Jean Vanier, "Sexuality - Affectivity" #2

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a l'Arche Renewal retreat in Spokane, WA, in 1983.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: For someone to make the passage from death to life, its warfare! Some people are so wounded and so convinced that they are no good, the person next to him has to be convinced that he is ok. There is a struggle between his despair and our hope. We have gone through this in all our homes.

Jean Vanier, "Interlude" #2

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a l'Arche Renewal retreat in Spokane, WA, in 1983.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: I want to talk about a few of the other subjects that came up at the Interlude. He had an atomic scientist who talked about the Big Bang, which produced millions of galaxies and stars. This is a mystery.

Jean Vanier, "Intermediary" #2

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a l'Arche Renewal retreat in Spokane, WA, in 1983.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: If we push people to violence, there is a guilt afterwards. So if we can find other ways, more natural ways of dealing with tensions, it would be better. This demands we be creative in this domain, like play therapy and role play, etc.

Jean Vanier, "Separation and Communion (B)" - Wednesday, July 13, 1988, A.M.

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at l'Arche Renewal retreat events from June 22 - August 23, 1988.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: I would like to come back to we really don't know what communion is. But we have glimpses of it; we have a hope. We have much more an experience of collaboration and even more experience of separation. We you say to me prove communion is true, I can't. I have an intuition, a hope it is true. It's a hope of many people that it is possible. We are expressing a hope and a call that maybe communion is possible.

Jean Vanier, "Shepherds, Servants of Communion" (part 1) - Thursday, July 14, 1988, A.M.

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at l'Arche Renewal retreat events from June 22 - August 23, 1988.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: I just read a book by Br. Roger of Taize. One thing I loved was it said they changed the name of "Prior" of the community to the "Servant of Communion". It's a lovely name and we have to be really convinced that a leader of our communities is also the servant of communion. I want to talk about shepherding as being servants of communion. This is complex for us because very quickly we can become just administrators and not servants of communion. Thus we can be caught up mostly in organizing and doing rather than facilitating communion.

Jean Vanier, "Shepherds, Servants of Communion" (part 2) - Thursday, July 14, 1988, A.M.

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at l'Arche Renewal retreat events from June 22 - August 23, 1988.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: We began this week on the theme of the poor as source of life. The poor who are crying out their pain and need. Are they just a pain in the neck and we have to get rid of them? This is the basic vision of a society based on a pyramid. They challenge us too much and our whole system of values. So we have been talking about the cry for communion of the poor, who call out our capacity for compassion. We will now keep on with how we are called to foster communion. If you are a shepherd, you must know what particular aspect of shepherding you are called to live.

Jean Vanier, #10

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a Covenant Retreat in June 1989.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: I mentioned a number of times how when we feel rejected, we fall into loneliness and anguish. And how quickly anguish and loneliness are transformed into guilt. Guilt is the greatest of all pains, to feel ashamed. The big question is the liberation of guilt.

Jean Vanier, #2

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a Covenant Retreat from October 10-16, 1990. The retreat took place in North Bay, ON.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: In the poem of St John of the Cross, The Flame of Love, he writes tear the veil which prevents our sweet encounter. I want to share about this veil or wall or barrier that prevents us meeting people, that prevents the encounter with God and which somewhere prevents meeting ourselves.

Jean Vanier, #4

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a Covenant Retreat from October 10-16, 1990. The retreat took place in North Bay, ON.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: Yesterday I was sharing about that text of St. John of the Cross. There is a veil between us and Jesus, which means we have difficulty knowing Jesus. We can then quickly invent our own Jesus. We then can not see the scandalous, vulnerable Jesus. Our God is so surprising, inviting us, but does not impose. Today I want to share more about the veil which hides ourselves from ourselves.

Jean Vanier, #5

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a Covenant Retreat from October 10-16, 1990. The retreat took place in North Bay, ON.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: Our vocation is to look at people who are broken and to look at them with love, as Jesus did. I had a humbling experience when visiting a special home for people with severe disabilities. The nurse said to me, Dont you find them beautiful? Sometimes we need help to see the beauty of people. I find the weakness if assistants in LArche is discouragement. LArche is based on relationship and we are all weak in relationship

Jean Vanier, #10

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a Covenant Retreat from October 10-16, 1990. The retreat took place in North Bay, ON.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: I want to say something about the passage from brokenness to unity. One of the images I like to look at is Mary holding the dead body of Jesus, like the Pieta, in her arms. II find that very moving. Holding that dead, broken body with amazing love and delicacy. Yet everything is broken. There is a pervading brokenness, nothing is together. We can find this kind of situation in our world.
