual experience and proclamation of God. Though the cassette lists the date April 11, 1983 it is believed that the initial recording was taped over by the Gospel of John seminar sometime during 1986 when this seminar series was given. SR2010 13 03 v3: "St. Jean III: The movement of XT= downward prologue", January 1, 1986; SR2010 13 03 v4: "St. Jean IV", February 23, 1986; SR2010 13 03 v5 "St. Jean V- Sharing- Nocodeme", dated April 3, 1986. The content focuses on Bible passages in which Nicodemus is featured.

Recording of Nouwen on prayer and reconciliation

Item consists of two audio cassettes of a recording of a talk given at a retreat for Long Term Assistants of the Northern European Zone in Bruges, Belgium (Retreat ALT Brugge), which took place in Bruges, Belgium in June 1994. The item consists of two cassettes SR2010 13 05 v1 and SR2010 13 05 v2. Volume 1 has Prayer on side A and Reconciliation on side B. Volume 2 has Reconciliation on side A and Prayer on side B.

Photographs series

Series consists of one audio compact disc dated April 19, 2008. The CD contains photos taken of L'Arche, including photos of Jean Vanier, Henri Nouwen, Barbara Swanecamp, L'Arche Trosly Breuil, Père Thomas, Pope John Paul II, core members, and assistants. CD was created for the memorial service of Barbara Swanecamp.

G.K. Chesterton Archival Collection

The collection consists of manuscripts of many published works, illustrations from Chesterton's time at the Slade School of Art and later, correspondence with family and friends, and albums of press clippings. There are also microfiche copies of the papers of Chesterton's wife Frances (1875-1938), including her plays and poems. Additionally, the collection contains material added by Dorothy Collins after Chesterton's death.
In addition to the Chesterton papers on microfiche the G.K. Chesterton Archival Collection contains 10 original illustrations as well as one of Chesterton's sketchbooks. Most of the sketches date from his period at the Slade School of Art, but there are several from earlier.
The Papers of Monsignor John O'Connor (1870-1952) are also a part of the G.K. Chesterton Archival Collection. Monsignor O'Connor was the Catholic priest who became the model for Chesterton's character "Father Brown". In February 1903 O'Connor wrote to Chesterton, and the following year they formed an immediate bond of friendship which was to last more than thirty years. In 1921 O'Connor was present at Chesterton's reception into the Catholic Church. The papers of Monsignor O'Connor include a number of manuscripts of his poems and essays, Christmas greetings from the Chesterton's, personal letters, and newspaper clippings by and about Chesterton.

Collection consists of hand-written and typed manuscripts, correspondence, poems, translations and radio transcripts created by Monsignor John O'Connor. The records were purchases and accumulated by Father Kevin Scannell as part of his G.K. Chesterton research.

Papers of Father John O'Connor

Series consists of a collection of hand-written and typed manuscripts, poems, translations and radio transcripts created and accumulated by Monsignor John O'Connor, as well as his correspondence, collected ephemera (including news clippings, Christmas cards, posters, pamphlets, and small press publications) and research notes. The majority of the material relates to O'Connor's friendship with the author G.K. Chesterton, although O'Connor also translated Latin religious poetry and composed his own verse and wrote prose pieces on literature, Church history, morality, religion and philosophy.

L'Arche Audiovisual Collection

Collection consists of audiovisual materials featuring recordings of events given by and used by members of l'Arche International/Internationale. This material includes 1708 audio cassettes, 37 videocassettes, 8 film reels, and 78 audio reels. Much of the material features recordings created at L'Arche retreats internationally, such as the Covenant Retreat, Renewal Retreat, and Faith and Light Retreat. Prominent speakers include Jean Vanier, Henri Nouwen, Joe Egan, Robert Larouche and Sue Mosteller.

The majority of the audio files feature Jean Vanier, usually speaking at retreats. The film reels are recordings made and collected by L'Arche Daybreak, and feature a CBC film on Daybreak (from 1970), pilgramages and trips made by Faith and Light and Daybreak. There is also a film reel of Jean Vanier.

Collection has been arranged into eight series:

Collection also includes a binder which functioned as a catalogue for many of the cassettes that were housed at l'Arche Daybreak until 2004 and 2006. This binder is located in series 7.

L'Arche Daybreak (Association)

Head of House and Regional Meetings

Series consists of 68 audio cassettes made during the course of Head of House meetings or Regional meetings of L'Arche International. The Head of House provides support for the Community Leader by taking direct responsibility for the home. The Leader administrates the overall community, but the Heads of Houses take on the responsibilities of the home for the Leader. The Community Leader regularly meets with Heads of Houses to hear details, issues, listen to questions, to make community announcements, and create a supportive community around any situations that may need support.

Regional meeting 1981

File consists of 16 audio cassettes of the Central Regional Meeting from May 24-26, 1981, given by Fr. Bill Clarke and Dr. Larry Gillick. The cassettes numbered v7-v10 are part of a separate group, but are the same talks of v1-v6.

Head of House Meeting 1982

File consists of 34 audio cassettes featuring recordings of talks given at a North America Head of House meeting held from November 8-14, 1982, in Châteauguay, Quebec. The first 12 cassettes are translations of the talks in English (with duplicate copies), while the last 12 are the talks as given in French.
