Collected materials

Series consists of press cuttings, booklets, pamphlets, census reports, and correspondence, which Patrick O'Neill collected during his political career, relating to affairs in the town of Warrenpoint and his wider constituency of County Down as well as national issues including the Anglo-Irish dispute and the partition of Ireland. Series includes materials created predominantly during the period from 1920 to 1936, with some correspondence from 1875 to 1920.

Press cuttings

File consists of press cuttings, including news articles, letters to the editor, and political cartoons. File also includes a pamphlet about partition by the Ancient Order of the Hibernians, a poster regarding an Electricity Special Order by the Warrenpoint Gas Consumers' and Waterworks Company, and a draft and copy of a letter to the editor [publication unknown] by Patrick O'Neill.

File consists of a booklet entitled 'Spotlights on the Anglo-Irish Financial Quarrel and the Diffuse White Paper on the Annuities: Focussing the Issues, a sequel to The Strange Case of the Irish Land Purchase Annuities' by Henry Harrison, O.B.E., M.C.

Bill for Redistribution of Seats and Proportional Representation

File consists of two documents produced by the Proportional Representation Society: 'Report for the Year May, 1927 - April, 1928: The Next Step after Equal Franchise,' and the May 1920 issue (volume 10, number 36) of the Journal of the Proportional Representation Society. File also includes a copy of a bill to amend the law with respect to the House of Commons method of voting and the redistribution of seats, and a document entitled 'Points on Registration Work: Imperial Parliamentary Franchise (Man or Woman).'

Collected correspondence on Warrenpoint issues

File consists of correspondence and official documents relating to Warrenpoint Water Supply; Newry, Warrenpoint, & Rostrevor Railway Company; Warrenpoint town clerks' salary; Liberty Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company; and flooding in Warrenpoint.

Thesis

Series consists of a draft of Teresa V. O'Neill's thesis and correspondence related to the thesis.

Diary from Edmonton

File consists of a bound journal kept by Wilfred Watson after 1958. The journal contains an illustration on the cover, presumably by Watson, and is titled "True & Free = Man". The journal contains 110 pages of hand written reading notes, reflections on academia, sexuality, Canadian literature, Wyndham Lewis and other writers.

Manuscripts of twenty two poems

File consists of 22 typed poems, including "Sermon on bears"; "The Hyacinth" (dated Paris, 1956), "The Canticle for the birds"; and a 19 page anthology of poetry (dated Point Grey, 1951), including the poems "Anchises and the Goddess of Love", "A Dialogue", "Simon Barjona" (2 copies), "Et Incarnatus Est", "Erischithon", "Verse-Letter to E.J.", "At the Corner of Bloor and Yonge", "Sad Bulletins", "This Was My Day" (2 copies) , "Totem Park, Point Grey" (2 copies), "A Riddle for Gillian Espinasse : 'Saga hwaet ic hatte'", "And Should She Ask", "Like One of Us", "On An Ash Wednesday Hill", "Lines Composed at Calgary Airport", and an untitled poem beginning "She is more fair than fair can say".

Letter and photograph from Pauline Boote

File consists of a handwritten letter from Pauline Boote, sent March 9, 1998. A photograph of red socks in foreground and a snowy landscape in background is adhered to the letter.

Letter from Roland Ryden-Smith

File consists of a letter, dated November 25, 1953, from Roland Ryden-Smith, editor of the periodical "Experiment", regarding Watson's submitted poem "Valediction".

Letters from Marshall McLuhan

File consists of four letters from Marshall McLuhan, from 1964 to 1968. Correspondence includes an undated handwritten letter with an attached offprint translation of James Joyce's article, "Daniel Defoe", published in "Buffalo Studies" v1. no.1 (December 1964); an 11 page typescript by McLuhan and annotated by Watson titled "Noah's Archetypes"; a letter of introduction from McLuhan to the University of Toronto Library; and a handwritten letter from Marshall McLuhan dated August 31.

File consists of a handwritten note from Keith Swift regarding a review he produced regarding Mordecai Richler's novel "St. Urbain's Horseman".

Rhyme in Modern Poetry

File consists of David Clandfield's University of Alberta, Department of English, Master of Arts thesis "Rhyme in Modern Poetry", dated September 5, 1959.

Ephemera, loose notes and other material

File consists of ephemera, loose notes, poetry fragments, word play, jottings and scraps of citations made by Wilfred Watson on scraps of paper, cigarette packages and used envelopes.

Audio-Visual Records

Series consists of audio-visual material collected by Wilfred Watson and includes three 1.5 mm audiotape reels, and are presumably sound recordings of Watson's theatrical productions or his public readings.

Fonds consists of correspondence, manuscripts, sound recordings, drawings and diaries created and accumulated by the poet and playwright Wilfred Watson, husband to Sheila Watson. Material has been arranged to align with the Wilfred Watson fonds held by the University of Alberta Archives.

Watson, Wilfred

Correspondence

Series consists of Laurent and Colette Potvins’ correspondence with members and representatives of the Roman Catholic Church and Papal Commission on Birth Control before and durring the Commission's meeting in the summer of 1966. Correspondence includes letters from Church representatives nominating and appointing the Potvins to the Commission; letters regarding background information about the Commission, its structure, composition and sub-sessions; and the drafting and production of reports for the Commission.

Sypto-Thematic Rhythm

File consists of a preliminary draft of the unpublished report “Sypto-Thematic Rhythm: A clinical approach to the theoretical efficiency of Rhythm Birth Control” created February 1965. The report was created by Dr. Claude A. Lancot and sent to the Potvins via post by Lancot.

Problems of Marriage

File consists of the unpublished report “Problems of Marriage” by Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Daly. The report was sent from Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Daly and addressed to Dr. and Madame Potvin. The report is dated February 15, 1965. A note, written on Canadian Catholic Conference: Information Services letterhead, is attached to the report.

Survey of Contraceptive Methods

File consists of two preliminary unpublished drafts of “Survey of Contraceptive Methods: Report to the Papal Commission on Population and Birth Control” by Andre E. Hellegers, M.D. Dr. Hellegers was part of the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics, The John Hopkins University School of Medicine and Hospital and the Cardinal Gibbons Center for the Study of Human Reproduction, Baltimore, Maryland. It is unknown if the report was accumulated for their own personal research, in preparation for the Papal Commission, or sent to all members of the Commission.

Journals and pamphlets

File consists of journals and pamphlets accumulated by the Potvin’s, relating to the topic of population and birth control. Journals include the publication “Perspectives” and an edition from “The Journal of the American Medical Association”. A pamphlet titled “Not a way out, but a way forward” by John Julian and Mary Perkins Ryan is also included.

Session reports and presentations

Series consists of documents and reports presented to the members of the Papal Commission during the 1966 meeting of the commission. The 1966 meeting was divided into eight sessions:

2.) B – Session Theologique – Medicale (May 2-6, 1966),
3.) C – Session Demographique I (May 4 -7, 1966)
4.) D - Session Pastorale (+rhythme) (May 9-14, 1966)

Also included are documents and reports created and presented by the members of the Papal Commission.
